If you are intestested in learning more about serial killers, The Biography Channel is running a series of shows starting this week. I appear as one of the experts on four of the shows.

The first of those, on serial killer Jerome Brudos, airs tonight, Friday (Jan. 23rd) at 8 pm ET and runs again on Saturday (Jan.24th) at midnight. Here is a description of the show:
His mother had wanted a girl, an innocent enough disappointment. However, in Jerome Brudos' case, it somehow spiraled out of control first into a fetish and then into murder. As a teenager, he would assault women, stealing their shoes. By the time he was a married adult living in suburban Portland, his criminal activities had advanced. Over a fifteen month period Brudos killed four times, starting with a woman who had come to his house selling door-to-door. When he was captured he was found hiding under blankets while his wife drove the family car. Searches of the Brudos' home turned up women's clothing and shoes in Jerome's sizes. He died in prison in 2006 where he had continued to receive women's shoe catalogs.

That's pretty interesting. I'm not sure why we find serial killers fascinating— probably the fact that there is some internal reason for the murders, one that can be seen as explanatory. It's not accidental, why the victims are chosen.
And it never seems quite real, does it? I mean, I was walking after dark on the same streets when a serial killer was operating (Spokane at the turn of this century) and it still never seemed dangerous. (I was working at a news station and hear a number of details that were never broadcast. Ew.)
heard
I'll have to check it out. The documentaries on serial killers on Biography are fascinating. Absolutely fascinating.

Darn it, our Dish Network package doesnt offer the Biography Channel!!!! Found out I will have to upgrade to a package that cost s about $60.00 per month extra to get the Bio Channel, Nat Geo channel and the SLTH (Has a lot of true crime documentaries) and Military channels!!! All we get is a bunch of movie channels that show stupid romantic chick-flick movies.
Danny,
Don't sweat it, I bet these shows will re-run forever and be on other stations like A & E etc. I onced did a show years ago for the Learning Channel and Discovery and three years later, it was on another channel in Sweden of all places--a reader from there wrote to tell me about it. So I imagine you may catch it one day.
Serial killers tend to be quite popular with women. They are usually swamped with love letters and marriage proposals while in prison.
May we get a list of specific shows and times? I'd like to set my DVR to record, but am unwilling to wade through a bunch of celebrity biographies to find the ones I want, and I don't see a way to differentiate so my DVR would understand.
Thanks.

(reply #90 - PIC is from the shed adjacent to the abandoned farmhouse where Meredith Hope emerson, frayed the rope, broke loose, and fought GMH, the 3rd time during her abduction. Not the Sears; stereo speaker, that GMH, used to prop up the shed to prevent it from collapsing.
Wolfscratch
The area of the Appalachians. where I live, and where GMH's primary den is located was labeled 'Wolfscratch', by the Cherokees. The only book that I have read since college is 'Wolfscratch Wilderness'; a walk back in time of this area. Unless of course, you count the 380+ pages of redacted pretrial evidence, in the Death Penalty Trial of Gary Hilton, for the abduction and murder of Cheryl Dunlap in Tallahassee, FL.
I am confident that the books given to Cheryl Dunlap, and Meredith Emerson, by GMH, came from used book and thrift stores. GMH, had been eyewitnessed in the Jasper, GA Thrift Store on many occasions by volunteers/employees.
I have had alot of times on my hands lately and thought I would go to the Thrift store and check out their selection of books. Of 3 shelves of books, 1 shelf was dedicated to 'Serial Killers'. I purchased several of the books. After researching the authors, I found that although the stories are fiction,(portrayed fictitciously for liability purposes) many are based on actual events, with consultants from Mental Institutions, LE, profilers, & Justice Officials, both retired and active.
The last book that I read is tittled 'Mind Tryst', by Robin Carr. After reading the book, I inadvertantly opened the cover and saw where the books original purchase was made:

This is Gary M. Hilton's old stomping grounds...Coincidence, maybe...
Gary Hilton: Misfit with a mean streak | ajc.com
Gary Hilton was officially charged with the murder of hiker Meredith .... though Tabor let Hilton live at a building he owned on Clairmont Road
Something that I noticed to be curious about the majority of the over 25 books purchased was that their copyright dates were from the 1980's to the late 1990's.
Many of the books were of serial killers that were copycat killers of individual serial killers past.
Gary Michael Hilton, had no victim profile, breaks all molds of serial killers profiled, changed hiis MOs, signature, and method of abduction.
He was very creative and emulated a soldier on a perpetual manuever,
as well as a 'Traveling Preacher', long distant hiker, and a kyaker.

QUOTE]By the ninth day of searching, investigators were following up on leads. One officer received information that Dunlap had been seen at Leon Sinks reading a book by V.C. Andrews; "Flowers in the Attic":
The book's success was not without controversy. The discussion of a sexual relationship that develops between an adolescent brother and sister in the novel has led to its being banned in certain areas at different times. The Richmond High School in Rhode Island removed it because it contained "offensive passages concerning incest and sexual intercourse". In 1994, it was removed from the Oconee County school libraries due to "the filthiness of the material".[
A detective checked bookstores in Tallahassee, including the Borders on Apalachee Parkway, to see whether Cheryl Dunlap, had purchased books

Think, the question should have been, whether GMH, had purchased the book, or books. Friends of Cheryl, said that 'Flowers in the Attic', would not be a book that she would have read or purchased...
