Good Cause of the Month

I heard through the Conservative Grapevine that Michelle Malkin is finalizing her plans to go to Iraq to do some first-hand reporting: her goals are two-fold:

1) to report on how the troops perceive mainstream media coverage of the war (with a particular focus on the wire services relying on local stringers); and

2) to report on progress and interaction between U.S. troops and Iraqi Army trainees.

Some of the commenters in a previous post seemed taken aback that I bragged about using money from Blogads to take a beach vacation. As I mentioned, the additional Blogads revenue I made to take my wonderful vacation was made possible, in part, by extra traffic from links from lefty bloggers such as Glenn Greenwald and Alicublog. (Thanks again, boys!) However, after considering that maybe the commenters were correct, that I should be giving the money to good causes and not spending it all on myself, I decided to take their advice to heart and donate some of my revenue to my favorite right-leaning causes, starting with a check I just mailed to Hot Air to help pay for Michelle's trip to Iraq--I hope they will put it towards extra security.

Perhaps every once in a while, I will find a right-leaning or libertarian cause that I believe in and send some of the proceeds from the Blogad revenues their way. It's a good feeling, knowing that I am helping to make the world a better place and that every person--trolls included--coming to this blog will help to contribute in some small way. Thanks everyone!

I notice both you and Althouse have taken to referring to the Jewish men that you disagree with as ... "boys".

Just curious why, as I thought this was a no-no slur. Or is it only slurring them if you use both words "jew boys" together?

Not trying to be provocative, but it jumped out at me when Althouse defended herself this way against Adler, Levy, Drezner and Goldberg, and now I see you doing it here against Greenwald.

Am I missing something? Have there been pc updates that make this type of offense minimal now, or is it because you are both women that this is now allowed?

You're welcome on helping finance Malkin's "fact finding" mission, btw.

Remember: it doesn't take "extra" money for people to give to causes helping soldiers (not sure if Malkin's mission really qualifies in this way).

If you have a shared sense of sacrifice, you can be contributing daily at some level predetermined by your personal budget -- save up this fund and donate it to a cause you have researched and determined can really help people there, as opposed to just giving the "leftovers" from your beach holidays and side projects to finance a project that you (and your husband) likely will link to to grow your blog.

It's good, at this late stage in the game, that you're connecting talking and putting your money where your mouth is though. I imagine lots of people think Glenn must be feeling both guilty and embarrassed for having done so much to cheerlead this administration.

Let me know when leftists show some remorse for the tens of millions killed by the men they supported, like Stalin, Ho Chi Minh, Castro, Kim Il Sung, Mao, and Che.

Funny how they lionize murderers that say the right "socially concious" stuff, and condemn those who seek to free nations from tyrants.

Good one, J. Peden: "anonyboy." That says it all.

And I am delighted that Dr. Helen is taking money made from such people and doing things that (i) she likes and (ii) they hate.

Of course, the anonyboys COULD start their own blogs and try to do something constructive. After all, they have a lot of free time to try to needle others!

Well, I don't follow the pc updates either if that is what you are implying. I don't read either Greenwald or the acliublog (which I am guessing has something to do with the ACLU?) But I do know the jewboy slur. Many people still associate the ACLU with "Jewish". I am guessing Greenwald might be and ethnically Jewish name (not sure of her religion).

Since I read neither of those blogs -- I only see you here continually taunting them as "boys". I know your whole professional promo is based on "boys" v "girls" so at first I just figured you were regressing to that kind of simplicity.

But now I'm not so sure. Why not say "kids" instead of "boys" if it's just the alleged juvenile behavior you are taunting. (and I understand such taunting, posting of personal pictures, and creating controversy helped grow other blogs that you appear to be imitating as a "woman blogger". You are positioning yourself in this special niche, not just as another blogger but as a female blogger right?

That's why I asked the question, particularly when I saw Althouse doing the same thing recently in "fighting back". I never saw anyone call you a JAP here (assuming you're ethnically Jewish from the Hannukah post).

I find it suspicious that two prominent women bloggers just suddenly latch on to the "boy" slur when involved in public online disputes with Jewish male bloggers is all. Perhaps others have read your stuff here and wondered the same thing?

Stick with "kids" the next time you want to be immature and taunt to get hits. As a woman working online also, the "boy-girl" thing seems juvenile to me and wish you ladies wouldn't use that kind of tactic for your own ends as it affects us all. As a non-Jew, I'm always unclear about how some slurs are acceptable from some, yet otherwise questionable.

Just some food for growth...

"j peden" and "eric blair" don't jump out at me as Jewish men's names. Yet their comments here surely can be classified as "immature".

Do you call them boys too, or is that only reserved for the Jewish surnames of more prominent bloggers you can benefit by feuding with?

Sometime 1 plus one adds up to 2.

Oh Helen. I realize you did not go to law school, but I thought your logic and reasoning was better. I merely observed your choice of words.

My sympathies lie with the men on this side of the dispute; you look shabby for calling them "boys", and I wondered if it was seemingly related since you don't call immature commenters "boys", yet there is a tendency to do this with Jewish men who have legitimate views that don't fall lockstep with yours.

Instead, you latch on thinking you are going to use my observations against me. Heh.

I sure hope you have a boxful of personal photos and stories to share here; your logic and intelligent discussion surely isn't going to sustain interest. How many times can you pull the "Girls rule, Boys drule" post and be expected to be taken seriously? Sure instalumpy will link still you (and probably the pajamas crew), but I don't see you earning any independent hits from those who really enjoy discussing and debating ideas for the sake of it -- often, Jewish men.

It's too bad you're so wrapped up in your woman victimhood and defensive point-scoring here that you can't see that. Enough with the "boys" label, eh?

Maybe you folks should stop doing so much reading at those anti-semitic sites then? I don't read there, so I can't respond to your charges that "boy" has no weight compared to the slurs there.

Funny how so many are jumping on here to defend you, though. I can guarantee you I'm not the first one to read the "boy" insult that way. And if you've never heard it before, good for you for your innocence.

PS. You don't generally want to insult black men by calling them "boy" either (baggage there too) or by shortening there names. If it's Michael or Randall, don't assume you can call them Mike or Randy; it's a cultural respect thing that many prefer to use their formal name, and not be "boyified" with more familiar terms. Calling Glenn Greenwald (and his little sock-puppets too!) a "boy" is more than he deserves - "child" or "cry baby" would be more apt.

You brought up some interesting questions. I particularly like that you draw a contrast between the way Helen refers to men bloggers who think differently from her as "boys," and the way she treats the boys who frequent her comments. The bloggers get derision and the commenters get respect. Go figure.

However, when you said, "How many times can you pull the 'Girls rule, Boys drule' post and be expected to be taken seriously?" you were way off the beam. Helen's theme here is not that girls rule, it is that women are bad for men. Except for her, of course. She shoots guns and uses words like "tit," so that makes her something special.

Accept responsibility for the performance of your job. Maybe the other side just had better fighters and wanted it more, plus there's always that home-team advantage. this isnt related to this post. But i've been reading through your archives and you seem to be concerned about the collective funk that american men seem to be falling into. What are your thoughts on this: http://health.yahoo.com/news/168226 . I've read accounts of people with insufficient levels of testosterone who have replacement therapy and it really seems to help them get their drive back, both sexual and otherwise.

Not neccasarily that replacement therapy is the answer, but just that the dropping testosterone levels are probably related to whats going on. It could be that there are environmental toxins damaging men. Or it could be related to the fact that men are constantly being browbeated and demeaned. I've read that testosterone can drop signifigantly when a man is fired or when he starts at a new school and is feeling uncertain about his future.

Admittedly, teenage boys probably have lots and lots of testosterone and they're still having problems. But I think the testosterone thing may well be an important part of the broader problem. Im not an endocrinologist or psychologist, i just sort of made this connection while reading through your archives.

Yes, the crazy racist with a very specific and narrow agenda will find the truth! Of course the truth you want is “Dear Leader’s wise actions have saved Iraq and the world but his enemies in the mainstream media won’t let you know because they hate America so!”

Wingnuts grasping at straws, so sad and funny all at once.

Hey miss Perfesser if you have any money left over I have a buddy in Nigeria who’s looking for clever investors such as yourself.

Ah, that's right. "Salvage" is all about sophisticated discourse. A look at his website and its continual sneers and shrieking venom makes you want to wipe the spittle off the screen.

Jeez, fella. You can still be a committed progressive leftist without being a jerk, you know. "Perfessor" and the like simply takes away from the value of any of your arguments and makes your look childish, not smart.

But hey, don't let me stop you from diluting the strength of your own arguments!

Oh dear, oh dear, I’m not being civil enough to your taste? That fills me with gallons of shame.

Actually no. Michelle Malkin is a lying racist slime and anyone who gives her anything is a supporter of lying racist slime and deserves no consideration whatsoever.

Furthermore I’m not arguing anything, there’s nothing to argue. Malkin is a confirmed racist and a proven liar and thus, IMNSHO, a slime. My snarkyness is neither here nor there in regards to the facts.

Of course you are free to have your own opinion about the slime part; perhaps you like racist liars I don’t pretend to know.

Gosh. I just went over your blog, Salvage.

You really are quite manly, saying "fuck" in practically every post. It also shows your general level of sophistication. True, I felt like you were spitting in rage during each post, but I suppose it was therapeutic for you. It is also true that you get very few comments on your blog, which must be why you come here to gibber on.

I don't care if you cuss like a syphilitic sailor, but it sure doesn't help you spread your message of tolerance and understanding. And it really doesn't make you look very mature, but again, you don't seem to care much about that.

But here is something, seriously, that I would like you to consider. If you are ever wrong about something you write---proven wrong by more information, etc.---are you then a "liar"?

Don't start shrieking and flinging poo like a chimpanzee about Michelle Malkin. Just think about it.

And on the subject of racism, do you think---if I scour your website or over on Technorati---that I will ever find any commentary from you about Michelle Malkin that refers nastily to her gender or ethnicity?

You know I will, right?

How does that NOT make you a "racist"?

I'm not arguing with you about Michelle Malkin, even though I know you will post a long vulgarity laced reply about her many awful and horrible sins. As I say, I don't care about Michelle Malkin. I'm simply suggesting that you apply your own criteria for criticizing her...to yourself.

Now, perhaps you have never been wrong in any of your posts. And perhaps you have never, ever said anything nasty about Michelle Malkin's gender and ethnicity.

But I doubt it.

No, what I generally see, my potty-mouthed friend, is that folks like you have two sets of standards. One harshly critical set for your political opponents and one kind and understanding set for great people like yourselves.

There is a word for people like that.

Sure you can hate whomever you like. You can cuss and carry on. But it does amuse me to think that you represent the tolerant and understanding Left.

I do hope you get more interest in your own blog.

Doc,

An easy way to eliminate trolls is to enforce registration. I did that about three years ago, and my life has been all the better for it.

Funny how anonymity is the hiding-place for childish agression, isn't it?

(Oh, and I can't wait for the next anonymous troll to make fun of my name. That hasn't happened to me since... this morning. How original.)

Oh, and I forgot... it's a classic ploy of liberals to suggest how YOU should use YOUR OWN money.

That's because they believe that money is not private property, but the property of the State, to be distributed and re-distributed by the State because, after all, they know better than you how to use your (earned) money.

PLEASE spend your BlogAds money frivolously, if only to make ME laugh at their angry, impotent howls.

Dear Mr. du Toit:

Not all of the "anonymous" people here are trolls and nasty people. I have good reasons (having to do with employment) for using a pseudonym.

But you are quite right about the others, and perhaps registration is the right path to go. I just won't be able to post comments...and maybe that is fine, too.

I have followed your blog and posts over the past few years, and I respect you and your writing very much. Please do not think that all anonymous posters are cowardly or craven.

As for people making fun of names....well, I know how you feel, shall I say.

Let me know when leftists show some remorse for the tens of millions killed by the men they supported, like Stalin, Ho Chi Minh, Castro, Kim Il Sung, Mao, and Che.
----
Whenever you have the chance to post that historical evidence that Castro killed "tens of millions of people" feel free to put it up.

Yes, and because Isaac Newton figured out the mathematical formulae for gravity, he is completely responsible for everyone who has ever fallen off a building.

Good scientific method.

I like the way your blog is set up to keep out trolls and I might go to registration at some point. However, I am a psychologist and as such, find the free association in the blog comments very interesting at times. At some point, the idiocy and nastiness will lose its interest to me and become just what it is, people behaving poorly on the internet, but until then, comments are open. I also have some readers who are academics and others employed in places where they fear some retaliation if they post under their own name, etc. and I can respect that. I do not respect the nastiness of some of the trolls who come on this site, but the increased revenues are one way that I feel reimbursed for their tackiness. I do spend the money on myself, on all kinds of luxury items etc. but I also enjoy giving some of it to right-leaning causes that I believe in and will likely continue to do so. Thanks for your feedback.
