If "all men are pigs," why is a pig's life worth more than a man's?

It's interesting that a woman is facing 50 years in prison for decapitating her boyfriend's piglet but if she killed him, she would probably face a lot less, with an average prison sentence of about six years. When a man's life is worth less than a pig's, it tells you something pretty sinister about our society.

At least the woman is facing something....if she had killed him, she would face no jail at all...she would just make a claim of dv or abuse and walk away scott free. Yeah, pigs are definitely valued more than men.....this is the american version of sharia where a man is worth less than a pig.

Geez. She faces 50 years in prison. Doesn't mean she'll get 50 years.

Well, it is hard to say that you killed the pig in self defense as it slept and have a judge or jury believe you.

Yes, it does; however, this isn't really news. Michael Vick served nineteen months (of a twenty-three-month sentence) for running dog fights, and also missed two years of playing in the NFL. Ray Lewis, on the other hand, was charged with murder, agreed to testify against other defendants and be convicted only of obstruction of justice, received a sentence of twelve months' probation (the maximum sentence allowed by the applicable statute), never missed a game as a result of the conviction (he has missed games for other reasons), and will almost certainly be in the NFL Hall of Fame.

It's hard to know where to begin, when the jokes write themselves. Imagine years ago when some credibility-free hack breathlessly stammered on about, "Well look out, next thing you know [insert hyperbolic bad situation here]!" More and more, it's not only hard to come up with something more hyperbolic than reality, it's easy to find examples in which the alarmists were actually right.

Really. Every time I think I've imagined a most extreme scenario, reality runs right past me.

Hello Dr Helen,

I am longtime reader and lurker of your blog. I have a burning question for you and that is; why are white males in aggregate not attracted to black women?? I am a slim (5’4 120pounds, 21 years old) African woman. People tell me that I am attractive and that I favor Naomi Campbell. I attract all sorts of men but never white males. Even the liberal white males don’t approach me. I tend to wear my hair in a long afro hair style do you think this can be apart of the problem. Do yo suggest that I seek out older white men?? Please let me know. Sorry for all of the questions.

@unwrittendiiva:

I have no idea if white males are underrepresented in the attracted-to-smokin-hawt-black-chicks demographic, but the subject intrigues me immeasurably. OT: Naomi Campbell is no big deal. Vanessa Williams is.

If you would like to investigate this social phenomena (I never know the Latin plural/singular) more deeply, please see another female blog called "Neecy's Nest."

It's Wordpress, so you'll feel right at home.

I would, however, advise you to dump the "long afro style." Afro is so 70s. The only things from the 70s that were good were the films of William Friedkin, and Led Zeppelin.

Pretty much everything else sucked underwater on wheat toast.

I hope this has been a help to you.

Zorro Primo,

Thanks for the comment and I will not be dumping me afro hairstyle as it the natural state of my hair. Vanessa Williams is a biracial woman. Biracial women and black women belong in separate categories. Not to be mean but last time I checked Naomi Campbell is one of the most famous supermodels in the world. She is 40 and still looks young. This can’t be said about half of the supermodels.
I will definitely check out Neecy’s Nest!

@Unwrittendiva - Are you sure you attract Asians? I can't imagine Asians being attracted to a black woman knowing their preference for fairness over everything else(figure etc etc). By Asian, I mean anything from Asia other than Thai, Filipino and Bangladeshi(namely Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Japanese, Korean)

I read the article just now. Somehow, she has not been charged with domestic violence which this is a clear case of. If a guy had killed his gf's pet to take revenge on her for breaking up, he would definitely be charged with DV. Once again, american sharia with its double standards at work

@Unwrittendiva, I know several lovely black women who have white husbands. Maybe you're just looking in the wrong places? All the interracial families I know have one thing in common that may make it easier for them to get past racial difficulties: they're deeply religious. Maybe you'd find more tolerant and available white men in church. :0)

@unwrittendiva. A thought, perhaps unwelcome: does your cyberhandle, diva, indicate one possible reason why you might not be attracting the kind of man you want?

Love God and Love your neighbor. Who is your neighbor? Your neighbor is a person. Your neighbor may be a jerk, so you cannot love him or her. You can still respect that person as a person. What value has a person? That question is a measure of a society's health.

The answer is to raise the punishment for killing an innocent man, not to lessen the punishment for killing a non-human animal.
