Who are DrHelen Readers?
You can see the results of the BlogAd Blog Project here. A summary of the demographics of DrHelen readers is as follows: the majority of you are between 21-55 with 32.5% between 46-55, 31% between 35-45, and 19.5% between 21-34; 74.6% male and 25.4% female, 54.5% are Suburban dwellers vs. 22% urban and the majority of readers say they have a family income of $90,000-$120,000.
You are well-educated with 38.3% having a post-graduate degree and 36.4% a college degree. 47.1% are Republican, 27% Independent, 13.2% Libertarian, and 5.4% Democrats. 85.3% are white, and the other 14.7% are non-white. 16.2% of you are computer professionals, started reading blogs in 2001 (22%) and read blogs for a better perspective(82.7%), and news you can't find elsewhere (78.8%). Sadly 51.4% of you do not listen to podcasts--come on, they are really fun.

Interesting demographics. A bit surprising, esp. the 3/1 male/female readership.
Always interesting.
Bruce Hayden,
The male/female breakdown is pretty typical. I think last year the breakdown was similar for "political" blogs, about 75% male, 25% female.
Dr H:
This was my first year in viewing podcasts, and I think that they are informative. I especially like the interviews with authors. With small children, work, and school, the podcasts provide some replacement knowledge for my lack of fun reading time.
I also believe that more research should be done to better understand why readers do not listen to podcasts. What if it is established that readers look at your blog at work and that employers frown on listening to the podcasts or block them from their workers? That would be different compared to if readers were uninterested in the podcasts or did not know how to work the technology.
Um, I for one lied through my teeth while filling that thing out...
Just so you know.
But how many of us floss?
OK, Dr. Helen, some of your readership has a serious problem with a lack of drinking alcohol. Those with a medical diagnosis are, of course, officially excused.
Anyone else who only drinks once a month or less will be tied to a chair and forced to listen to podcasts of Dennis Kucinich's policy positions.
In addition to driving those misguided souls to drink, it'll answer your plea that your readers listen to more podcasts.
Let's see, I'm over 60, make less than $90,000, by a bunch, don't often listen to podcasts (time restraint), but I am male. So one out of the summary isn't bad, is it? Oh yes, I only have a HS degree! I must have missed your survey, you think?
hkl,
Or like anonymous above, everyone just lied through their teeth.
Lied through my teeth? Guilty as charged. I understated income.
I lied.
I only floss the week before a dentist's appointment.
Point blank, I find podcasts to be a waste of bandwidth and time. Text consumes far less and I'd rather read what someone thinks. It's faster than listening to the pregnant pauses and typically shows more thought with far less showing off. Strictly my opinion. But hey, whatever floats some folks boats.
This is interesting to read. I would like to see results for some other popular blogs. Here is a long list of some things I noticed:
You have very affluent readers, 59.2% have a family income of at least $75,000.
56.6% of readers have only 1 or 2 people in their household.
You have a very educated group, 38.3% with a post-grad degree.
40.2% never attend church. 25.5% are either agnostic or atheist. I imagine most of them have some conservative beliefs. I think liberals who are in this category are annoying.
At 3.1%, your Mormon population is probably above average.
11% watch Glenn Beck and 21.1% watch Bill O'Reilly. I don't have cable, but I listen to Beck on the radio.
24.7% watch Law and Order and Fred Thompson is running for President. I heard they might take the show off the air because of this.
31.3% watch Myth Busters
55.1% have signed a petition in the last year and 72.1% have written to a politician.
20.9% do not commute to work.
72% do not have a blog
70.1% rarely see films in a theater, 48.3% rarely buy DVDs
76.5% do not make phone calls to waste time.
Only 14.5% believe in UFOs, that's probably below average.
The majority of readers never drink: gin, whiskey, scotch, rum, vodka, or tequila
"A summary of the demographics of DrHelen readers... that are willing to give up random data with NO clue where it will ultimately be used or WHO will have access to it.
You know, this will end up on your permanant record...!
I'm sure podcasts are a lot of fun, but I've never listened to them for the following reasons:
1) When I'm at work or home, I'm usually doing other things. Listening to voice takes up too much mental bandwidth. I can listen to music (helps cut down on cubicle farm noise ) fine, but I can't do talk.
2) Webpages can be read in bursts, when I'm between small tasks or waiting for something.
3) I read 200 wpm. I can inhale a webpage in a fraction of the time it'd take to listen/watch something. That's why I never watch the videos on cnn/etc of someone talking the news to me. I can read their articles in not much more time than it takes their player to launch, and definitely faster than their ads.
Side point- I think this is probably why youtube generally has a higher watch rate than cnn/etc's "watch an anchor read the news to you." Youtube videos are usually *not* able to be easily replaced by a page or few of text.
I'm sure podcasts are great for a lot of people. But, I've not yet found any compelling reason to listen to any. As above, if they had something that couldn't easily be turned into a text transcript, they might be more attractive.
I did not lie, just so you know.
I honestly expected more female participation in the mix than what showed.
About podcasts; they are usually long, even though interesting. I am on the phone and computer all day long at work, and it becomes difficult to sit at the screen in the evenings. Commenting in blogs takes a couple minutes to read and catch up, and then respond if a subject catches my fancy. I do view the occasional one, though.
As was said by another earlier, yours is the only blog questionnaire I would have taken the time to fill out, Dr. Helen.
And I didn't fib either, even about flossing.
Oh I like this age range - 21-55! I wish more forms had that instead of the much more narrow ranges that make you say, "Hey! Why am I in that 'older' group?"
I'm in the group that thinks podcasts are take too much time. I can generally read something much faster. I can more easily read part of it now and part later, etc.
I rarely listen to the radio except in the car. I don't have an iPod because I don't like wearing headphones/earbuds and don't need to be entertained every minute of the day. (I'm quite happy with my own bizarre, warped thoughts.)
I'm a decided non-fan of podcasts. They're too noisy for work and can't be heard over the noise at home, and they take too long.
Transcripts, please. Every time.
I feel the same about podcasts as others above. They take too much time compared to reading and I can't listen to them at work or at home (I'm supposed to be working at work and have other people around I have to listen to/for at home). In the car, I listen to the radio. I would listen to podcasts in the car but I don't have a way to do it and don't want to buy anything just to listen. It's also more trouble than it's worth to try to make a CD of them to play in the car and that would use up a lot of CDs.
EI
Podcasts are too time-consuming relative to their information value. They also monopolize the listener's attention in a way that text doesn't. And with a podcast it's difficult to take a break and come back later, unlike with text. Also, the ads and bumper music make the podcast experience worse because they further dilute its information value.
But to each his own. It may be that you have many more than enough listeners to justify your continued podcast production.
Wouldn't that be a summary of the demograhics people who filled out the survey form that Helen provided?
Also, how can you confirm or deny the data of an optional anonymous survey? The more anonymous something is the more people are likely to not tell the truth. The result of the survey may be more what people wish for themselves or perceive themselves to be, than what is factual.
The female readership is low with respect to male readership because, and it should be no secret, that all of us guys have a crush on Helen. And being a highly competent psychologist, as well as a beautiful woman, she knows how to play her cards.
I do listen to the podcasts and enjoy them very much, but I am jealous of Glenn. :)
I'll tell you straight up why I don't listen to podcasts:
The average speech rate in the mid atlantic region is 120-140 words per minute.
Unassisted, I can read at a liesurely pace of 400 wpm. With software assist* that eliminates the need for my eyes to scan the page, I can gradually crank it up to about 1100+/-, with full comprehension.
I'm too busy to expend 30 minutes of my day to absorb material that I can read in 9 (or 3!) minutes.
Transcript, please!
*My own design & implementation, of course. ;)
Podcasts are killer in the car. They make the time fly. Aside from The Glen and Helen Show I also like Coverville.
Trey
Oi. For religion, how come they don't ask if you are a Hindu or a Muslim? Those are major religions. For car type, they don't list a Prius. There are some right leaning people out there who drive hybrids.
Geekwitha.45 said:"I'm too busy to expend 30 minutes of my day to absorb material that I can read in 9 (or 3!) minutes. Transcript, please!"
My take exactly. I can't possibly take the time to just stare at my computer screen and LISTEN to the material. It's not even being read as quickly and concisely as a newscast--it's a dialogue/conversation and as such takes a bunch more time.
OTOH, if I were able to easily access them on long car trips, they'd be great, because it would be like talk radio only with less fluff.
It would be fun to contrast and compare your results with the overall results.
Just the stats geek in me peeking out.
Trey
Trey,
I think that blogads posts the overall information when the survey is totally done--so it will be comparable.
