Carnival of the Insanities

The Carnival of the Insanities is up at Dr. Sanity's blog. Check out this post at the Thespis Journal Blog on the new Teacher Preparation Plan at Columbia University. As if assaulting their speakers isn't enough for Columbia University's vision of tolerance, now they will be assaulting our school children with their alumni's leftist political agenda. I hope at least a few of the student teachers at Columbia have a good set of earplugs; I know I would be purchasing a truckload before attending such a program.

Any wonder that so many parents are homeschooling?

At least my kids don't get exposed to this kind of bilge until they reach college, when they are ready for it. (My middle son, who is now in college, has some really inventive ways of rebelling against political correctness without making his profs realize that is what he is doing.)

My wife recently met with my daughter's English teacher to try to understand how her grade dropped from an A to a C+ in two weeks. Knowing my wife, she was probably suspicious of the teacher, but would have at least started with the approach of "What is our daughter doing or not doing that we need to help correct?"

Turns out the teacher in question has been teaching for just two years; has publicly spoken against special education for gifted students (our daughter is gifted); and, in particular, is opposed to the publication of books written by children, because it might give them an "overinflated sense of their own abilities."

My daughter is a sufficiently gifted writer that a literary agent has already begun working with her to publish her writings. (Okay, so that seems a bit strange to me, too; but apparently there is a market for books written by children for children.) My daughter's teacher had her class write essays on what their goals in life were, and my daughter naturally listed "being published by age 13" as her biggest goal. She didn't realize she was pressing a big red button.

I told my wife that it sounds like this teacher has adopted a particularly repulsive philosophy of anti-elitism. Now I'm going to have to ask my wife if the teacher is a graduate of Columbia, because that would explain a lot.

You know the line: "Everyone is special ... meaning no one is."

As someone currently in an Education graduate program, I can say from experience that the leftist agenda is quite obvious throughout the faculty. Most of the faculty are leftists, but they vary from not making it obvious to spending entire courses repeating leftist talking points.

Ironically, the ones who spend entire courses attempting to indoctrinate students often get the best teaching evaluations, but not for the reasons they think. They get the best teaching evaluations simply because they expect the least out of their students. I had one professor that fit this mold, and I received an 'A' in the class just by showing up despite the fact that I quit doing any work for the class about half-way through when I realized it wasn't necessary.

Anyway, I don't worry too much about actual teachers being indoctrinated because it's been my experience that most of them don't really care about the "philosophy of education" stuff (which is often just leftist tripe disguised as educational philosophy). They (admirably) just want to get into the class and teach.

What's more troubling is the time that this stuff wastes. Teachers could be off learning skills and content that could be useful in teaching, but instead they sit through classes where the professors spend the entire time discussing (and complaining about) current political issues.

Also, the focus on diversity is almost comical here, considering that the vast majority of students are white women. If they wanted diversity, they should try to recruit men, but I'm guessing that that is not quite the kind of diversity they have in mind.

#13 shows us that leftists don't really care about gays and are just using them for political gain. Too bad more gays haven't noticed.
