Is beachgoing becoming obsolete?

I'm at a conference at the beach in Florida. I just read at Ann Althouse's blog that people aren't going to the beach as much this year. But this place seems fairly busy so I'm not seeing much evidence of that.

We spent a week in July at Seabrook Island SC with extended family. It appeared busier than usual to us - lots of families there with kids (we go every summer).

My extended family meets at the beach just about every summer, although occasionally we head to the mountains. This summer was no different (Emerald Isle, NC). Plenty of people and very few unrented houses, although it wasn't sold out. I think it's much easier to attribute any reduction in beach attendance on the economy than on any kind of global climate effect.

With the economy in the forefront of everyone's mind and in the news; It should come as no surprise that other "crisis" need to drum up some press, facts notwithstanding.

No doubt, terrorism, high abortion rates, teen pregnancy and capital punishment are all lining up for a piece of the "low beach attendance" press pie.

Mostly not true at all. Fewer people? the economy. Those there? happier to have more space.

Seems the more obvious answer is that the economy has put the breaks on expensive vacations.

Having said that, going to Cancun for where I live is no more expensive than Florida or the east coast at all and a whole lot nicer. Going to Cabo San Lucas is even cheaper.

At the same time, over the last two decades there has been an explosion of other entertainment choices.
