"Hey, Mr. President, leave those kids alone! "

Cliff Mason at CNBC:

You can't teach American kids civics by forcing them to do community service work. We're stubborn, in fact, that's our singular national virtue. For a guy who spends so much time decrying cynicism, he sure seems to be pushing a program that will make the next generation even more cynical than me and my millennial buddies, and we're a tough act to follow. Call me a skeptic, but this "Ve haf vays of making you serve" program just doesn't seem like the kind of thing that encourages civic-mindedness. In general, coercion doesn't tend to produce good results.

Here's to hoping that "national service" itself was a cynical ploy on Obama's part and he'll forget all about once he takes office. Hey, Mr. President, leave those kids alone!

I believe that if you check out this
http://philanthropy.com/news/updates/5674/presidential-candidates-support-expanded-national-service-programs
you will find that Obama does not call for a mandatory program for all young people and that McCain calls for a similar program but is a bit less detailed on what he wants.

In sum: don't attack Obama for what he is not asking for.

Fred, you are a shill. You were involved in the same discussion on Althouse saying the same thing and people corrected you over there. So you came over here after being chastised over there.

The fact is that the original page did indeed say that the service would be mandatory! You can look up the original page on the internet if you are interested in the truth. But you will not. Becasue you are an appologist.

You are busted dude. And Mr. thin skin, nobody attacked anyone. Remember how you guys told us that dissent is a form of patriotism? Goose, meet gander.

Oh, sorry, I am busting you the exact same way I did over at Althouse. You already know this information, because you already read the post over there. You are the one being dishonest.

Projection, look it up. Perhaps you will learn something and grow up a bit.

If you want to hang around and contribute honest posts, hang around. Otherwise, go back to Kos or wherever you came from. Nobody here tolerates the kind of crap you are trying to pull.

Fred,

Yet, he did call for a mandatory program on his website, hence the use of the word "required" though they did take it down.

Also in the article you point out, McCain states:

But Senator McCain, the Republican contender, said he was wary about too much government involvement.

“I want to be careful about expanding when my philosophy is, Let’s not have government do things that the private sector can do,” he said during a forum on public service here that was organized by ServiceNation, a coalition of nonprofit groups and corporations."

I wouldn't be happy if McCain required mandatory service either, though from what he stated,he is at least wary of too much government involvement. Obama sees government as the solution to every problem when indeed, it is not.

Trey,

Thanks for the info on Fred, there are so many of these Obama defenders going around the internet trolling sites. I guess they feel they have to defend their God or some bad news might leak out about him. It's too late. There are about 58 million of us who knew he was bad news from the start--and no internet troll will keep us from speaking up.

You are quite welcome, I just got lucky!

I am fascinated by how much projection these types engage in. Whatever weird thing they accuse us of, if it does not fit, I now just accept that it is what they are doing.

LOL -- (ps. it's a joke on the theme; not a personal attack against "fred".)

Not to be a poo poo head, fred, but it doesn't matter one little particle what McCain thinks about community service now, anyway. It's Obama's dreams you have to live with.

Get your rotation cut short fred, you've already flunked out. It's back to waiting tables for you.

Blog shilling is community service?

Ed Cline has some good commentary on history, the Constitution, and Obama's call to service here: http://ruleofreason.blogspot.com/2008/11/of-subversion-subservience-and.htm

Whether you agree with him or not, Mr. Cline does give good reasons for what he says, gives evidence for his claims, provides references and citations, and respects the rules of reason and argumentation.

None of which I find practiced honestly and on principle in the media or modern politics.

This proposal could provide some real entertainment in an otherwise depressing year.

Any 'mandatory volunteerism' program is going to be challenged on 13th amendment grounds as a form of involuntary servitude. I can hardly wait to see the first black president's Solicitor General arguing before the Supreme Court for the watering down of the amendment that ended slavery in the US.

What is the "Office of the President Elect"? I've never heard of that. Must be part of the change. I've never seen it either, just a sign on a podium.

Is it just me, or in the photo of his chosen group so far, did I not see any black or hispanic members?
Maybe they were just out of the frame in the picture I saw?

I certainly hope the left can take what it has dished out over the last 8 years. I, for one, plan on having a field day.

Hey pal, you are a thinker, not a stinker! You do not need to get hysterical and accuse the left of crap, you will use reason and humor to slay them. You will appeal to logic and data, cause that is the kind of guy you are.

I know they have been acting foolish, like hysterical drama queens for the last 8 years, but I think our best bet is to show them, and the middle, the better way. Let's keep our heads and civility, and be devastating but emotionally balanced critics.

The data will take care of the rest.

McCain: “I want to be careful about expanding when my philosophy is, Let’s not have government do things that the private sector can do”

Last night I read on a news ticker that Speaker Pelosi is now seeking to expand the bailout to include the auto industry.

What's next?

Not, it's on Fox News they are talking about a credit card bailout.

If we keep on this road, next thing you know it will be a universal bailout. All our checks will go to Washington, and we'll just get gas, groceries, clothes, all our wants for "free." Think I'm kidding? I wish I was.

Trey - I disagree. I think we have to be more batshit insane then the left to win back the Congress and White House. That formula worked for the left, so let's just ratchet up the insanity. When the left gets wind of it they'll have to get even more insane and this nation can spiral completely out of control - which is just what I want.

@alex: batshit insane

Difference is that if the right is batshit insane the press calls them on it and they lose their base. (Hell, if the right isn't batshit insane, the press still tries to make them look it.) If the left is batshit insane, it motivates their base.

Hopefully, I am through my loony tunes at this time. I did fly off the handle over this, privately for the most part. I shared my disgust and fears and anger with a few people whose opinion I trust, even seek out, who know who they are. I got re-assured by some, chastised by some, and both by others.

Trust, you too are correct. Thank you. I did not mean to sound as if I were going ballistic.

Farrakhan and Pelosi both have words of wisdom in the news today.
With that passing as wisdom, who needs Seinfeld re-runs?

One can google "defunct american car manufacturers" and be amazed by how many there were through time. Imagine if we bailed them all out.

I am still guffawing over "Office of the President Elect".

@br549

I never thought you were going ballistic.

Similarly, did you hear the Washington Post issued an apology for their pro-Obama bias? There were more negative stories for McCain by a nearly 3-1 margin, and more positive opinion pieces for Obama by a 2-1 margin.

My response is this: Nice of them to apologize 4 days after the election. May have been nice to do it a week ago.

Evidently, a long line of people paid to canvass for Obama, the "Voter Corps" or whatever, are getting partially "stiffed". Pay attention waiters and waitresses across America!
The canvassers are to have been paid roughly $10 an hour, best I can tell.
They are being paid with pre-paid Visa cards. Except, they are getting paid less than half to approximately 2/3 of the money they are owed.
One woman in (a line of about 375 people, I believe) is said to have expressed "I want my money today. It's my money. I want it right now."

One can go to Rachel Lucas' web set and from there link to the newspaper article on the subject.

It's already getting fun.
