Somehow Being Sweet Like a Sailor does not have the Same Ring
Since when is cursing like a sailor against the law? I do it all the time so I was surprised when one of my readers (thanks Bruce) emailed me this Chicago Tribune article about a sailor who is facing a court martial and criminal charges brought against him for doing what sailors do best--cursing. He is also being charged with sexual harrassment for making some "spicy comments" about his ex-wife that was overheard by a female midshipman. I'm sorry but if you can't take men or women talking this way even to your face, you do not belong in the Navy but in a convent where sweet, untarnished behavior is expected. The good news is, the article reports that sexual harrassment complaints are down, but this is not enough for champions of victims rights:

This is not necessarily good news if you're in the business of victim advocacy--and it is a business, perhaps soon to become a career choice if Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) has her way. Slaughter is the sponsor of a 95-page bill that would create a Pentagon Office of Victim Advocacy. We may never win the war on terror, but we'll by golly win the war on hurt feelings.
Slaughter's bill has met with little success thus far, but the Pentagon is working on the idea. Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, reports that the Pentagon contracted with the Wellesley College Centers for Women to study the idea of an OVA and make recommendations. Wellesley has submitted a report for which it was paid $50,000, but the Pentagon has not released it.
Wow, I trust Wellesley College to make unbiased decisions on the behalf of women--I mean victims--everywhere. Somehow, I bet that if we did not have enough victims already, we'll certainly be having more if such an asinine bill flies.

I find this news disturbing in many ways.
I was trained to cuss from early on in my youth by my father's side. My grandfather dabbled in swearing, the most obvious aspect being his dog named Dammit (consider how practical that is). My father was a Vietnam veteran, shade-tree mechanic, weekend handyman, and a master of the spoken curse. Having taking up various sports, home improvement projects, and worked with some truly inept morons I'd like to think I've elevated this to an art form.
Legend has it that the eskimos have 50 words for "snow". Myself, I have at least a dozen or so forms of just the word "dammit" (no "god" required). With them I can convey anything from a "pleasant surprise" to telegraphed death and a pox on your house worthy of an Old Testament God. Any sailor or crotchety old man had better be at least that well equipped.
Shit? A knowledgable apprentice in the art could muster 8 or 9 forms. A true master has enough 1, 2, and 3 syllable shits to make an opera diva jealous of the range.
Everyone knows that fuck's flexible when phrased correctly, and usable as every part of speech in English.
Of course, you can scale up from there. Toss in a few balderdashes or bollocks for variety... Every now and then drop a really nasty cunt in the middle of a good rant and watch the shocked looks. You've got their attention now.
Cursing is truly a poetic form. Why don't they teach this stuff in school? :)
I spent 12 years in the US Navy from 1965 to 1976. Some might recall that era - draft in effect (not for the Navy), Vietnam, cold war, etc. Fun times. Not.
I think it's misleading to talk about cursing in the service. More accurate would be to view typical service exchanges replete with "curse words" as a dialect with traditions going back 100s of years.
Victim industry employees are everywhere. We can only hope that level heads in the services will not allow the Left to further erode effectiveness of the military.
Just to be fair, and I think this is reflected in the Tribune article, the women involved in this silly episode are not necessarily typical of women in the service, most of whom I believe are serious professionals like their male counterparts - tolerance, sense of humor and the occasional 4-letter word included.
This guy deserves AT MOST a minor reprimand. If the consequencse go beyond that, I will be seriously disappointed.
It's a long way from grabbing an ass or a breast inappropriately to saying mean things about your ex-wife.
I have any number of choice words about my ex-girlfriends, I'll remember not to let them loose in the vicinity of any demure & sensitive ladies...err...women...err...wymmin...err...victims.
I fully agree with Dadvocate. I spent three years in the Navy 1970-1973, and then 20 years in Reserves. When I was on active duty, women could not serve on most ships.
Thirty years ago, when women were just beginning to be allowed in the sea-going rates (specialties), I heard a story that relates to this: It seems that a woman sailor messed up doing her job. The salty old chief told her that she had messed up, probably quite crudely. The woman went home in tears and told her husband. The husband came in to berate the chief. The chief let the husband have it with both barrels (figuratively, of course). Why should her husband have to stand up for her? Couldn't she take a little criticism? She had received no worse a chewing out that any male sailor would have gotten.
Today, the woman would have gone to the Victim Board and complained. The chief would have been sent to sensitivity training, and forced to apologize to the woman. Feh.
The best part of the whole story?

Like many other evil ideas, victimology is just a good idea run amok. Rooting for the underdog or having compassion on the unfortunate is a sign of humanity. But allowing that value to trump every other value is just sick.

Yeah, I guess I'll just go with the self-promotion. This guy's superior has got to be a product of the old Navy policy, "stab-stab-twist-stab".
The girls who want to be victims or make everybody one are not representative of women in the Navy as a whole, in my experience. They just give all the rest a bad name.
Once a few of these are settled in favor of the lie about being offended, the mere threat will be sufficient to make any male sailor or officer do whatever the woman wants.

More info from one of my commenters. The supposed "victim" seems to have been pressured into helping LCDR Michelle Whisenhunt persecute LT Black. I've never said LT Black was not out of line, not that I wasn't accused of it. However, the apology should've been enough (the midshipman in question seemed to think so, after all); a letter of reprimand seems appropriate. What is going on now is a farce and LCDR Whisenhunt deserves some disciplinary action herself.
