pure intellectualism without logic and asking difficult questions like, what happens next? is typical of where we are with things like environmentalism, social engineering (laws), etc.
we need good new ideas, but they need to be tested before they get accepted as dogma and can`t be changed.
a hundred years ago the patent office claimed that they felt there were no new discoveries to be made.
smart people. dumb idea.
sir issac newton was the head of the royal society and chancellor of the exchequer. (head of the mint.) many in the royal society who challenged his ideas found themselves tried for forgery.(dead)
kary mullis has a lot to say about the state of science today and it`s resistance to real inquiry.
kary is the nobel science prize-winner for discovering pcr, the way we study and analyse dna evidence. he was a witness in the oj simpson trial and a harsh critic of the aids/hiv connection, stating there is no scientific evidence to link the two.
Thanks for the very entertaining link! I'm reading Dr Sowell's book after watching another interview - a five part video recording at NRO's Uncommon Knowledge site (4-8 Jan 10) and highly recommend it as well.
Is the author as silly and ill informed as the interview suggests?
What is an "intellectual"? anyone who has finished college and perhaps writes or shows up on cable news or writes a book? In which case, Sowell is that which he dislikes. And "elitists"? That grand gathering of aristocrats who gave us the foundation for our new nation in 1996?
Man Nathan you sound bitter. Why don't you leave? Sowell is probably one of the greatest econ authors there is and especially bringing arcan econ terminology down to the everyman's level and making it understandable. Sowell isn't the silly one. You are.
Kevin, stupidity is MUCH more common than insanity. Sadly, believing the progressive lies are even more common than stupidity, thought I bet there is considerable overlap.
So it is a difficult call to make in nathan's case. I can see disagreeing with Thomas Sowell, but to repudiate his intellect is a mark of intellectual poverty.
Trey: I am particularly fond of Sowell. He is the only commentator I can stand.
Beck, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, Coulter...idiots all. I can't believe people take those dumbasses seriously. Beck should be medicated, for God's sake! He's practically a 9/11 Troofer with his idiotic chalkboard and hysterical rants.
Sowell is like a glass of Montrachet in a room overflowing with Muscatel, a Johannes Vermeer in a museum choking with Warhols, or hearing the Berlin Philharmonic playing Rossini's La Gazza Ladra when all around are listening to Lady Gaga on their iPods.
Okay. Maybe I watch too much "Frasier." But you get the point.

reminds me of filters against folly in some ways.

interesting comments about rhetoric.
"Is the author as silly and ill informed as the interview suggests?"
Thomas Sowell? Silly? Really?
Nathan are you as silly and ill informed as your post suggests?
Trey
If Nathan can read "The Vision of the Anointed" and call that "silly," then he's a candidate for the loony hatch.
Nathan can't even get the year of the nation's founding right within 220 years. Pay no attention to the troll.

Kevin, check out Walter Williams, he is not to shabby either.
Nice wine metaphor too!
