Podcast with Mark Warner

We interview Mark Warner, the former governor of Virginia and an ex-potential Democratic candidate for President. Mr.Warner talks with us about why he decided not to run for President in 2008, why any sane person would want to be President, why he reaches out to the Daily Kos crowd, and what one thing he would change about our current political system if he could.

There is also a surprise guest who calls in. Hint, he is a great "humanitarian" who criticizes Israel and American foreign policy and has been referred to as our worst ex-President.

You can listen to the podcast right here or for dial-up users, click here. Archives of our previous podcasts can be downloaded at GlennandHelenShow.com. And you can do what the cool kids do and subscribe via iTunes.

Jerome,

Glenn and I just thought it was hilarious that Carter came on right as Glenn mentioned his name! Talk about synchronicity.

Yes, everyone says I look like Andie McDowell. Glenn and I would love to find Ms. McDowell (she lives in Ashville, North Carolina) and do a video podcast with her just to see if we really look alike. I would be honored to look anything like her.

I wish folks were capable of talking about alternative energy without pushing the sacrifice/hair shirt angle of things. This reminds me of the guys who are horrified at hybrid SUVs because it's not enough to have an improvement, you have to go to the most extreme possible option. It's a real shame because despite the overselling of certain options there's a real case to be made for things like plug in hybrids with nuclear energy for the plug in part.

But as for the much more important part - I agree about the Andie McDowell thing. I've described Helen as a "more attractive Andie McDowell" myself.

I think the Dems are missing an opportunity by turning more to candidates like Hillary! than to rational candidates in the mould of Gov. Warner. I probably still wouldn't vote for him -- see the recent discussion throughout the b'sphere about the "Libertarian Democrat" canard to see why not -- but I think that there's currently enough disaffection with Republicans that they would have trouble reacting to someone like Warner.

Dr. Helen:

You can tell that lucky guy, Glenn, for me ...

... that you are Wayyyy better looking than Andie McDowel

... Smarter

... More fun

... better sense of humor

... compared to the Act-tressss, have led a very productive life (at least up till now, I don't know about this podcast gig with Dr. Law)

... AND If you outlive Dr. Law, you will have suitors lined up down the block and around the corner. (yeah yeah I know the instadaughter would have to approve)

Because you've got what it takes ...

Staying power that is --- great skin (no wrinkles showing up to now at least)

PS --

How a fascinating woman like you could EVER fall for a guy who "liked Jimmy Carter in his sweater" "liked the malaise speech" "but was too young to vote at the time"

Sheesh !

Fortunately Dr. Law has some good ideas on Gun Owner rights ...

... He must be the last of the red hot lovers ...

... otherwise I don't get it.

Gov. Warner sounds like a nice guy, but he's way too enamored with the idea of government programs. And it bothers me his idea that the country is fundamentally broken.

That's noy fair to Carter to call him the worst ex-President.

He's the worst LIVING ex-President. Pierce and Buchanan were even worse.

Just to keep things straight.

You do. I meant to mention it when I first dropped in and saw your pic, but didn't want to give the Moonbats any ammo [this was during the broo-ha where the "feminist" prouldy arched for Clinton]

Whatever. Carter lacked political acumen. No argument here. But he WAS the only guy, like, ever, to get the Israel Jews and the Egyptians to make a stab at getting along (not in the usual way, I mean). And almost won something on this point. As for "malaise", it was about on the level of "buy a pair of socks."

Poorly stated but on the money.

I know about this sort of thing.

Carter was never a delusional hallucinogenic chimp-lover and he wasn't just a peanut farmer, he was a peanut scientist. On a nuc sub, no less.

And he thought it might be nice to try to use his retirement to help build houses for poor people & try his hand, as best he good, at feelance ambassadorship.

He's also been called The Best Ex-President.

Not the best president, of course. What, you think I talk to my monkey or something?

I hope that was sarcasm...

Carter would have been the best ex-president if he had stuck to building houses for the poor. I admired that.

Every action since then has been a pathetic joke, sometimes bordering on treason.

Helen -

Although Mark Warner seems to be an honorable guy, I wish you all could have put a bit more pressure on him when he said that President Bush failed to challenge the country after 9/11. He brought up several things that were seemingly unrelated to the actual challenge. But more specifically, I would have asked him if bringing democracy and global integration to one fourth of the world's population was not a significant challenge. Frankly, I think it is, and it is his party that denies that this is in fact the challenge. His suggestions seemed analogous to asking Detroit to provide automatic transmissions to all Americans after Pearl Harbor!

I agree, thanks for the suggestions. We try to let people talk but at times, it is also reasonable to get them to clarify their issues. I tried to get more specific information but I also felt that the issues he discussed after 9/11 had little or nothing to do with how to handle the aftermath of such a tragedy.
