Michelle Obama: Men are Selfish and a Mess
Jim Geraghty at National Review points out an article at The New Republic on Michelle Obama that indicates how she feels about men--they're selfish and a mess:
If male politicians spoke this way about women--"they're all selfish and a mess!"-- heads would roll, but Michelle Obama is seen as "outspoken" and independent. You go girl! But just remember that your husband needs votes from the very block of people you are dissing. In fact, some speculate that men might just be the deciding voting block in this election. You might want to choose your words more carefully.
In a 2004 interview with the Chicago Tribune, Michelle observed: "What I notice about men, all men, is that their order is me, my family, God is in there somewhere, but me is first. ... And, for women, me is fourth, and that's not healthy." This is not a radical observation: Get a half-dozen gals together with a few bottles of Beaujolais, and a similar theme will eventually emerge. (Trust me on this.).....
But, when she talks smack about her husband's hygiene, she sounds like any old housewife gabbing to her girlfriends about what a hopeless mess her man is. It's a clever approach, winning Michelle props for being outspoken and un-Stepford, even as she avoids alienating more traditional voters by keeping her focus on the family.

I haven't clicked over to read the full article. The quote you use doesn't imply that she calls men selfish. She says that men take care of themselves first, something that women have been trying to convince each other to do for a decade. If you don't take care of yourself, you won't be able to take care of anyone else.
What I notice about men, all men, is that their order is me, my family, God is in there somewhere, but me is first - Mrs. Obama
Eh? Dunno the type of men she's been hanging out with but my experience has been that (for Christian men) the order goes -
1)God
2)Family
3)Me (if the man even mentions himself at all when discussing these priorities)
Try reading to page 4 of the article and you'll see this:
As for her on-the-trail patter, Michelle is far from a feminist bomb-thrower, instead relying heavily on conventional, even old-fashioned, material. She gigs Barack for being too much of a guy: messy, thoughtless, and only marginally competent when it comes to life maintenance. More than once, Michelle has laughed about how she assigns Barack easy-to-manage projects, like procuring balloons for their daughter's birthday party, rather than anything more involved, like picking out goodie bags--"You'd walk in there and wander around the aisles for an hour, and then your head would explode." It's a folksy, humanizing shtick guaranteed to have women nodding en masse in amused agreement precisely because it is such well-trod territory. Women have long bonded over the knowledge that their men, though masters of the universe, are a disaster on the home front.
Women may chuckle at crap like this but a lot of men just see a nagging screw. At some point, her husband is going to have to tell her that alienating so much of the electorate is not smart politics.
If she's so unhappy, let her hire a maid. Both she and her husband have 6 figure incomes so they can afford to hire a service to help with domestic chores.
Gee Cathy, why not read the article? In it Ms. Obama says: "She gigs Barack for being too much of a guy: messy, thoughtless, and only marginally competent when it comes to life maintenance. More than once, Michelle has laughed about how she assigns Barack easy-to-manage projects, like procuring balloons for their daughter's birthday party, rather than anything more involved, like picking out goodie bags--"You'd walk in there and wander around the aisles for an hour, and then your head would explode." She says this to the man she wants to be leader of the free world???? She thinks this way about all men???
That does not imply selfishness, it calls all men "messy, thoughtless, and marginally competent."
Why not read the article before you share your wisdom, otherwise, you will look foolish and uninformed. Unless it is just that all women make pronouncements about matters in which they are ignorant.
Did that last statement strike you as nasty and sexist? Good, now you have an inkling what it is like for a man to read misandry.
For the record, it is just you that posted about an article without reading it, and you may have just done this one time, so I cannot generalize about you or women in general and do not care to.
Why not read it then get back to us.

If she was really like that, I'd be out the door in two seconds from that pig.
Why do men have any interest in staying with women like that? What do they get out of it besides heartburn?
Just goes to show that the Barak and Michelle combo, would spell diaster if they managed to get themselves installed in the White House.
Isee them mostly as manifoulative Affirmative-action using lader climbing egomaniacs.
"Get a half-dozen gals together with a few bottles of Beaujolais, and a similar theme will eventually emerge. (Trust me on this.)"
Note to reporter Michelle Cottle -- six drunk women commiserating about their so's is no more a reliable news source than six drunk men talking about theirs.
Absolutely everybody everywhere's first priority is themselves. Sometimes it is somebody's best interest to make another person a priority but it is for good reason, usually economic.
That being said I find it horrifying when women, no matter from which political side as many do it, try to pontificate that they put their family first or God first or whatever first and they deserve big kudos for being so humble. These women are plying a big pile of BS.
As I recall, Pat Nixon and Nancy Reagan were big on this type of dogma as well. First ladies and prospective first ladies want to occupy the White House just as much as their husbands. It's a team project.

All men? I resent that. I am able to type this at this time of the day because I am on medical leave to help my wife through a second bout with ovarian cancer. It took two surgeries and a month of nonstop care at home in 2006, when she was just 30. Now, at 32, she is going through it all over again. And I don't care how much income I lose, I'll be here every minute she needs me. She comes first.
Maybe this is why she has never been proud of her country--because she thinks it is run solely by men, and "all men" are selfish.
Why did she marry a man if "all men" are like this? Is Barack not a man? Or, since Bill Clinton has already been our "first black president," is Barack looking to be the "first woman president?"
I think the Obamas are decent people. But their naivity and inability to grasp reality scares me.
Absolutely everybody everywhere's first priority is themselves. Sometimes it is somebody's best interest to make another person a priority but it is for good reason, usually economic.
Really? You're not a parent, are you? Or married?
Or maybe I just don't understand your definition of priority, or what you mean by "economic reasons" for making someone else a priority for a time.
Trust, way to be a man. I cannot imagine what you are going through, and it is a little frightening to think of myself in your position.
My prayers are with you and your wife. God bless you both.
Trey
Thanks, Trey. I'm just an average guy who meant it when he said "in sickness and in health."
For those of us, not the least of which is my wife who is receiving excellent health care, who fear a universal health care system, the best thing that could happen would be for Michelle Obama to keep on talking. Then again, I doubt her sexist remarks will get much air time.
"Decent people" don't engage in stereotypical bigotry.
She is a sexist sow.
@sgt ted:
I'd be lying if I said I had never made some stupid, offhanded remark about women. Just as my wife has made similar comments about men. But neither one of us were in front of a national audience in a presidential campaign.
That is one thing about media darlings--they are not scrutinized enough, so they slip up because they let their guard now.
I'll never vote Obama, but if she apologizes I'd forget it and drop it.
I had to touch on this a few days ago. Why does Obama seemingly surround himself with women who don't respect him?
My point being, if they don't respect him, why should I?
His advisers throw him under the bus and his wife just rags on him every chance. Why does he not also have some high-profile men in his campaign? I mean, other than Rezko.
Well, her comments were made nearly four years ago. I'm not sure she was quite so used to the spotlight yet. That said, you'd think anyone would want to be careful what they say to the media anytime.
I can only imagine what pet charities she'd champion once in the White House: "First Lady Starts Foundation To Teach Men Hygiene, Housekeeping, and Gift-Bag-Selection Skills".
I'm really going to miss Laura Bush. Regardless of politics, she's a class act.
thom,
Thanks for the clarification. I didn't get the 4 years ago part. Then again, that was during Barack's senate campaign and keynote speach year.
Not smart of the spouse of a candidate for dog catcher, much less for washington.
Best,
trust
Agreed, Trust. Her comments--and others that have been reported (follow joan's link)--suggest a woman who at best does not respect her husband's career, and at worst does not respect her husband.
I'm just an average joe, but I know enough that watch my mouth when someone points a microphone at me. I've been known to make unkind, sweeping judgements about men and women both, but get me near a reporter and you'd never hear it, let alone EVER catch me badmouthing my wife like that.
It's one thing to make a smartass offhand comment about something. It's quite another to deliberately spew sexist garbage to a reporter or on a stage. Her comments reveal an ignorant bigot; it's just hip to slam men these days.
If it were a male spouse of a Presidential candidate talking to the national audience about how ALL women are airheaded, superficial and can't be trusted with money or behind the wheel of a car, the reaction would be quite different.
I say let her keep talking, and don't give her any hints as to what others may be seeing in what she is saying.
The more Hillary talks, the more she slips. Of course, Bill isn't helping much.
Probably why she's gabbing about the Clinton - Obama ticket. She wants it that bad, she'd take half the lime light loaf, rather than none.
All she really wants is to hear the magic words: "Ladies and gentlemen, the FIRST woman President of the United States...HILLARY CLINTON!
Ah, the smell of the grease paint, the roar of the crowd.
I'll never vote Obama, but if she apologizes I'd forget it and drop it.
That's mighty big of you.
Her comments reveal an ignorant bigot; it's just hip to slam men these days.
You poor little semicolonian.
@fgfm: "That's mighty big of you."
Thanks for the input.
In my experience, most people who complain about their spouse putting their self first want to be first. Michelle Obama sounds like a successful, ambitious woman who is angry that her husband in more successful.
In the relating of the Obama household, Michelle O. appears to want everything to be the way she wants it. When Barak doesn't meet her expectations, there's something wrong with him rather than her being intolerant or uncompromising.
Her "conventional, even old-fashioned, material" is the same man-hating drivel men have listened to from men-hating women for centuries.
Ahh- its the smarmy troll Fgfm-- whose ignorance and mindless ad hominems know no bounds.
Hers's an example of the incisive commentary from this hybrid of Pee Wee Herman, Stuart Smalley, and Eddie Haskell -- dressed in drag, ready for some spunkless verbal masturbation like --

I love that story.
Her "conventional, even old-fashioned, material" is the same man-hating drivel men have listened to from men-hating women for centuries.
Not a big surprise that a guy who calls himself "Dadvocate" and writes crap like "DrHelen posted today on how gender feminist [sic] want to start" would feel that way.
Thanks for the input.
I forgive you.
You go girl! But just remember that your husband needs votes from the very block of people you are dissing.
I love it when DMOP tries to go "ethnic" on us.
fgfm, do you have ANYTHING useful to contribute? You disagree, we get that. Will you actually make an intellectual argument, or do you just like making as ass of yourself?
You clearly think you're superior. I hope you stop acting like a adolescent and demonstrate your supposed superiority.
I don't want your forgiveness.
Michelle Obama sounds like a successful, ambitious woman who is angry that her husband in more successful.
I am usually very skeptical of criticism based on someone's assumed psychological motives. But I have to admit that Michelle Obama's statements strike me as being very off-key for someone with her education and professional background.
It's one thing to discuss Senator Obama's foibles in a manner which might endear him to her audience - e.g. "Obama gets so wrapped-up in his work that he reminds me of the absent minded professor". Rather she depicts him as lacking common sense and being incompetent with simple tasks. That is, she seems to want to 'take him down a peg'. It's surprising to me that someone from his campaign doesn't put a stop to this - but it may be that no one has the authority to.
There is one other public comment that she has made, regarding her husband, which could be indicative of her character. She had told a reporter that when she met Barack Obama at Sidley Austin ( a law firm ), she didn't initially want to date him because she thought that it would be 'tacky' for the only two African-Americans at the firm to start dating. Perhaps this is a pressing concern for Black professionals, but it also suggests that she regarded her romantic life as a vehicle for her professional life.
"What I notice about men...me is first."
She really needs to stop socializing with liberals.
Michelle Obama probably has great difficulty suppressing such comments because she has spent her entire life in social circles wehere such casual bigotry is entirely acceptable.
What Michelle Obama said was annoying, but not _that_ big a deal.
Dr. Helen, I had a similar take on Ms. Obama.
"Absolutely everybody everywhere's first priority is themselves."
Sort of like this guy?
I posted comments along these lines about Michelle Obama last summer. I've heard her interviewed and speak several times and she revels in putting down her husband. Even worse, she has betrayed the confidences of marriage. It is one thing to confide in a trusted friend or counselor while seeking advice and another to expose your mate's personal foibles to the world.
(And it speaks very poorly of Barak that he allows himself to be so emasculated for the sake of power.)
Trust,
"I think the Obamas are decent people."
I'm not so sure. ISTM that decent people don't say nasty stuff like Ms. Obama is quoted as saying; they say stuff more like what you said.
I'm 52 with 5 children and four grandkids, my wife died four years ago. I cook, I clean, I go to work 55 hours a week, minimum, I do windows. I get one day a month with my buddies and Saturday night with my girlfriend. The rest of my life is spent getting the youngest through college and doing laundry. I just got back from dropping off a home cooked meal for my sick daughter.
All men, Michelle? All of us? No wonder she has no pride in this country, she doesn't live here.
Only now is this woman who makes over three hundred thousand dollars a year proud of her country. A minority woman at that. A woman who had she grown up in her husband's father's country would not have a law degree, probably not have all her "girl parts".
This woman is part of the privileged few, in large part because of the help from the ordinary taxpayers and only now is she proud of her country.
That pair is despicable.
I'm not a democrat, not a liberal. I do not care who is running for office in that party. I just don't vote in that direction. There are many who believe one should not simply vote along party lines. Vote for the individual. I wish it were that simple, and politicians were that transparent.
I have seen many fgfm's come and go. It is almost like they are on a rotation. Next! I honestly asked fgfm, like I have so many others that have graced this blog, a few questions here and there in the hopes a true dialog could be opened. It simply never happens.
She gigs Barack for being too much of a guy: messy, thoughtless, and only marginally competent when it comes to life maintenance. More than once, Michelle has laughed about how she assigns Barack easy-to-manage projects, like procuring balloons for their daughter's birthday party, rather than anything more involved, like picking out goodie bags
"life maintenance", eh? She means maintaining her life in just the way she wants it.
Notices how she decides it's her prerogative to assign him trivial stuff to do? And then complains when he gets it wrong? Hon, let me break it to you gently, HE'S A SENATOR. He may have a few more things on his mind that whatever silly crap you come up with to make him do for you.
What's really funny about this is she is the one crying "me, me, me" because not every waking minute of his life is not spent fulfilling her needs.
Trust,
"You clearly think you're superior. I hope you stop acting like a adolescent and demonstrate your supposed superiority."
No Trust, this guy is actually frightened. He is afraid that people will come here and listen to what is being said and think, "Hmmm, that might make some sense." His juvenile attempts at trolling are just a way to reflect that fear--even if it seems that he is trying to "act superior."
FGFM,
You are not welcome here.
He can't even keep this demanding sow under control and he thinks he can run the whole United States.
One thing at a time, Barack.
After Ms Obama
As far as the Governor of new York -- Mr Spitzer-- and his sexual activities --
I wonder what his wife did -- or didn't -- do to him to make make him have to visit prostitutes ?
Clearly she is not performing up to expectations in the bedroom-- so her man is forced to seek solace or expertise somewhere else.
All men in our society are suffering terribly from the noxious consequences of the pathetic sexual performance of all women-- depression, artherosclerosis, diabetes, shortened life span, cataracts, tinnitis, ulcers, halitosis, flatulence, excessive swallowing of our own saliva, and inevitably-- suicide.
All women== ALL-- need extensive training in the area of pleasing a man sexually-- so men will not be victimized by women's ineptness and be forced to go to professionals-- or seek a divorce-- or -shoot their wife in her sleep in a "brief psychotic reaction" brought on by this chronic sexual neglect.
Mr Spitzer is a victim.
He needs our understanding and support and == counseling.
His wife should be arrested, however.
Compulsory training to improve her sexual performance is necessary.
Us guys got to together and talked about how stupid, fat, lazy, and incompetent all women are and why Mr Spitzer was victimized. We decided to criminalize feamle sexual incompetence-- us men being the sole judge of their adequacy as sexual performers. I mean-- what else are they good for anyway ?
IB
Since this is convenient.
Given Client 9 and the price of expensive arm candy; and, this candy being, to parahrase the site's promo, some of society's choicest meat: the woman are fashion models, pageant winners, women in successful careers, etc..., What does this say of the arm candy on "successful" men's arms? What does this say about their wives?
It does say Obama and Bill made poor chioces. At least John Sidney made a good one. And Bill is now globe trotting to rectify the situation.
I wonder what Whiskey would say.
I once knew a former private secretary to a governor who kept a file of society women who made themselves available to the governor.
fgfm, do you have ANYTHING useful to contribute? You disagree, we get that. Will you actually make an intellectual argument, or do you just like making as ass of yourself?

fgfm falls into the category of commentor that I call a "leg humper". He/she is like a little near-sighted dog humping a table leg - thinking he's scoring big but really looking like an idiot.
Michelle Obama is like many high achieving blacks (those outside of sports, music, acting, comedy) who resent presumed (sometimes real)white suspicion of their abilities.
These people who've really earned it are too ready to blame some nefarious pervasive racism on the part of whites, instead of at the inherently corrosive nature of affirmative action. Unfortunately, doubt by others (at least initially) is a *rational* response.
On a relate note, yesterday I was sitting with my father-in-law who has bouts of dementia so my mother-in-law could go get her hair done (I was off while my wife was working).
Anyway, I watched The View - until I had a bellyful and changed the channel.
They were discussing how none of th e candidates was perfect, so what were the "dealbreakers" for them. Whoopi and Joy preemptively brought up Bill Clinton's Lewinsky mess so they could dismiss it -- "no biggie, other presidents have had affairs" (ignoring that none of them had such poor judgement to pull the intern in the Oval Office plus perjury bit.)
The thing that got me in particular was this:
Joy Behar mentioned being at a party in the last few nights, with mostly couples in their 50s, and she expressed surprise that it seemed the *men* were hardest on Bill -- she then slammed them by saying "maybe they're just jealous."
That really pissed me off -- I wanted to ask her if it ever occurred to her that *real* "men" might be deeply offended by the implicit "all men are pigs anyway" in liberal women giving Bill a pass? That there is such a thing as honor after all?
Love me like a reptile said, well, a lot of gibberish about how Spitzer is a "victim" and blamed his wife for his hypocricy.
I think you are a baiting troll who cannot distinguish between anger at misandry and hatred of women. Prove me wrong! I love being wrong about stuff like that.
Take a moment to evaluate how a law and order candidate who spends $4000 on whores is a hypocritical pig who should resign in disgrace. Imagine the shame and ignomy he has cast upon his wife and family, and hold him responsible for his own actions. Just for a moment, as an experiment in expecting personal responsibility from people.
You might actually grow to like it.
Trey
Love me like a reptile is being satirical.
Mrs Spitzer is from the same social melieu as the Emperors Clubs women: the creme de la creme: she got her man earlier.
I'm not being satirical: I'm a complete cynic.
NJartist, perhaps satirical, or perhaps trolling! We shall see I hope, and I hope you are right.
Trey
By the way, Michelle isn't even working now.
Barack is paying a friggin' useless housewife to insult him and all men.
And, in poetic justice, she is being supported by the gender she apparently has lost no love for. What a spoiled brat.

Trey, you hit the nail on the head several times in rapid succession here. Rock on.
joan, your concerns are exactly mine regarding Mr. O. It does begin to explain, though, in a couple of none-too-complimentary ways, why he's always on about "hope" and in such vague ways.
JG, elaborate please, I am unaware of my smugness, and I really don't like smug people.
Honest. I look forward to your feedback.
Trey
JG, no need to delete your comment, I support your right to criticize me. God knows I can get critical of other people's posts, so fair is fair.
I just want some more info so I see if I agree with you. What came across as smug?
Trey
Thanks for your feedback everyone. I shouldn't have responded to fgmg. I apologize for feeding the troll. Being new to this board, I knew not what I did.
Happy Tuesday.
i found love me liek a reptile to be using sarcasm/satire. to make a point.
I have a tendency to do that as well.
and trust, sometimes a troll can be useful, it focuses the mind wonderfully. but at a certain point you just have to give up.
(i sometimes find trolls to be amusing)
back on topic. The idea that a woman can say bad things about an electorate (about half), and still expect him to get the votes. To me that seems like a symptom of the greater problem.
Men are disenfranchised with politics, because theres nothing for them anymore. its mostly about what women want, single parents, maternity. The politicians have lost touch with the people.
But it would be interesting to see how many women vote because of michelles comments, and how many men dont.
@mecurior
You have a point. At risk of sounding like I'm making an ad hominem statement about women as Michelle has done about men, allow me to say that she probably didn't think twice about this statement, since women, in general, can get away things like this. Criticizing men publicly generates little scrutinity and usually cheers, but it is sort of taboo to say anything bad about women in general. I think that is a fair observation.
A funny story. I was in the break room at work last month, and a group of four women were sitting at a table talking about men. Loudly. Even with me and another man (Micah) in the room, they had no reservations about such proclaimations loudly and proudly. Five minutes later Micah and I bumped into each other in the mens room, and he whispered to me "could you imagine what would happen if we were in there talking about women like that?" I responded: "the very fact that they are saying it loudly in the open while we are whispering in the mens room should say something."
with me i always add, there are exceptions, i think that people believe we mean everyone, when its patently untrue. There are always exceptions to eveything but i dont count them ok.. ;-)
but isnt the idea that a senators wife as she was, presidential candidate now, could feel it was ok to say things like that, and to not be told that its wrong. Isnt that a symptom of a beleif that comments like that are justified because its against men.
The problem isn't women, it's men. Women are simply going to get away with what they can get away with.
I had a girlfriend years ago in her mid-30s who simply took more and more liberties. I put my foot down and dumped her. I think that was literally the first time in her life that a man had dumped HER. She was cute, and she did the dumping.
Men are wimps.
I worked with a guy who was putting in hellish hours trying to make partner. His sit-at-home wife (not even any kids) did nothing, he even hired a housekeeper for her. Then HE was saying how she had the hardest job in the world. His justification was that she "did all the scheduling". She scheduled their social life. She sat on her fat butt, watching Oprah and spouting all the "modern" crap we hear about men. Just like Michelle.
Men are wimps.
If Barack told her that she wasn't going to talk about him like that - and she did what I suspect she would do (grin and say, "what are you going to do about it?") - he should simply split from her. Have an attorney try to effect the split with the minimum damage to him.
If other men around her treated her the same way - they simply refused to be around her if she was insulting, which is how it should be - then her behavior would change. Cognitive surprise, baby.
But no, men are wimps that have to beg for sex and cater to a woman. Chivalry. Weakness.
So it will just continue on with pieces of crap like Michelle.
Michelle Obama sounds like a successful, ambitious woman who is angry that her husband in more successful.
Actually, if it wasn't for his book sales, she'd be making more money than him. In '06 Obama's baby mamma got paid (I won't say earns because it looks like a sinecure) $276K by the Univ. of Chicago Hospital, and Obama made $157K as a senator.
Michelle Obama is no longer working.
but its not that men are wimps, the system is skewed against men, if a man spoke out about those comments, he would be called sexist, and or racist.
if you cant speak out, can you be blamed when no one listens., if they split the system is pro woman, so he will be screwed financially.
as trust said "could you imagine what would happen if we were in there talking about women like that?" I responded: "the very fact that they are saying it loudly in the open while we are whispering in the mens room should say something."
so men arent really wimps, when you get penalised for speaking out, for not speaking out, its the path of least resistance. its not right. but its the easiest way to live
JG,
Although you and I might not like being talked to this way, Obama may not mind when his wife does it, perhaps he finds it sexy or has some attraction to belittling women, a number of men do. The problem is that she generalizes to all men and makes public statements (that her husband may enjoy) but that other men find belittling, narcissistic and/or unbecoming of a woman whose husband is running for President.
Some men take it because they think "that's the way it is".
Society as a whole no longer finds it cute when one spouse physically knocks the other around, at least in the case of a man knocking a woman around. Even if she herself may find it "normal".
In the same way that domestic violence awareness works, I'd also like to tell men: You don't have to put up with a zero like that. And those women truly are zeros, I've seen enough of them in my own life.
And to add insult to injury, many times men are SUPPORTING these mouthy brats while being belittled.
I would literally blow a gasket if I had to pay for a leech who also insulted me on top of it.
To men who "like" getting insulted: There truly is a better life out there.
Michelle Obama should keep quiet or learn about political etiquette.
BTW I found some fantastic articles…A MUST read for EVERYONE “The Hussein Dynamic” at http://savagepolitics.com/?p=171 and “Follow the Money” at http://savagepolitics.com/?p=165

yes exactly jg, unfortunatly, to do nothing, to say nothing is the path to a more peaceful life. constant comments about men have a wearying effect, they just want a little peace so they let things slide, which is wrong but understandable. a sort of no sense in provoking something if i can avoid it. you dont poke the bear with a sore head, with a sharp stick.
I speak out, as you may see, i get called a wimp because i speak out, that i should be a real man and go and do something about it. well i am, if i didnt i would be a wimp, i am a wimp if i do talk about it. its the same idea, damned if you do and damned if you dont.
thats why sites like this, and people like most of the commentors are good, we give reasons and we discuss. i may disagree with some of the posters, but that doesnt mean i hate them. this site empowers people men in particular just knowing there are people out there who do stand up and tell this is wrong.
and there are always exceptions to everything i say, but i dont count those
wha..... what on earth..?
@mercurior at 4:20PM
Good post.
As a husband, I will say I often keep my mouth shut so my wife won't drive me crazy. My wife, as suspect is the case with most wives, is far more verbally skilled than I. Not to mention far more tenacious.
I'm not saying that's an excuse, but it does make sense when you are copmaring the benefits of saying something with the costs of shutting thy lips.
Not to mention, I love my wife more than anything, and hate to be in conflict with her.
This comment has been removed by the author.
In many cases, including mine, I'm, as you are mercurior, reserved because I don't want to hurt my wife. She, as in many but certainly not all cases, is less reserved with me, not because she wants to hurt me, but because she thinks a man should be able to take it.
Some of my favorite writings on marriage are at loveandrespect.com. Dr. Eggerichs said that just as men don't fully understand what love means to a woman, a woman may not fully understand what respect means to a man. Therefore, she may think she's throwing a noodle in his face wheres he may feel his head is being bashed by a brick bat. Likewise, a man may withdraw to avoid conflict, whereas a wife may view this as neglect and even as a hostile rejection.
Dr. Eggerichs says neither husbands are wives are always right or always wrong, neithers priorities are good or bad, just different.

No self respecting man would act otherwise.
sorry deleted my last comment, i dont argue because if i win i will lose.
i used to have a speech problem, still do to some extent, but i over compensate, so i am good at arguing.
i dont want to hurt my wife,i love her to pieces. sometimes i do have to be shouty mart, sometimes its the only way i can get her to listen, and i always feel bad afterwards.
Michelle Obama: Cootie Tool
Seriously, she's just busting on the hubs because she thinks that's how women bond. Or maybe she's trying to demonstrate what a cool guy Barack is: he's got a sense of humor, he can take a joke even when it's on him, he's HUMBLE, people! Trouble is, she's coming off as slightly less sincere than Hillary.
Or maybe Dems just like guys who are...you know...whipped in a certain way.
trust: Why did she marry a man if "all men" are like this?
I was reading an interview with Steinem recently that was done 4 years ago. She mentioned that she married a guy but he passed away a few years later. Anyways as I was reading it, I was thinking along the same lines. Why do these rabid feminists bother getting married? In the article she mentions that gay marriage is important because it is a feminist issue. Since most gays are men, how does two men marrying each other help feminism?
Joan: I had to touch on this a few days ago.
I enjoyed your post and the comments.
some of them just love to feel they are suffering.
thats why some women marry the same kind over and over and over again. they need justification for thier feelings. at least thats my opinion and should only be treated as such
No Trust, this guy is actually frightened. He is afraid that people will come here and listen to what is being said and think, "Hmmm, that might make some sense."
Alan Keyes thought the same thing when people laughed at his TV show.
"thats why some women marry the same kind over and over and over again."
I think their may be some unconscious imprinting going on as well. Although it rankles me to think of myself as a little duckling following Konrad Lorenz in the pond!
Trey
sometimes it is subconcious, sometimes its known to the person.
its sort of why women like bad boys, they know they are bad, yet keep going after them. Of course some women just love the feeling of being a martyr.. that creature that bothers my wife, 4 times she went for bad boys, drug dealers, the first she met in prison.
Most men don't care. They're such pussies they probably agree with Ms. Obama.
Little cry-baby weaklings don't usually give much payback to an insult.
For reasons different than Ms. Obama's, men make me sick.
Well Jeff, it is much safer in our current society for you to say what you said about men than to make a comparable statement about women (or even just feminists). Perhaps many men are weak, but you're not displaying any particular courage in your post (and no, I do not mean that as an insult, you really are on the safer side of the line).
Now I see, by way of Kathleen Parker's column, that Michelle has told the press that Obama "is all snore-y and stinky in the morning".
What a classy lady.
Can't she go into more detail to make her husband look even sillier?
He could probably cut her loose pretty easily - she can go back to her affirmative-action sinecure and maintain her lifestyle that way.
I can't understand for the life of me why he wants to hear this nag machine running full-stop in the background.
well, unmarried single candidates, are thought as being unable to cope with politics.
Notice a lot of them are married, with kids, they will say it helps them run the country, they can multitask because they have children. But i say the single unmarried, unchilded, can make the harder decisions for the good of everyone not just a particular group. Now this is my opinion and should only be taken as such.
Jeff, you try telling women what they are saying is wrong and sexist, and tell me then what wimps men are.
Thom: I'm really going to miss Laura Bush. Regardless of politics, she's a class act.
I used to hang out on a message board and there was this one woman who was really progressive in her views and she was also a fan of Laura Bush.
This topic reminds me of a conversation I had with my parents while watching an episode of Survivor recently. There was a woman on there who was not doing any work and she was whining about not getting what she demanded. My mom said she wasn't sure if she could do well on the show. I told her that she does a lot of work at home and if she just did her part and didn't whine that she would be fine on the show. Then my dad said that nobody likes to hear bitching from men or women, at home or at work.
Love me like a reptile is being satirical.
I second this point, tmink. His point is what would it be like if he was given the same soft treatment that women often get.
Qazi,
While all of that was interesting, how is it relevant to the Obamas? Did you notice that you duplicated the information?
Helen: I think you should delete Qazi's posts.
fgfm: Alan Keyes thought the same thing when people laughed at his TV show.
Did you watch his show? I had no idea he ever had one, but I don't know much about the guy. Another black conservative who had a short lived talk show is Larry Elder. I guess there weren't enough equity feminists at home to watch. Back in January I decided I was going to read all of the candidates' websites to decide who I liked the best, but after attempting to read Keyes's views I gave up on the idea!
Having heard the hatred and bigotry spewed from Michelle Obama's pastor, I have no doubt that she hates men. Especially white or Jewish men. She comes from a hate group that disguises itself as a church.
Trey
You know, Michelle Obama, I could have been a bit more concise about this.
"What I notice about men, all men, is that their order is me, my family, God is in there somewhere, but me is first. ... And, for women, me is fourth, and that's not healthy." This is not a radical observation: Get a half-dozen gals together with a few bottles of Beaujolais, and a similar theme will eventually emerge. (Trust me on this.) [Bolding mine.] And you no doubt, like several other people, raised an eyebrow at it.
