Mark Steyn on Obama: "His principal interest in the rest of the planet is that he doesn’t need some nutjob nuking Cleveland before he’s finished reducing it to a moribund socialist swamp."

Dear Helen--
the problem with blowhards such as Mark is that they sit on the sidelines, writers not in positons of authority, and belittle leaders such as Obama when he address the UN.

Tell us, Mark: are you ready to come out and tell us we should attack Iran, now? or just sit back and take verbal shots at our elected officials?
Shit or get off the pot!
What would you do?

If that was a "verbal shot from someone on the sidelines not in a position of authority," then I guess what Bush got from your side of the aisle was "verbal nukes from people on the sidelines not in a position of authority."

Mark Steyn has demonstrated numerous times that he has far more understanding of political situations than spoiled, inexperienced, wealthy politicians like Obama. Also, he shows more respect for him than the left showed George W. Bush during (and after!) his presidency.

Obama had disrespected his predecessor more times 8 minutes after his inauguration than Bush had 8 years after his.

Steyn knows what he's talking about. Obama is a dangerous combination of being very intelligent, articulate, persuasive, naive and wrong.

Almost by definition, leftists are more interested in struggle against internal political enemies (within their own nations) than they are with any threats from outside.

If Stalin had been less concerned with the often-imaginary threats from other members of the Soviet Communist Party, and more concerned about the very real threat from Nazi Germany, millions of Russian lives could have been saved.

Obama even got it wrong about how long he'd been President when he made the speech. He'd been President for two days more than eight months, not for nine months. Not an important mistake by itself, but symptomatic, I think, of his cavalier disregard for facts.

Cute little sequel to the chicken-hawk fallacy. I guess you would also discount writers like Alexis Tocqueville and Mark Twain? Or, by your own standards, yourself?

Tell us, Mark: are you ready to come out and tell us we should attack Iran, now?

A physician can diagnose a disease without knowing what cure to proscribe.

And its telling that you can't even abide by the standard you would hold Steyn to. Else, whats YOUR solution? Just going to sit there and throw cheap shots at Steyn? Echo?

well, if chavez keeps helping iran we are going to have a problem on our hands sooner or later...because as much as we adhere to diplomatic terminology and process, these people can calmly and openly threaten us any time they want.

I agree with half of what you wrote. Yes, Obama is naive and wrong. However, I've yet to see any real evidence that he is very intelligent. For that matter, take away his teleprompter and he almost makes George W. Bush sound articulate.

Larry J is right on the target. There is no extraordinary intelligence in Obama. He is just barely above average, although he things he is a genius and has been told so repeatedly.

I think Steyn's perspective is wrong, however. Obama is very much interested in the rest of the world. He sees himself as emperor of the whole world, and as such he has to have at least a minimal interest in the rest of the world until he achieves that status. Then he will probably consider it all beneath him (literally).

EMP. Just one hit. America paralyzed for years.

With the added benefit of all Aircraft carriers being recalled to support rescue ops, water filtration, power distrib, etc. People really don't appreciate how the American fleet maintains peace and order throughout the world.

If some nut is intent on nuking Cleveland, I'd like to put in a request that he aim it toward the Browns' front office.

Steyn is plying his trade, no different than Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly or Al Franken. When we agree with their observations, we call them intuitive and intelligent. When we disagree, we call them posturing ignoramuses who dilute intelligent conversation.

They're pundits. It's their job to make pithy, repeatable comments on the affairs of the day. It's how they sell books.

Intelligent, serious books about the affairs of the day barely have a justifiable demographic to get published. Remember "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking? Tell me most people didn't just buy that to leave on their coffee table so their guests would think they're smart and I'll laugh in your face.

I like Steyn, if for no other reason than it's trendy to think there's at least one right-wing person in the whole of Canada.

Dr.D is dead-on-the-money. Obama, like most liberals (dare I say all?), is motivated out of a sense of self-importance and self-absorption. He will happily do something stupid if, in the eyes of the world, it makes him look like a great statesman.

He learned well from Al Gore. An Oscar and Nobel Prize for perpetrating one of the most hysterically unjustified lies since the equally-applauded Piltdown Man.

And so Obama will likewise pursue his stature in the eyes of the world, apologizing for America (reaping all that luscious anti-American sentiment, which is nothing but the product of the foreign state-run media) and doing everything he can to weaken our defenses. And when we're attacked, he'll blame the right wing for pissing off our enemies, and the children of Hollywood will cheer him yet again.

Why should I care if some hutjob nukes Washington, D.C.? Those meatheads have put my children's lives in the hands of profit seeking insurance adjusters.
