Spin Sisters
Jeri Thompson talks to John Hawkins about the (mal) treatment of conservative women by the media:
No, I doubt you could. Libertarian and conservative women are treated with disdain (if they are interviewed at all) by the liberal media, including what are supposed to be "women's" magazines. Myrna Blyth, ex-editor of Ladies' Home Journal in her book Spin Sisters "bashes the Left on grounds that the Spin Sisters (her name for the female media elite) need women to think of themselves as victims if they are going to look for help from a liberal government." Naturally, these magazines emphasize how women are supposed to vote for Democrats (preferably women!) to save the day with "free" government programs that nurture, build self-esteem and promote dependency. No way are they going to give positive press to women like Jeri and other outsiders who don't march in line with the rest of the "good girls." Perhaps the "feminist" slogan "well-behaved women rarely make history" should be changed to "only well-behaved women make the cover of Vogue."
What I think is probably of more interest to some of your readers is the fact that conservative women get such a different treatment in the press, including the women's press, than the Democrats.
For goodness sake, Hillary has been on the cover of most women's magazines and had glowing reports on everything she has ever touched. Michelle Obama actually could stand up in an Annie Leibovitz spread in Vogue magazine with her finger pointed at her husband's campaign manager, telling him what to do in the caption, and I don't think that Cindy, or Judith, or I, could get away with such a thing.

Funny about the "must be victims, all" mindset: these same people want respect. You can't have both. As someone wiser than myself once said, "People don't respect victims. They do things for them, but they don't respect them."
peregrine john wrote, "Funny about the "must be victims, all" mindset: these same people want respect. You can't have both."
True. It's also rather peculiar that liberal women see themselves as victims, but they also see themselves as saviors of the sisterhood. The intellectual contradictions of the modern woman abound, especially with liberal women.
Conservative women are often better than their liberal counterparts on this point of consistency.
And there's the rub. If you are aiming to promulgate those feminine contradictions as THE GOOD, then you need Sex and the City girls, with all their attendant inner conflicts.
A conservative woman, intellectually consistent and appreciative of the opposite sex, is the ultimate threat to the female establishment. A conservative woman LIKES MEN. She even values their masculine virtues. Hell, a conservative woman might even thank them once in a while.
And that's one thing the liberal girlie mag editors can't stand for. Women are supposed to dress for other women, act socially for other women, and do absolutely nothing for men. Most especially, they mustn't LIKE men.
Conservative women are so much more likable, and interesting, and more intelligent by way of consistency. It's obvious in everyday conversations and in magazine writing, too.
That's galling to liberal, Sex and the City, girls.
Jeff,
For the most part, I agree with you. But I do have to add that Cosmopolitan magazine seems to trying--it seems to be for women who like men for the most part. I just recently saw an article in this month's issue on how to treat your guy right if you make more money than he does. The tips were good ones. There was also an issue with an article on how not to male bash that I wrote about here:

Dr. Helen,
Thanks for the link. I've already forwarded it to some of my friends.
Crike. Cosmo is the last place I expected to find that little bit of sanity. It's great news to me!
I'll pick up a few issues and see what the editors are up to.
"True. It's also rather peculiar that liberal women see themselves as victims, but they also see themselves as saviors of the sisterhood. The intellectual contradictions of the modern woman abound, especially with liberal women."
What contradictions? It's all about manipulating society in general and men in particular. Logical consistency is not necessary to accomplish that goal...sometimes.
I suspect that conservative women are "better" than liberal women because (1) conservative women are more likely than liberal women to believe that men will detect egregious attempts at social manipulation, (2) conservative women are more likely to believe that men can and will object to these attempts and/or avoid the women, particularly if the manipulation is in the form of punishment and (3) conservative women are more likely to believe that their lives are improved by having a close relationship with a man.
It'll be interesting when women wake up one day and find out that, because they've overplayed their hands for years, they have created a large number of highly alienated men, men who expect to be attacked by women, if not now, then certainly later.
I find conservative women to be more tolerant. The liberal feminist I know think the entire world should mold itself into what they think it should be.
The conservative women tolerate the differences more.
As a conservative woman, I'm impressed with how well you guys have articulated some differences between conservative and liberal women. I'm not sure I could have done quite as well; okay, I probably could, possibly stated a little differently, but it's kinda neat to read these comments from men. Makes me downright proud to be a conservative woman! :o)
Unlike those liberal skanks, I refuse to be victimized. I am not a victim because I INSIST men treat me as inferior because of my sex! Try and victimize a woman who wants to be treated like crap! It totally gets me off! I mean, not in the sense that it gives me sexual pleasure... or any pleasure. I mean, totally don't worry about whether or not I'm pleased. Just. PLEASE DEAMEAN ME!! ... I mean, only if you want to, fellas.
Liberal women are such hipocrites (I hear you brothers!!!): like, "Oh, I'm just as good as a man" and "oh! I'm a woman" Hello!? Don't you see the contradiction!
I totally agree with ya, doc. There's like this female conspiracy against misogynists!!
Rachel,
Equality means neither privilege nor oppression--what I object to are liberal feminists who want legal protection from the state against men or anything else that bothers them, rather than focus on individual liberty and personal responsibility. If that is what you define as "misogyny" you need to get a clue.
Liberal and conservative spokewomen (and men) can be equally annoying.
I believe the liberal / conservative divide is ultimately a damaging thing. Any generalized statement that goes beyond basic objective fact (such as 'most conservative women have two lungs') is bound to be wrong.
I know good people on both sides of the debate; I think there are a large number of people embracing the exact contradiction Helen mentioned two (unless someone posts before me) posts up, however...
You cannot both deserve special treatment and be equal.
Would love to hear a podcast with either (Mrs.) Thompson or Blyth.
Knoxwhirled,
"Would love to hear a podcast with either (Mrs.) Thompson or Blyth."
So would I.

What do you think of Glamour? I saw one lying around, it possibly belongs to my sister or mother. There was a section on what men consider good sex and there was a section on women achieving a weight that makes them happy. Now perhaps I am misunderstanding the second part, but a woman should be happy and healthy in her ideal weight.
Interesting! Thanks again for your perspective.
