Early Voting

Well, I just finished with early voting and the turnout looked very promising. The poll workers in Knoxville said the turn out was "like that of a presidential election." That is good news, I hope. As for my votes, they went to three Republicans and one Democrat in the race for Senate (Harold Ford-D vs. Bob Corker-R), Governor (Phil Bredesen-D vs. Jim Bryson-R), State Representative (Stacy Campfield-R vs. Schree Pettigrew-D) and Congressman (John Duncan-R vs. John Greene-D). Can you guess who I voted for in the Senate race? Hint: He might support a bill to require states to recognize each other's gun permits. Who are other people voting for in the Tennessee election, or any other?

I am doing something I have never done before: voting a straight Republican ticket. (Now I certainly do not know if all the republicans are heterosexual, nor do I care. Just in case some of the, well, more interesting posters take the phrase out of context.)

I have usually found some crossover in my voting. When I was more likely to vote Democratic, I would usually find a Republican or two I found a better choice. Last election here in Tennessee, I voted for Bredesen for Governor and Cooper for Representative because I like the way they work and vote on issues despite voting for the President and other Republicans.

But I have had it. The Foley scandal pushed me over the edge. Again for the record, what he did was abhorrent and I hope he is prosecuted as soon as he gets back from rehab. And I hope they get the lying pervert priest who perped Foley. But I believe that Democrats sat on the information for MONTHS without reporting it. That is scummy, repulsive, morally and spiritually indefensible, and I will not tolerate it. Here in Tennessee, it is against the law. So I am voting all Republican for the first, and perhaps last time in my life.

If Hastert knew, he needs to go to jail. If Kos knew, I hope they put them in the same cell. I have seen too many lives damaged by sexual abuse to tolerate any bullshit in this area.

WOW. I did not realize how angry I am about that till I wrote this. I may have to vote twice.

Heh.

I'll probably vote straight Republican also. But first, here in Ohio, we have to figure out how to rig the election and not be detected by those "monitoring" us. It's not an easy job but somebody has to do it.

I think you voted Democratic for Bredesen and - since you state you only voted for one Democrat - for Republicans Corker, Campfield, and Duncan.

However, maybe I'm just projecting because that's how I would have voted if I lived in Tennessee.

Dadvocate, my father went to Ohio last year from Maryland on behalf of the Republican party to "monitor" elections. All sorts of groups monitor elections to ensure the results they desire.

DRJ,

Well, then we must have the same voting style, that is exactly how I voted. I admire Campfield for standing up to the black political caucus even though it was not in his best political interests to do so. I like Bredesen because of his stand on TennCare and he is a moderate Democrat, Corker for gun rights and national security and Duncan because he is a bit libertarian leaning. However, I can live with other outcomes from the choices I made.

cham - We don't need no dadburn liberal Marylanders lookin' over our shoulders while we vote. :-)

BTW - I visited you blog the other day. You have some great pix of the mountains. Growing up 30 miles from the Smoky Mountians, I used to whitewater kayak and still hike and camp.

Given that Bob Corker had no clue about this issue and refused to answer how he feels in regards to supporting a bill to require states to recognize each other's gun permits (see Say Uncle's post on his interview), I guess you voted for Harold Ford.

I think you made the right decision. I'll probably vote 75% Republican also, but Ford will get my vote. The guy is an ideas machine, while Corker will just be a party lemming.

So true, Dr. Helen. If there's one thing all Americans need to remember, it's how to live with and sometimes even support elected officials for whom they did not vote.

I voted absentee 10 days ago. A bit of running around as the county clerk wasn't quite in the swing of things this early in the season.

Drj, you are so correct. I have been offended by bumper stickers on both sides of the cars that infer that the driver does not acknowledge the president chosen by our Constitutional process. The ones that spring to mind include "Charleston Heston is my president." Damn I hated that. If he is elected, Harold Ford Junior will be one of my senators. While I do not appreciate his voting record, I will be proud to have an erudite African American as my senator. I will email his office with polite complaints regularly, but he will indeed be my senator.

I'm voting for Kinky Friedman for governor of Texas. Yep, its a "disgusted with all of you" vote and I'd side with the incumbent Perry if I was casting the deciding vote.

If you want bizarro world try living in the TX 14th Congressional District. The incumbent Repub is Ron Paul, a staunch libertarian who has opposed the Iraq action from day one and still favors immediate withdrawal. The Dem is a conservative rancher, Shane Sklar, who basically backs the Prez on the war effort. As much as the thought of Speaker Pelosi scares me, I have to go Democrat on this one.

I also did early voting and I thought it was both safe and easy. For US Senate I voted for the Constitution party, but I think I voted Republican for everything else.
