Political intolerance at the New School
I was dismayed to read about a protest at my Alma mater, The New School for Social Research. It seems that Bob Kerrey, the president, is not sufficiently lefty enough for the school:
It seems that the intolerant students have joined their professors in protest-- but rather than settle things peacefully, they chase, taunt and throw things at a crippled man:
I must say that I was not impressed with the political tolerance at the time I went to graduate school there and now, I am less so. I hope these cowardly students rot in hell.
Here is video of the students insulting Kerrey--honestly, they look and sound more laughable and silly then anything else:
Mr. Kerrey has clashed with some professors since the day of his appointment as the New School’s president, with complaints that he lacks a Ph.D. and that his politics —particularly his early support for the Iraq war — were too moderate for the unabashedly liberal campus.
It seems that the intolerant students have joined their professors in protest-- but rather than settle things peacefully, they chase, taunt and throw things at a crippled man:
A little after 11:30 p.m., Mr. Kerrey emerged from a university building on Fifth Avenue south of 14th Street to a sea of a few hundred protesters chanting for his resignation. As Mr. Kerrey walked down Fifth Avenue toward 12th Street, about 30 protesters began following him, some of them shouting insults.
As the crowd’s pace quickened, so did Mr. Kerrey’s. Then, Mr. Kerrey, who lost a part of his leg in Vietnam and wears a prosthesis, broke into a run. The protesters gave chase. Mr. Kerrey turned left on a cross street and ducked into a brownstone.
At some point in the confrontation, a protester threw a tomato at Mr. Kerrey.
I must say that I was not impressed with the political tolerance at the time I went to graduate school there and now, I am less so. I hope these cowardly students rot in hell.

This "protest" at the New School never happened. It's all just perception created by the media, like the so-called economic problem.

You're probably just out to cause trouble and not dialogue, but I'll respond to your illogic any.
Dr. H. never said the economic problems are not real, she is merely asking how much of the problem may be due to perception. For example, if a front page headline in any town read "Local Bank rumored to be facing bankruptcy," the actual situation would become even worse due to the reaction. It is, as those of us who took Economics 101 in college, called "the self-fulfilling prophecy." And she is not out of line to have an opinion that the media's hatred of Bush exacerbates their negative reporting any more than the left is out of line to think Limbaugh will tilt the story against Obama.
I find it amusing that the left often rails against the intolerance of the right, but the left by far exhibits the most intolerance. It's not even close.
Trust:
It is not intolerance to respond to illogic written on someone's blog. Your response is perfectly reasonable, except it is not what Dr. Helen has written.
Dr. Helen has repeatedly stated that the media were out to hurt McCain in the election and therefore trumpeted economic problems, yet she never explained why President Bush and Vice President Cheney blew the trumpets the loudest.

If I misunderstood the tone of your post, I apologize.
Bush, as president, is acting to address problem. Dr. H. simply makes the point, and I agree, that the media has political motivations for what they exaggerate.
Happy New Year
I look at it this way: A liberal is usually only a liberal until they've been raped or mugged a couple times, either literally or figuratively. Then, suddenly, they have a sort of epiphany and become a conservative with a CCW.
OK, I'm sorry I'm cluttering the comments with this stuff. I just grimace at gratuitous, illogical slaps at the media when there's plenty of valid complaints to be made. It's like someone saying, "Boy this steak is undercooked, but what else should we expect from the media?"
Happy New Year's all. Shutting up now.
(:
I find such student protests ironic. Heaven forbid college students should flood their campus paper, or the local paper, in this case The New York Times, with cogent and persuasive letters arguing their position. Heaven forbid they should organize a forum to air their impassioned and eloquent grievances.
Instead, you get what to the eye appears to be nothing more than a mob of half-savage, inarticulate 20 year olds shouting and waving their arms.
Colleges that turn out these kinds of students would close their doors in shame -- if they had shame.
Isn't this situation indicative of what's wrong in academia today? That we're fostering an environment not of curiosity and open-mindedness but of ignorant bitterness?
And, for what it's worth, isn't the President of the University more of a Chief Executive rather than a Chief Educator? In other words, does it matter that he doesn't have a PhD? No offense to any of the educated class, but I think the professors are taking themselves a bit too seriously in that regard.
Helen, you filed this under "liberal fascism."
Isn't that redundant?

A necessary redundancy. Most people have been lead to believe that fascism (as well as Nazism) are far-right doctrines when in fact they are far left worship of the State, similar to communism and socialism.
As you move right, you have doctrines such as capitalism (limited rule by humans), theocracy (little "t", rule by god without human rule) and anarchy (no law, no role).
Funny thing about fascism and Nazism is that because people think it is far right, when they think they are running from it they are actually sprinting towards it. Unfortunately, Republicans must get due credit for moving their party leftward and feeding the belief that fascism is far right.
Happy New Year.
Trust, I think Pete just forgot to finish his comment with "/sarcasm".
Some things never change: I remember encountering thuggish progressives in the 80's...and the 70's...and the 60's. Some things never change. Time to treat progressives with the same degree of tolerance as Klan members--in other words, none.

Probably, but some readers from the [sarcasm/] tolerant, open minded, and intellectual [/sarcasm] side of the spectrum might have not got the point.
This from the school that brought us "freshpeople" instead of "freshmen"
Eventually they will just kill those who are too slow or weak to get out of the way. They haven't tasted blood yet, is all. It probably has happened but was reported as a random crime, not investigated, or such. It just isn't big, yet. And out there. Then again, would the papers print about Obama supporters killing someone who voted for Bush, for that reason? They didn't even report that the killer of the blond haired, blue-eyed bombshell was black... until after the elections, and then very... quietly.
This guy and situation is a bit high profile for them, though, I think? Hey, it is what I think... believe... even see coming, potentially. The 2nd amendment presents some definite stumbling blocks however, for now.
I anticipate our government will bail out the newspapers, and also invoke the fairness doctrine.
If Franken "wins" Minnesota, I anticipate he will take his behavior to the hill. By that I mean the way he acted with Bill O'Reilly in speeches, some of which may still be available for view on You Tube. It will be interesting to see what happens to You Tube once the doctrine is invoked. It leans heavy to the left now, so I figure any video posts from the right will disappear altogether.
I have actually wondered if we may have seen the last peaceful transition of power in our country this election cycle.
Recently I started to watch CNN and MSNBC a little. Usually I do not watch them at all and have not for years. The spin is like watching the news from some anti- American nation. It does not scare me. But it does make me angry.
There's a special place in hell for those who attack cripples, steal Christmas presents, and abuse the elderly.
Pureeing puppies is fine though. :-)
Liberals believe that they are so right that any means justifies their ends. Mostly they end up looking like their ends. A bunch of asses.

Ironically, I posted the above yesterday and I found the below YouTube video on accident today. It describes the political spectrum left to right. Good view, cites Benjamin Franklin.

That you tube blurb was a pretty simple and straight forward explanation of types of government. A republic is the only logical choice for a government. I'd like to see it used in 7th grade social studies. I'd also like to see government taught in 9th grade, since so many kids don't make it all the way through high school anymore.
.....and to the republic for which it stands.........
I have tried to substitute "democracy", "oligarchy", "socialist republic", etc., for "republic" in the line above. And don't ya know, nothing else fits.
What I see from the liberal left, at "street level", is an attempt at mob rule. They are elbowing their wants into the system.
What I see coming from the hill, is a slow turn toward an oligarchy, with the left attempting to squeeze out the right in order to run the whole shebang. The left does not want a balance of power. When the pendulum swings far enough in one direction where it flies in the face of enough people, it will again get shoved back in the other direction.

Personally, I have to wonder if this is why so many on the left want such tight restrictions on gun ownership, or flat want to take guns away. When you know who has the guns, or have taken them away, it becomes much more difficult for those people to force thier way back in.
Similar to the "He who has the gold, rules". - "He who has the gun, rules".
One last question....for those who push through the gun legislation (politicians), why are they protected by people with.....guns? hypocrites much?
wolfboy: I have been stating openly and out loud the very things you said above, for a very long time.
Taking guns away from legal, licensed gun owners has nothing to do with crime. Not by those pushing the real agenda from behind the scenes, anyway. In my mind, the followers are being duped. And it's as if they believe that all this political change they want will not affect them at all, just those who do not agree with their socialist agenda.
The liberal, or progressive left, to me, are looking more like Bolsheviks on a daily basis.
Currently, I can't find the quote, but I saw it on protein wisdom; it was Saul Alinsky citing a statement by Vladimir Lenin in one of Alinsky's books.
Basically, Lenin stated that while "they" have the guns, we will be for change through the ballot. When "we" have the guns, then it will be through the bullet. As we all know, when Lenin's side got the guns, it was most assuredly through the bullet.
The left is a bunch of individual groups that are basically becoming mob like. A "true democracy" can allow for that. (I cite, We're here, we're queer, get used to it!", the video was on You Tube) As they eventually band together, things will get interesting. The groups elbow their way into meetings, seminars, or other gatherings, shouting their mantras, disrupting and shutting down the venue they force themselves into. Without any means for one to protect hearth and home, how long before they march through the front door?
It can't happen here. Well, I submit it IS happening here, one day at a time.
