I totally agree with your " Wild West" metaphor . . . also comparable with Florence vs. the later Roman flowering of the Renaissance, I think. The earlier, wild-and-wooly phase of things has always been where my heart is.
I totally share your paranoia re the future of this wondrous bauble we call the internet:
"The individual blogger seems to be getting scarcer and is being replaced by more professional bloggers who work for or with others. I love the individual freedom of blogging and my biggest fear is that the Internet will start to look like a microcosm of where our society is heading - that is, the collective will start to win out and regulate the Internet while individuals have fewer and fewer rights. I hope I am just being paranoid here."
You may be paranoid, but that doesn't mean they're not out to get you. :-)
