Dancers for Democracy

Many of my readers have some interesting blogs that I like to visit; today I was looking at DADvocate's blog where I found this interesting post on the new restrictions being proposed to be placed on strip clubs in Ohio. It appears that a new bill (registration is required) prohibits sexually-oriented businesses from staying open between midnight and 6 a.m. and requires nude or semi-nude performers to be at least six feet away from customers on a stage at least two feet off the floor. These restrictions have brought out activist strippers who call themselves "Dancers for Democracy" to protest the bill:

TOLEDO -- They call themselves "Dancers for Democracy," and today they protested near Ohio's capitol to tell state lawmakers to "butt out" and let them do their thing. A bill being debated by the Ohio Senate would restrict nudity after midnight in exotic dance clubs and require the dancers and patrons to stay at least six feet apart. Those new rules, the dancers say, would put them out of business.

Two dozen dancers appeared Tuesday morning at a Columbus news conference wearing suits, tops and slacks, or pink T-shirts reading "Dancers for Democracy." A spokeswoman for the dancers said most of them are young women with children who use their wages to pay for college.....

The six-foot rule will cause wages to drop off dramatically and force many of the dancers into minimum wage jobs, said Charity Fickisen, a Columbus dancer and chairwoman of "Dancers for Democracy"....

According to "Dancers for Democracy," those who violate the rule could be found guilty of a first-degree misdemeanor, which the group points out is the same level of offense for negligent homicide or menacing by stalking.

Dadvocate asks a good question in his post, "Where are all the feminists?" Afterall, these women will be forced to take lower pay or make minimum wage. They have a right to make a living the way they see fit without interference from the government. I doubt Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton will taking on their cause anytime soon.

His question isn't particularly "good", just ignorant.

1) Many feminists do agitate for the freedom of strippers & other "sex workers" to practice their professions free from legal & police interference.

2) There has always been a sizable contingent of feminists who are/have been anti-porn, anti-stripping, anti-prostitution because they feel that these practices oppress and objectify women.

Dadvocate is of course free to think whatever he wants of feminists in groups 1 or 2. He could argue that group 1 is destructive to society, or that group 2 is a bunch of man-haters. But to suggest that there's some sort of "gotcha" here is just plain silly.

Also, the reason Clinton & Pelosi will not be taking on this cause, is not "because strippers give pleasure to men" (Dadvocate's reason for lack of feminist support), but ,most likely because it would piss off way more voters than it would attract. They're politicians, not tenured professors.

So where are these many who do advocate for women's right to choose?

I don't have the energy to dig up a ton of stuff since I am writing this during a too-short commercial break... so I will just direct you to this wikipedia article. If you browse the web a while, I'm sure you can find plenty more info.

"[Sex-positive feminists] argue that the patriarchy limits sexual expression and are in favor of giving people of all genders more sexual opportunities, rather than restricting sexual expression in the form of pornography (Queen, 1996)... they see sexual orientation and gender as social constructs that are heavily influenced by society."

"As anti-porn feminists broadened their criticism and activism to include not only pornography, but prostitution and sadomasochism, other feminists became concerned about the direction the movement was taking and grew more critical of anti-porn feminism. This included feminist BDSM practitioners (notably Samois), prostitutes-rights advocates, and many liberal and anti-authoritarian feminists for whom free speech, sexual freedom, and advocacy of women's agency were central concerns."

It's ok to be uninformed, I myself am relatively uninformed on many interesting topics. There just isn't enough time in the world. Then again, I don't try to "zing" people for being inconsistent or incorrect on issues I know little to nothing about. I thought the snarky "haha - gotcha hypocrites!" tone of your post was obnoxious, and Dr Helen continued in that vein (seemingly seriously). I get the impression you nurse a dislike of feminists, even though you obviously know very little about them. If I'm incorrect, then perhaps I should not form impressions from isolated blog posts.

Alex,

I don't claim to be an "expert" on feminism nor desire to be. What a waste of time that would be. I've found feminist positions on stripping, etc. contradictory to their "woman’s most basic freedoms is her right to control her own body" philosophy.

They often claim the women are being exploited. It seems to me that men are as exploited by strippers as strippers by men. Men sure give the strippers a lot of money for a little visual pleasure.

The only time I've been to a strip club was when friends took me for my bachelor party. The beer was good and cold.

"perhaps I should not form impressions from isolated blog posts." Perhaps. I generally don't discuss with friends, family, co-workers what I blog about. I prefer to joke around but can be obnoxious. But, my "pleasure" comment was strictly intended to be snarky.

question?

have you ever seen a female in a male strip club?

have you ever seen a male in female strip club?

check out the differences.

women laugh and giggle, and paw the male strippers.

men sit quietly, they dont touch, they are generally alone.

why is it right for one group to be demonised for the very same thing that the other group is applauded for.

it isnt about empowering women not anymore, its about demonising men.

men are the enemy of these kind of feminists. so anything that stops a man from enjoying himself, is fine by them, these feminists only see men as earners, and or to blame for every little thing a woman does.(unless it helps women, then women do it all themselves).

essentially they only want men as slaves, men arent entitled to any fun.

I don't frequent strip clubs, but I think men and women of age have the right to do so.

If a vote were taken, Golfing for White Married men could be banned for them on weekends. Citing it was in a child's best interest would be the pitch.

I'm kidding, but the same twisted mentality could be used for another issue.

Gotta agree with you there. I have a friend who's a stripper. What she is allowed to do is way less than what the male strippers do.

Hey Alex, I am not disagreeing that some feminists support a woman's right to exploit men sexually. Neither do I for that matter! I have referred to this brand of feminists called slut feminists. They note how people like Madonna have taken control of their sexual energy and imagery to promote thier own agenda. The whole thing makes sense to me and I accept it.

But our question is, where are these people now on this issue?

By the way, I appreciate your tone and discourse. Thanks! And sorry I did not phrase my question better, I think I sent you on an inadvertant wild goose chase. Glad you did not waste lots of time pulling up different authors writing on different subjects.

We are wondering where they are on THIS issue. Where are the press statements? Kind of like how we wonder where the more trad feminists are on the whole burka radical Islam approach to women.

When we see their silence on these issues that seem to us as relevent to their positions and world view, we get suspicious that they may not be as interested in universal women's rights as they claim and may be more interested in criticizing conservatives.

Well, that is what I wonder.

Helen:

From someone who disagrees with you the vast majority of the time, let me say, "I agree with you." There are similar restrictions here in Nashville. I'm willing to set aside all the animosity and join forces to fight this oppression. How about you?

P.S. A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

Feminism, shmeminism. Most feminist aren’t for anything, they just can’t bear to see men enjoy themselves. While I don't think there is anything empowering, per se, about shaking your bare ass in public, I would do it in a second if I could find a room full of women or men for that matter who would stuff money down my boxers and buy me expensive drinks just to hear me prattle on.
There are victims in strip clubs, fat, goofy, lonely guys who can't see naked women unless they pay for it. If they are happy and for some reason they seem to be, why monkey around with the stripper’s rice bowl?

As a fat, goofy, lonely guy who can't see naked women unless I pay for it, I resent the previous post.

Me and all the other F.G.L.G.W.C.S.N.W.U.T.P.F.I's are forming a political action committee to demand that strippers be installed in all public restrooms, airports, and places of worship.

We'll see who laughs last, Mr. Man...

Actually, many feminists speak on behalf of the rights of sex workers. Honestly, it sounds like a cause that MS. Magazine would write about.
