Hope Chelsea's Not Working too Hard in the Sweatshop

Wow, Hillary Clinton makes one of the first true remarks of her political career and then she takes it back and apologizes. I guess she needs every vote she can get come 2008.

I notice that Hillary includes a bit of pandering to buy off college graduates. Such pandering will have an interesting effect on Banks offering student loans, as the interest on repayment could be less than the interest that the bank is paying itself for its' loan(s).

Given Hillary's political savvy I'm surprised she made such a trite, stupid, insulting comment. Playing to the audience has its price I suppose.

Our parents complained about us, their parents probably complained about them. Why make such an insulting, meaningless statement?

Chelsea's, what? in her late-20s? She's making six figures? I would expect her to work hard!

Anyone who runs for president needs every vote that they can get, of course. There isn't necessarily anything wrong with that. George H. Bush once went out of his way to say that he didn't even want the atheist vote. I didn't actually mind him so much as President, but if he didn't want my vote, I'm glad that I didn't give it to him!

That said, Hillary Clinton is polling better than George W. Bush at the moment. One difference between them, which may explain why she is more popular, is that she has lately been faster to apologize and admit that she's wrong. I'm not saying that she is any saint when it comes to admitting error, only that she would be an improvement.

In this case, Clinton's real point, she claims, is that today's young people will have to work hard to compete in the global economy, and that they shouldn't take entitlements for granted. That's a more polite way to say it than claiming flat out that they are lazy.

I love it when these well-connected people lecture other people about hard work. (When what they have isn't the result of particularly hard, intelligent, innovative, or creative work.)

Right, Ms. Clinton, everyone is lazy except your family.

Heck, Greg, who isn't more popular than George W. at the moment?

dadvocate: You have a point there. But even that is happening for a reason. Bush speaks the language of certitude, not fallibility. After five years, a lot of people have realized that his main ideas just don't work, and that he won't admit it.

Today I almost feel bad saying this, because I actually like what Bush is trying do to with immigration. But the man may have used up his credibility at this point.

Hillary could have talked about a related and very real problem: the growing sense of entitlement that has been spawned by the "self-esteem" obsession in the public schools...which will seriously destroy the careers of many of its victims, and may well harm the economic productivity of the nation.

Guess she didn't want to go there...

David-

There is a very real self-esteem problem in our country.

Most people's self esteem is much higher than it should be.

David has a good point, and the problem goes deeper than that. Note the difference in expectations for compensation between families of WTC victims and Iraq War fatalities. Note hwo so many simple accidents are considered the basis for lawsuits in our society. There is a very childish sense of entitlement to almost absolute security and safety.

David,

Yes, the self-esteem programs in schools are ineffective at best and downright dangerous at worst. Violence has been linked to those with high but unstable self-esteem. I actually think young people who have grown up with these programs, the kid-centered culture and mom and dad overprotecting them have done fairly well, despite all of the entitlements that have been thrust upon them.

It's ironic that Clinton decries a sense of entitlement among young people, then announces legislation that will foster that sense even more - the limitation on student loan payments. You borrow money, it's YOUR responsibility to pay it back, not the lender's to make sure it's not a burden to you.

In the early 80's a group of Democrat politicians went around to college campuses trying to reverse a student shift to the right. At my campus, the response was pretty unanimous - these people come around complaining how shallow and materialistic students are, but then point out all the dole they've thrown our way, and ask, so why aren't you voting for us? as if to say, we got your your gravy, so support us, after blaming the lack of support on materialism.

Hearing a baby boomer lecture me about a sense of entitlement...oh, that's sweet.

As someone said earlier, did any generation ever NOT call the next one lazy? I can't wait for my turn.

Yeah, well...at least we have given up on calling you whiny. A lot of good that did.

One thing about calling the following generation spolied and lazy - you have only yourself to blame. Mom didn't didn't have to arrange admission to Stanford, if this kind of thing really bothered her so much.

Maybe Hillary is talking about those guys who still live with mom and refuse to enter the work force because it is unfair.

Dr Helen,

Some of the kids who have been exposed to the self-esteem propaganda are doing OK, but others are setting themselves up for a meltdown...parents are now attempting to helicopter in to the workplace.

Amazingly, some employers are going along with this, but most will not.

I tried the poll and 47% of people think "She was right the first time" and 40% voted "It's an overgeneralization. There are hard workers and lazy people in every generation." I voted the first one, but think the second choice is also valid. It is ironic that she claims to be against entitlements considering her connection to universal health care.

Out of one side of her mouth she says today's children have an air of entitlement, then she introduces a bill..."The proposal would limit loan payments to a certain percentage of their incomes, she said."

AAAAHHHWWWW...the poor babies need help from the village.

GIVE ME A BREAK!
