I will either scan your new posts and leave if not interested or bring up the thread and typically read top to bottom.
On your blog too, we see a lot of people who will cut and paste for clarity, which obviously means they spend time and read through.
One of my favorite blogs for its content and depth of most commenters.
I'm far from surprised, Dr. Helen. I know for one, I read nearly everything on here, comments in all.
In fact, the comments are the reason why I come here. We have fun and intellectually stimulating discussions here. Most the comments show that people actually think about the question are generally well informed on the issues at hand.
You, Dr. Helen, do a great job starting the discussion then allowing the discussion to take it's course, whatever that course may be.
I come here just because of mary.
I keep you on RSS. Actually, when I first started reading I took the time to read all of the past posts.

I would like to believe that we all read the posts and comments. That's one of the things that keeps it interesting. That, and our brilliant hostess. This is one of the few sites where I'll wade through the comments. Again, interesting stuff.
It's nice to read that your blog is so well read. I never thought of it like that but your's is the blog I read the most.
Besides, where else could I read the comments of br549 and TMink, as well as Mary? And all the other guys. I usually find the comments discussions intellectually stimulating. (I hate to use that phrase but I don't know how else to put it.)
I come here only because this is one of the precious few blogs that tolerates zebras like me.
All the other blogs, left-wing, right-wing, insist upon purebred, thoroughbred left- or right-wing credentials. You can't be a conservative atheist. You can't be an anti-abortion liberal. You have to toe the party line.
Hey. Maybe that's an idea for a blog?! How many Americans don't feel comfortable with party affiliations? Is being Independent the new course for American politics?
Anyway, it's late and I need to rack out. I can hardly wait for the responses. Later!

Pajamas media had a contest at one point to try and give a name the person that you are describing. Someone who is independent and doesn't fit into a neat category. Despite what many "purists" think, many of us do not fit into either group, or at least not well.
Kevin M and Dr. H started me thinking. I have come to the conclusion that me, actually thinking, is probably dangerous.
Being opinionated as I am, and purposely posting immediately and straight from the gut without first "thinking it through" is one of the joys of semi anonymity, and hallmarks of my ADHD. It also reveals the rivalry between my IQ and my shoe size.
Where I am politically is because of two people. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Alas, the great Ronald Reagan is no longer with us. What he stood for and accomplished for our great nation fades more every day. I wonder if I am now a man without a party.
I am hopeful the new Jimmy Carter on steroids will bring forth a new Ronald Reagan. I'm searching. I don't see him. This would not bother me as much as it does, were our nation acting in such a way as to allow me to live the life I choose within the structure of the laws we have. PC blows in the wind.
PC people are more concerned with who I am and how I act (and that it be in their own image)than they are about who they are and how they act. If I remember correctly, those who are PC were non conformists at one time. Now they want all to conform to them, and are actively making it so. I fail to see the humor in that.
My thoughts are pretty much aligned with those already expressed above. The reason/noise ratio here is high, and there is a paucity of ad hominem attacks, and incoherent invective. Is this because Dr. Helen is adroit at picking out talking points or just because we are such a wonderful bunch - I don't know.
BTW, thanks to whoever it was the other day pointed at the article in The Atlantic titled "The Quiet Coup" - a first class read.
In reading the Quiet Coup, I find myself disagreeing with some of what is said. I can remember Bush making noise about this looming problem as far back as 2001. He was shot down, and basically dissed, by the left on the hill. McCain again, in 2006.
As eye opening and intelligent as the article is, I suppose we will never find two people who agree, or two articles that come to a consensus as to the causes or cures of this now worldwide blood letting. Emotion is winning the day, and change (my God - DO something!) for the sake of change is the trumpet call. One currency as a step to create "one nation, under the stars" - won't work that I can see. Moving manufacturing to poorer nations in an effort to raise them up will bring the ones who are "up" now....down. Band aids. It's always band aids. Available natural resources do not always comply with man made boundaries. As war after war will attest.
Bed. Oh precious bed! Heaven on earth to the weary head.

There might be a fundamental misunderstanding of what "viewing time" for a site or blog represents. Unless there is some kind of really advanced software I don't know about, all those "site statistic" software work the same way (sitemeter, statcounter, etc). How view times are determined is really a 3-part explanation:
1) Scenario 1: the user visits one page only, e.g. the home page, or whatever the first page was that he was directed to (via a link on someone else's blog, google, or whatever).
The important thing to realize with this type of visit is that there is no way to determine the lenght of the visit if no links are clicked to go to a subsequent page, to download something, clicking on an image, or etc. In other words, if the visit says "0 seconds" it could be anywhere between 0 seconds and infinity. e.g. the user may spend 30 minutes reading the home page, or maybe just 10 seconds; or maybe he leaves his computer on for 5 hours and walks away, then comes back and reads it some more.
In short, if no links on the site are clicked, there is no way to determine visit time, but it will always be recorded as "0 seconds".
2)Scenario no. 2: the viewer clicks on at least one link, saves an image from the site to his computer, or etc. (I'm not sure if refreshes, backs or forwards count but I think they do). Then the visit length that is recorded is the difference between the time the initial page was first viewed and the time the link was clicked; e.g., a page loaded into viewer's browser at 5:05 p.m., then a link was clicked on at 5:12 p.m., so at that exact point of the click, 7 minutes is recorded. Then if another link is clicked on (from any page) at 5:20 p.m., the visit time gets recalculated to 15 minutes.
3) Scenario 3: time span from last link clicked to end of session. This is similar to scenario 1: there is no way to know the view time between the last link clicked and when the viewer exits the entire site.

actually I might be wrong about number 3 above, because the software records an "exit page", so maybe it knows the time the site was exited.
