Instapundit: Matchmaker

Glenn and I just had a really nice lunch with Ann Althouse and her fiancee, Meade, who were passing through Knoxville while traveling. Ann and Meade met though her blog where he was a commenter and they are now engaged. If you haven't read their story, do so, it's quite lovely.

When I hear about the "horrors" of the internet, such as it being an addiction or dangerous, I have to laugh, because, there are so many wonderful things about it, one is that it can help a person find love. Meade actually found Ann's blog through Instapundit. There have been other bloggers who met through Instapundit and I hope there are more. Did you get a date or meet someone through a blog? If so, leave a comment and tell us how it went.

Update: Ann Althouse has more.

So...when it doesn't work out, they'll sue you guys for wrongful marriage?

i met my girlfriend through a dating site...but interestinly enough, i had decided that day to pull my profile down and it was her comments in a dialog box, as i sat looking to remove my profile, that got my attention.

she said, "i`m not sure why you keep ignoring my comments, but feel i really need to speak to you".

it was so different from all the other comments i got that it caught me off guard, so i asked for her phone number and she typed it in and i called a moment or two later.

it makes me smile every time i think about the whole process, the discomfort i felt on-line, her quiet profile with no picture, her insistance in messaging even though i didn`t respond, (i didn`t respond to any text messages because my laptop crashed most times they appeared...) and then hearing her voice....

....and the feeling has never changed.

i had dated women from the dating sited before and they were keen to meet a fit guy in his late forties with a career, but they all wanted to interview me for the "job".

my girlfriend didn`t. she just wanted to hold my hand and walk and talk and we were just excited like kids right from the start.

we live together now and plan on marriage may 5th 2010, which is the second anniversary of the day we met.

not a blog meeting story, a text box meeting story.....close enough?

I'd read about Ann's engagement before and thought it was a great story. I hope they have a long and happy marriage.

To this point I've met two Net acquaintances in person. I no longer speak to either of them.

This coming weekend I'll be meeting a third Net acquaintance, who's in New York City for the summer. Hope that's the charm.

I thought it would be a great place to meet women. My wife disagreed.

I met someone through an online forum. Actually, I met someone on a listserve who invited me to a forum where I first encountered my s.o. We met in person a few years later before I asked her out. We've been seeing each other in meat-space for a year and a half now. I don't know exactly where it will go yet, but it's been a worthwhile endeavor regardless.

For me, marriage only serves to ruin a great relationship. I celebrate the divorced woman!

jimbino, it depends what the relationship was based on. i see marriage as a celebration of the desire to spend the rest of my life with the woman i love.

for some it means a legally-binding contract of servitude and obligation.

do we need to get married to do that? no.

do we want to?

yes, if for no other reason to see my name on my girlfreind`s driver`s licence....

...for me it has a sense of permenence...and i share that view with my girlfreind.

and i understand that some see that differently.

Hey, Dr. Helen!

What a delight it was for us to have lunch with you and Glenn and your darling Instadaughter! The food was delicious and conversation lively. Much fun and very memorable. Thanks!

I met my fiance through an online forum and we sparked off each other straight away. Even through we lived in different countries we spent as much time as possible with each other and had a long distance relationship the rest of the time.

Alas, our time together was limited (only three years in total)as he died before we could actually marry - we knew it was happening - but I count that time as the most joyful of my life and our story as such a happy one.

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.
Find me a find, catch me a catch.
Matchmaker, matchmaker, look through your book
And make me a perfect match.

Matchmaker, matchmaker, I'll bring the veil.
You bring the groom, slender and pale.
Bring me a ring, for I'm longing to be
The envy of all I see.

For Papa, make him a scholar.
For Mama, make him rich as a king.
For me, well, I wouldn't holler
If he were as handsome as anything.

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.
Find me a find, catch me a catch.
Night after night, in the dark, I'm alone.
So, find me a match of my own.

[Tseitel sings alone]
Hodel, oh Hodel, have I made a match for you.
He's handsome! He's young! All right, he's 62.
But he's a nice man, a good catch. True? True!
I promise you'll be happy. And even if you're not,
There's more to life than that. Don't ask me what!

Chava! I've found him! Will you be a lucky bride!
He's handsome. He's tall! That is, from side to side.
But he's a nice man, a good catch, Right? Right!
You've heard he has a temper. He'll beat you every night.
But only when he's sober- so you're all right!

[All three girls sing as dialogue, then together]
Did you think you'd get a prince?
Well I do the best I can.
With no dowry, no money, no family background,
Be glad you got a man!

Matchmaker, matchmaker, you know that I'm
Still very young. Please, take your time.
Up to this minute, I misunderstood
That I could get stuck for good.

Dear Yenta, see that he's gentle.
Remember, you were also a bride.
It's not that I'm sentimental.
It's just that I'm terrified!

Matchmaker, matchmaker, plan me no plans.
I'm in no rush, maybe I've learned
Playing with matches a girl can get burned.
So bring me no ring, groom me no groom,
Find me no find, catch me no catch.
Unless he's a matchless match!

I also have met good friends from working as a moderator on a social networking website.
I also met the girl I adore via her blog.

Helen ...

Remember this evening?

Well, later on, our host asked me out on a date. A little over 2 years later, this is where that lead.

So, while y'all weren't our matchmakers, you were there when it all began!

Hi, thanks for stopping by and for lunch.

LissaKay,

Yes, I remember that evening. Are you married to Rich? Why did I not know that?

Looking for love on the web could lead to a Web Side Story type of romance:

I now have one of my closest female friends who was once just a blog pal. If she weren't already married and living in a different state we might be quite the item.

I haven't found any dates in any comments sections, but a writer at the New York Times interviewed me today and is doing a story about something I did a few months ago on the Internet. I'm pinching myself, did that just happen? I'm such a nobody. Wow.

The very last post on http://muchadoaboutsumthin.blogspot.com/ details how 2 bloggers met and eventually married through the 'Much Ado' blog. There is a newspaper article about their meeting, too.

It's quite probably that I became aware of Bitter through Glenn. I have been reading Instapundit for years. It is through him that I became of aware of Jeff Soyer, and SayUncle too, and it was in the comments of SayUncle that made her start looking into who I was. At the time I was on Live Journal. So I would say that Instapundit is largely responsible for us being together, though we also credit SayUncle.

We're still together, still happy, and now The Bitch Girls is a food blog "Bitchin in the Kitchen", and she does her gun blogging at Snowflakes in Hell.
