Only the "Tolerant" need Apply
I love this ad at Craig's List (Hat Tip: The Only Republican in San Francisco Blog). Apparently, the person placing the ad is an open, tolerant San Franciscan who loves yoga, theatre etc. who is looking for another tolerant roommate to share a space. The requirements for the roommate look anything but tolerant: "No men, no meat, no Republicans, no TV, no smokers, no pets, no plants." Sounds like a winner-I wonder what other rules this tolerant individual will have for whatever sucker--I mean roommate--decides to rent this den of democracy?

"... Tolerant."
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Hilarious!
Two possibilities for the "real" meaning of tolerant in this case: 1)be like me; 2)Gay (Since no men, unless the ad was placed by a man but I doubt it.)
no meat, ok, vegetarian, no plants, arent they vegetables.. ?? so your not supposed to eat..
The person looking for a roommate in the a does not claim to be a tolerant person. What he/she is looking for in a roommate is someone who will be tolerant of an intolerant person.
"There is no smoking here. Any roommate who fires one up spends a night in the box. There is no TV. Any roommate who sneaks in a TV to watch it spends a night in the box. There are to be no Republicans here. Anyone who votes Republican or says anything that even sounds like a Republican spends a night in the box."
Gottafang,
I can see Carl the Floor Walker living in San Francisco.
"It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again. Yes, it will, Precious, won't it? It will get the hose!"

It is still 1984, where tolerant means bigoted and conservatives spend like drunken sailors on shore leave. I hope 1985 is better.

Ok, so you have to be a female vegatarian who doesn't smoke or watch TV and does not have a pet, and votes democrat and doesn't like plants.
That's not a roomate, that's a robot.
This reminds me of a conversation I heard in passing about 10 years ago. Two women in my office were talking as I walked by in the hallway. As I passed, one said to the other "That's the definition of Liberal. Being accepting." I barely made it to my office before I doubled over laughing.
Accepting was not a trait I would attribute to the "Liberals" I worked with. In this government office, you kept any non-Liberal views to yourself or end up ostracized and/or under some trumped up complaint.
They too were "tolerant" of all views not in opposition to their own.
No men, no meat, no Republicans, no TV, no smokers, no pets, no plants.

No life
I saw an ad in Boston many years ago: "open-minded person seeks roomate... no republicans." I wrote to explain what open-minded means, and the response was basically, "republicans aren't open-minded." I also got drummed out of a state government job when someone discovered that I was a deviant from the general line.
...no dictionary...
I love making fun of lefties as much as the next guy, but it's not intolerant to not want certain types of people LIVING with you. Not wanting them on the planet at all, that's intolerant.
My list would be: No radical Muslims, no BMW drivers, no thespians (i.e., waitresses), no lesbians, and no post-millenial eschatologists.

Of course, Bushbot conservatives are the paragons of tolerance. Do you have to troll classifieds to find some random nugget to prove your false thesis about how intolerant liberals are?
jakemeister, did you even bother to take time out of your busy schedule to read the thing? The point was not that all liberals were intolerant, a point that can be easily disproved by counter-example (as can most collectivist attributions, such as those against "Bushbot conservatives"), or even that there is a pervasive culture of hypocritical intolerance generally accepted by those who embrace the label, "Liberal", although there is substantial evidence to suggest that is the case, and that aspect did provide some ancillary humor. The main point was that one of her criteria was that her _roommate_ be tolerant despite her own obvious intolerance. In other words, the blatant, irrational, hypocricy of this one person.
