I have an older sister and two younger brothers, but I was the only person (including Dad) that Mom allowed in the kitchen when she cooked. Hence, I can cook. It doesn't really make me self-sufficient, but it's really fun to bust on my girlfriend when she tries to make dinner and goes off on how men would starve if women didn't cook for them.
"You're deglazing the pork roast in a Lodge ceramic dutch oven when my Calphalon infused anodized sauteuse is in the drawer by your leg?! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!"
Then, after dinner, I have awesome "forgive me" sex.
So I increasingly gather, Helen, that you aren't really into the "forensic psychologist" thing anymore?
You read lots of novels and have lots of hobbies and are kind of a movie star with your important on-camera interviews.
In other words ... a housewife.
I don't really find that funny. You are going to get a life paid for by the sweat of a man. You can at least admit it, be gracious and slowly quit thinking you're important.
I hardly think Dr H needs the likes of me to defend her lifestyle, but S's post is a tad curious.
How many "housewives" jet across the country to interview people for Internet media TV?
You don't find it "funny?" What part of this blog do you think was intended as comedy?
As re her getting "a life paid for by the sweat of a man," are you privy to the Reynolds' financial portfolio? Maybe Dr H has no need to forensically psychoanalyze anymore (and it hardly sounds like much fun, and is probably very confidential if she still is, which would explain the lack of such material here).
...finally...
"be gracious and slowly quit thinking you're important."
Wow. Seriously. Wow. That's bitter/juvenile/presumptuous and arrogant all in one glass with ice and a mint garnish.
Frankly, this has played out since time immemorial.
Helen is no doubt smirking at getting her life paid for. But wait.
Just wait.
And then out may come the Kleenex when her body is 15 years older and the husband is 15 years richer. But she will be taken care of in any event by the great courts of our nation.
The problem I have is with Helen's constant pound of envy at "the rich" and her constant denial that anyone who gets rich may not have done it under their own steam - which kind of renders it null and void, or stupid.
She will *never* get rich under her own steam. Getting money - and lots of it - from parents or husband: Maybe. I have no idea of the details, nor do I care.
ZorroPrimo: "How many "housewives" jet across the country to interview people for Internet media TV?"

You don't get out much, do you?
My favorite girl supported by daddy was Pia Zaddora. Remember her? She accidently married a really rich guy who paid off people to put her in shows - and it still didn't work.
But Patricia Kluge and Ivanna Trump and Heather Mills and all the rest certainly do whatever the hell they want. It's just a question of money.
I for one am absolutely, fully, completely sick of women living off the accomplishments of men.
Money - I don't care. That's how it's always been.
But today, apparently, the "empowerment" of women is to leech off the accomplishments of men, and not just their money.
If you marry Albert Einstein, you did not co-author the theory of relativity ("On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies). You are just a dumb tussie who got him interested with sex.
Why does this friggin' even have to be explained? Is America getting that dumbed-down, politically correct and just plain stupid?
Lots. Not really hobbies, just skills. Some were hobbies to begin with. Grow some of your own food (at least). Learn to shoot. Heat with wood. Plane a board square with hand tools. Sharpen a chisel or a kitchen knife. Rebuild an automobile engine, do a brake job, etc., split wood, frame a wall, build a table or book shelf with hand tools and wood joinery. Fish. Sail a sail boat, build a dry stone wall, replace a faucet. I've done all those things and more and they all make me feel self sufficient. If you want to feel self sufficient then be self sufficient as much as you can.
Where I live in NH we were without power for ten days in the winter a couple of years ago and one thing I learned is that you are on your own when that happens so you better be self sufficient.
I'm planting an approximately 400 square foot vegetable garden. I enjoy growing plants in general and hope to sell some tomatoes, etc for money for my kids. Like Trey, I fish some, but not enough to consider fishing for food.
So I increasingly gather, Helen, that you aren't really into the "forensic psychologist" thing anymore?
How pathetic. I suppose to the liberal haters everyone is supposed to focus on only one interest in life. Maybe that's because they're only interest is in hating those who disagree with them or, somehow, manage to be more financially successful, happier, better looking, smarter, stronger, faster, creative, fruitful or perceived as better than them in any way.
excuse me while i tip-toe around the bile and comment on hobbies and self-sufficiency.
my hobbies are soccer, guitar (just discovered open-c tuning...) sport specific training, psyche-ology (nlp, hypnosis etc.) painting and i recently built my first tube amplifier.
while only the nlp and hypnosis allow me any self-sufficiency as i get paid for doing them, the other things allow me peace of mind.
and i spent 15 years in building construction and so i am going to add on to our new home that we take possession of in mid may...which i guess allows me some freedom from other trades people, a form of self-sufficiency.
dr.alistair, a tube amp? Cool, for your guitar or stereo? I have one for guitar and one for headphones, but no tube amp for my stereo. I would enjoy it if you shared the details of your amp!
I tried tomatoes last year, the first summer in my new house. I was late getting them into the ground but produced some tomatoes and learned a few things. First, I have the natural green thumb of Darth Vader. The rest is coming out in my first book, how not to garden. But I did get some tomatoes all through the summer, and then thought the season was over so ignored them, mistakenly. I think they are still in the ground, by the way.
Well, live and learn. You reminded me that I need to get back to it, even if I killed a few plants. Is that illegal? Enjoy your tomatoes and the little joys that come with them:)
I have long wondered if NLP was for real or just a bunch of Tony Robbins crapola.
If there is one book to introduce me to NLP that might convince me to try it out, what would that book be? What do you really get out of it? Is it mostly for self-improvement, or is it, like some people say, for manipulating other people? I'm really curious about this stuff.
Zorro - the one book I read on NLP was Influencing with Integrity. I use some of the principles and would use more if I could remember them all. (In my line of work, I'm usually communicating with a computer.)
Good book, easy to read and entertaining. Given to me by a psychologist.
trey, the tube amp is for my guitar and is a clone of a late sixties marshall "plexi" made by a company called trinity amps here in toronto. i completed the assembly, but minor soldering errors made the circuit noisy, and so once we move and i have time i will troubleshoot the darned thing and get it quiet. thankfully my good friend jon at www.tonefordays.com built a similar kit and is going to be a nieghbour when we move and will drop by and lend a hand to get it up and running.
zorro, tony robbins is a richard bandler student and as bandler says, do the fire walk once and use the new skill to challenge the next fear, not to follow tony around the world walking on coals.
nlp is about modelling what works and i have so much to say about what works and what doesn`t that i could write my own book on the subject.
reading about nlp is not an effective way of learning about it. i would recommend going to google video and watching richard bandler do his stuff and try to emulate what he does and see how it changes some of the things you do...if that`s what you are after.
i know it worked for me, becoming able to lecture and teach and help others to change...very rewarding.
my take on nlp is that it`s about powerful self-improvement, but it can be for manipultion also.
remember;nlp is a way to model what works, and there are extemely effective ways to manipulate people out there and nlp can model those methods as easily as the benign stuff. and by the way, google video is shutting down april 29th....
and olig...thanks for the wishes on our new place, and good luck with your search, and don`t rush...my wife was in a hurry at first and it caused us some grief, but we`ve found the absolute perfect spot for all our blended family`s needs now...and a starbucks within striking distance!
try, i own a late `60s ampeg v4 100 watt monster and have owned many marshalls and other ampegs, but as i get older i want to play more jimmy page and old billy gibbons blues and the trinity really delivers that crunch and glassy clean tone those guys like so much.
i have fantasies that include my own single end triode monoblock stereo amps and tube pre-amps and cd player but i have noisy step-daughter home from college, and she`s not moving out any time soon....and besides, i can`t really sit still long enough to get use out of them, yet!
The only problem with a 100 watt is how damn loud they are! I have a 15 bluesman jr, tube but nothing retro or vintage, and it is too loud for the house. I crave a boutique 5 watt that I can overdrive without peeling paint!
My stereo fantasies are similar, but with vinyl and computer front end.
Wow, I did, and it sure looks interesting. My problem, well, one of my problems is my electronic illiteracy! What little I can understand of what they say sounds cool, but mostly, I just want one!!!!!
You can put any pre-amp or power amp tube in it you want, and in any combination. Therefore, you can make it sound like any amp made ever made, as well as something never before possible. You can yank all but one power tube, and have an instant practice amp with all the crunch you can handle at low power, low volume. Or you can melt glass. I want one too!
Of interest, and for those not handy with a soldering gun and reading schematics - but still want to build their own version of a classic amp, or guitar guts.
WRT hobbies, I can put a quarrel in a 1" circle at 20yds, every time, offhand, from a 200-lb crossbow. This in itself does not produce a sense of self-sufficiency. But it does when I put the broadhead into the aortic arch of a deer.

Hunting would be even cheaper!

My *very strong* guess is that Oligonicella is a sock puppet of Helen.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. But Oligonicella is just too heavily invested in Helen - all the time.
I practice action shooting and blade fighting.
Frankly, this has played out since time immemorial.

And now M and MM apparently. MM, just Google my handle you moron.
S, M and MM, non viewable and new. Hmmm, who's the sock?
Do you have a hobby that gives you a sense of self-sufficiency?
Yes, but it's not the sort of thing I would discuss in mixed company.
Wow, what brought in the haters?
Trey
Trey: Tomatoes!
You ever in your life see a nasty thread about zucchini or even eggplant?!
NO!
Helen is digging on the whole gardening thing and some drive-by "YOU'RE JUST GARDENING ON YOUR HUSBAND'S PRESTIGE" types spewed all over the place.
Oh. The. Humanity.
Lots. Not really hobbies, just skills. Some were hobbies to begin with. Grow some of your own food (at least). Learn to shoot. Heat with wood. Plane a board square with hand tools. dr.alistari, good luck with the new to you home. I'm searching at the mo' as well.
As to hobbies, what I used to do that I referred to here frequently I no longer do. So, don't really have a hobby right now.

Helen loves men in general and her husband in particular. Is it any wonder that she is hated by 52% of the population?
And she has kids too!! She must be destroyed.

i will get back to soldering once i move.
and yes, the 100 watt ampeg is loud, that`s the point. evaporating birds is extremely cathartic.
I think of it as killing bugs. No need for the exterminator, just let dad play guitar on 11 for 10 minutes.
