Pamela Anderson's Bust
You would think Pamela Anderson would have better things to worry about than whether or not chickens are mistreated in West Virginia--like maybe keeping an eye on the kids that come by her ex-husband's place to swim. Seriously, I understand her concern if chickens are truly being cruelly tortured before being slaughtered, but somehow, if PETA is involved, it sounds suspect. If they were that concerned, wouldn't it make more sense to go directly to picket the chicken plant where the birds are being mistreated than to try and oust a bust of Colonel Sanders from the Kentucky State capital?

Heck, KFC sounds good for dinner--maybe I'll swing by tonight. I am not supposed to eat fried foods on my lowfat heart diet but in this case, maybe I'll make an exception.

When you're hooking up with PETA trying to revamp your career, you know it's time to go. Or we may just see her next on the Sprint commercials. It seems like all actors on their way out the door do those for their last gasp. I actually like Pam Anderson just fine and watch her show "Stacked" at times--I find it kind of amusing.
B movie porn types fighting gravitic influences rarely miss a photo or news op. There's likely to be better coverage in the city, and it's probably cleaner there - all those nasty chickens, you know.
Interesting that PETA would promote a cause with Pam. I wonder if they sought her out, or vice versa. Hollywood and causes kinda go together, I guess, like fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy.

As someone who was once a vegetarian, why are you being so cavalier about KFC's use of tortured chickens? The cruelty chickens are subjected to on factory farms are well-known. That PETA would call for a boycott of a company such as KFC seems appropriate as I know they are also trying to approach the issue legislatively. Interestingly, PETA gave McDonald's a "thumbs up" this year due to changes they initiated in farming and slaughtering practices that take into account animal welfare.
I know, I know.. PETA has engaged in some truly offensive campaigning (Got Beer? and their Holocaust campaign come to mind). But the issue here is not PETA nor Pamela Anderson, it's animal welfare. And to support a company such as KFC seems simply adversarial.

A rational analysis shows factory raised chickens are actually better off than free-range. Dan down the road loses a lot of birds to coyotes.
Also studies demonstrate that campyolacter is rife in free range chickens. I don't want to be heaving my guts up just to keep Peta happy.
And then there is the looming specter of bird flu, which is again transmitted in the free-range condition. Maybe Pam is trying to top Rachel Carlson's record of having killed millions of people by her misguided attack on DDT.

Actually, despite some of the over-the-top comments, I like LGF!
Regarding LGF, as a supporter of Israel, I do indeed like Charles. But the comments sections are crazy. Far too many are reactionary and speak of paving over the Middle East or nuking it into oblivion!
JW - My family is from farm country as well and I know what good farms look like and there are many out there. But have you ever visited a factory farm? Horrifying.
Ronin - I'm not defending PETA. I like some of their marketing, such as their support for McDonalds and some Republican activists, which I think is refreshing. But I despise many of their campaigns and approaches. My point was, don't throw out the baby with the bath water. I don't see any reason why PETA should cause one to support cruel factory farming or a company such as KFC. Again, the issue is not PETA, it's animal welfare. And for all that are joking about running to KFC to annoy PETA, I'm wondering if there are any animal welfare organizations or activists that you approve of.
Frank - In my research and experience on farms, I don't see any evidence that factory farms are a better place to be a chicken then free range. And I certainly don't see evidence, that overall, factory farms breed a safter environment for humans and human consumption. And the bird flu? From what I've read, cruel practices, factory farming, etc. (which China is infamous for) provide a wonderful environment for bird flus!

I kinda liked the lead into the piece - that Pam should have watched what's going on on her ex' territory. It's from psychological perspective, I guess, or perhaps just a joke (over that silly kid, right?)
And awed by Dr. Helen's intelligence, may we ask whether the suggestion to picket goD forsaken plant in the middle of plain (boringly resembling what makes Dr. Helen so unmistakenly unlike Pam) is a serious PR strategy or yet another brilliant joke?

Having made a career of her own breasts, she's decided to worry about other's breasts...
'Pamela Anderson wants to meet with the chief executive officer of Kentucky Fried Chicken's parent company to discuss what she calls "reasonable, positive changes for KFC's chickens."'
She detailed her concerns:
"I must admit from the outset that I can't understand why a company that claims to care about animal welfare would continue to allow chickens to be bred and drugged to be so top-heavy that they can barely walk"
Ever see a butchering factory? Horrible.
I used to work at one. When I was on the night shift we used to fry steaks in the pig fat we got from rendering pig skin. Crispy pork rinds. A Southern delicacy.
Well I still like meat. But, I think if you are going to eat it you ought to spend some time on the killing floor.
No illusions.
What happens to chickens is of little importance.
Perhaps Pamela would like to compete with KFC, and really take a bite out of their bottom line.
I think I might stop at least once at "Pamela Anderson's Chicken Breasts".
Course the silicone flavor would be a bust...
If we were talking about pets, I'd be concerned about possible abuse. But we're talking about food here.
This is a preferred PETA ploy to use sex to push their agenda. The other day I noticed a PETA ad on Tim Blair's site featuring the bare bottom of a woman wearing a thong with the Aussie flag painted across it. I also noticed a story about some people stripping to protest cruelty to Aussie sheep and another about Chrissie Hynde appearing at a protest against something called mulesing.
That's an association that doesn't appeal: sex and cruelty to animals.
As for chickens, if Tyson could figure out how to do it, they'd grow boneless, legless, beakless chickens in vats. I decided some time ago that the reason KFC doesn't taste the same anymore is because of the development of "meat" chickens, a freak which eats incessantly and grows muscles beyond normal limits. The meat is tasteless, as anybody who's spent time in a hospital recently and been fed steamed chicken breast can testify.
Pamela Anderson should stick (read: "stacked";) to acting instead of this kind of PETA stunt. We don't have the yummy brand KFC here in Sweden, so we have to eat other types of chicken...

Well, Miss Anderson may be a twit, but her impulse is probably genuine, at least, genuinely felt. The interesting question is: why chickens? Let me suggest an only partly frivolous theory:
Miss Anderson lives -- nay, thrives -- in a profoundly mistrusting, backstabbing, utterly superficial culture. She can only have succeeded in Hollywood by trusting no one, being willing to betray anyone, and by concentrating on appearance to the exclusion of any deeper appreciation of the value of another human being.
But all human beings crave warmth, and the sense of worth that comes from caring for someone. What can she do, when her relationships with people are so corrupted? Turn to another species! Preferably an utterly powerless species, one which can't possibly pose a threat to her in the way that members of her own species do. In this way she can experience the warmth of caring, but avoid the anxiety of trusting another human being.
To the extent one can take this flippant theory seriously, it's why Hollywood's obsession with charity for children and animals has always made me suspect they lead lives of profound emotional isolation. Too much pretending to feel things, and perhaps you start to lose the ability to really feel things. Poor bastards.
PETA tried to hold a protest of KFC in a small town in Utah, to hilarious results.

Organic Baby Farm, what a horrifying blog! Too bad this is the image that many people have of Republicans - where anti-gay sentiments and support for animal cruelty generate laughs. Doesn't sound very "anti-idiotarian" to me.
