Short answer, Comics became for 40 something adults, limited runs, expensive (over $6) and "grim and gritty" by pampered writers working from other genres, such as Joss Whedon.
It's a niche bit paid for by Time-Warner at DC (they own DC, it's a sandbox that makes no money whatsoever) and Marvel (make all their money, no kidding comics publishing accounts for 15% of revenue) from licensing to movies and toys.
You'll note that the last popular characters created were the X-Men and various other Marvel types (Punisher, late Seventies). Nothing new for more than thirty years.
I happen to know that they've all gone to Patterson, NJ.
I think whiskey has a point. Comics are old hat. The 'graphic novel' gave us comics as high art with a high price tag. We also get to deal with their turgid offspring, movies like Sin City and 300. Do kids read comics anymore? Can they afford to?

Heros are too unilateral for nuanced appreciation.
My all-time favorite superhero is the RKO serialized Captain Marvel. While battling two bad guys on a roof, he picked one up and threw him over.
Not all. Then he leaned over the wall to watch and laughed when he hit.
Gotta love a guy who enjoys his work so much.
I've been here all along. But I can't fly.

A creative failure on all levels.

Good article and I think The Incredibles does a good job on this topic.
