There's another aspect to this whole looks thing that I have yet to hear anyone talk about and that's the effect of the media. In real life, if a colleague or boss comes in one day not looking their best, male or female, I might note it to myself, but it would be very rare that I would comment about it to them or someone else. The most one might do is say something like "You're looking tired today..". Then you would get on with it and only pay attention to their actions and words.
But if the media gets hold of something like that for a public figure, all of a sudden it's a big issue, tongues wag for months, all the experts chime in about how shallow our culture is, or how women are expected to look good all the time. People make all these conclusions about cultural characteristics from some silly media attention on a relatively insignificant event. The media acts as an amplifier for what may be only a minor aspect of life. I don't know of anyone who thinks journalists or editors are intellectual giants that are able to ferret out subtle clues about western civilization for all the rest of us to ponder.
All of us live in the world we create, and I'm going to live in the world that I want to create, and not in the world the media or anyone else tries to push on me. In my world, it's what people do that counts, not what they say and certainly not what they look like.
Your looks are a reflection on who you are. You can tell a great deal about how a person feels about themselves and how they view the rest of the world by how they look.

The focus on looks is way overrated. That's why I love the internet, no one really cares what you look like on any given day. It's refreshing.
Books have been written (and will continue to be) about how peoples appearence sends signals to other people. Style, grooming, hygiene, etc. All useful information.
But yes, the media in particular overemphasises it. They're shallow. They ought to be reminded of that, often, because they're concieted.
