"Before the war, fascism was widely viewed as a progressive social movement with many liberal and left-wing adherents in Europe and the United States... -- P.9"
tell that to those who fought against
Franco...tell that to the Nazis and Italians supporting Franco...tell that to the communists who were made to murdered or sent to the camps in Germany under Hitler...tell that to those familiar with the French underground

Fred, I believe Goldberg makes the point in his book that Communism and Fascism were so mutually hostile because they were competing for the same base.

Fred, Goldberg's book provides quotes from many prominent liberals of the era who had favorable things to say about fascism. Many does not equal all, though, and he never said it did.

Fascism and communism were two sides of the same coin. While there were differences, the similarities are far more important. Both featured all powerful governments, secret police, concentration camps, mass starvation, and mass murder.

Both communism and fascism resulted in the deaths of millions. By some counts, communism alone was responsible for the deaths of over 100 million people. Mao and Stalin were the two biggest mass murderers of all time but probably the main reason was they were in power far longer than Hitler. Throw in communists like Pol Pot and those who took over Vietnam and the body count is very high. In a way, it's almost obscene trying to discuss which mass murderer was worse than the others. They were all terrible. If there is a God in heaven, they all should be in the most unpleasant corner of Hell.
