"She’s a redneck at heart, don’t you see.."

Neo-neocon on why the liberals hate Palin:
Cries that the Democrats have engaged in sexism towards Palin are not misplaced. Palin is also hated for her social conservatism—even by feminists, who acknowledge she’s a woman, but a woman from the wrong side of the issues.

But perhaps even more important to many liberals is that she’s a woman from the wrong side of the tracks. Or at least, that’s the way she’s been perceived.

Forget that she’s a college graduate, with a father who was a teacher. She went to the wrong college—or colleges. She’s a redneck, even if she’s from the far North where the sun hardly shines for half the year. She’s a redneck at heart, don’t you see, with the “mess” of a pregnant daughter and five children herself. How very gross.

If being a redneck at heart means freedom-loving, supportive of gun rights, low taxes, less pork, personal responsibility and smaller government, then count me in too.

I don't think so.

Neither, I think, would Don Surber.

Naaa.....

She doesn't owe anybody anything. She's her own woman. That scares the hell out of anyone trying to control her, trying to mold her into what they want her to be. She's a rugged individual. Alaska personified. Lucky for us she decided to be a Republican.

"Man, we gotta find some crap on this woman, fast!"

The more they wriggle, the more convinced I am she's the one. McCain is the man. Palin is the woman. Let's vote!

She's a redneck...GASP!

As we speak, millions of liberals are Googling the Internet to see if Sarahcuda ever attended a NASCAR rally.

Now THAT'S proof that she's wrong for the office of VP.

Obviously.

No doubt about it.

The woman probably buys her mayonnaise at Walmart!

Total White Trash.

Let's get real candid here. If Palin were pro-choice, her pick would be hailed by feminists (sure they would say they'd rather have Hillary but overall they'd be happy with her), and many of them would be conflicted as to whether to jump ship. Roe v. Wade is the litmus test in this election, just as it is for every Supreme Court nominee since Bork and even before. The stakes are high because it appears the Court is divided 5-4 on overturning Roe v. Wade, and with one and possibly two liberal justices set to retire in the next several years, the next president could send the abortion issue back to the states. There's a novel idea -- let the people vote on whether abortion should be legal.

Sandra Day O'Connor was a conservative, but because she was pro-choice she was hailed by the feminists as a "moderate" -- as in, "the court needs more moderates." What they really meant was, the court needs more justices who favor the right to abortion.

That's the overriding issue to those people -- anyone who doesn't buy into their world view on this issue is a scary nutcase.

Too funny---that it took some little Gal outta Nowheresville to take down the "preordained" candidate.

Preordination, predestiny....not a good look for the Democrats.

McCain and his potential lady VP make a sexier couple than the two stiff men the Democrats are displaying.

A distinguished older man always looks classy with an invigorating hot younger gal at his side. Something about the visual of McCain and the sexy gal that strikes an ephemoral chord on many levels.

Archivist,

That's right, anyone who is not pro-choice is automatically called names, insulted or fair game for abuse. I think liberal women often resort to the Alinksy tactic of trying to marginalize women who do not agree with them on the abortion issue in order to make others think there is something wrong with them if they disagree. Why not just say "I don't agree with Palin on this issue?" They think that by marginalizing her, others will not stick up for her, vote for her or align themselves with her in any way. Fortunately, this tired old tactic is resulting in a backlash.

I've mentioned this before, but from living the past 18 years in the Maysville, KY area, I've learned that redneck women live in a very equal plane with men. And, since Maysville's a small rural town in Kentucky, big city folk, especially northeasterners, consider everybody from Maysville a redneck. This is despite the facts that it spawned Rosemary Clooeny, George Clooney (partially), Supreme Court Justice Stanley Reed, last year's high school quarterback is now attending Harvard plus a whole bunch of other well educated and smart people and cool stuff.

These are the people that love Sarah Palin. She's one of them and not some snooty elitist.

I liken Democrats to a group of 5 year olds playing a game. As soon as someone is losing, they try to cahnge the rules, or start calling names.

They just can't accept that Palin makes Hillary, Pelosi and company look like a bunch of shrill Battle-axes (ooops, not p.c. I'm in trouble now).

Never mind that she is identifiable as a person. She isn't perfect, her family isn't perfect, but she can recognize her mistakes, grow from them and not make excuses as to why they happened. She isn't the victim repeating her victimhood every time she does something. She puts lie to everything feminism has preached for 40 years.

You didn't mention the truck stop (I drive big trucks sometimes), the wonder "AA" highway, and the pretty scenery that goes with the beautiful people I met passing through there.

I have anything wrong with rednecks.

Urban liberals find it impossible to understand neo Western Populism. Western rural women are beyond the world view imaginations of urban feminists.

Sarah "Lara Croft" Palin reminds me of my mother, aunts, and grandmothers in Montana and Idaho. My mother kept a 410 shotgun at the kitchen door; my Aunt Dode could ride and rope as well as any cow hand, and Aunt Elvie who ran cattle alone in the mountains wore a .38 revolver on her belt.

Western women have not disappeared nor their Populist world view shared by rural Western men. Gov. Sarah Palin is a fine example of a Western Populist woman. Eastern elitist liberals just cannot fathom it, or even recognize Western Populism.

The pit bull in lipstick has shredded the Obama-Biden campaign in just 9 days. The MSM is stunned.

Gov. Sarah "Lara Croft" Palin is the de facto leader of the GOP currently. It is entirely possible that she will become the first female President of the United States.

This has nothing do to with being a redneck or what college she went to. Liberal feminists is about being pro-abortion (with some man-hatred and lesbianism thrown in.)

I also don't think you can discount the jealousy that McCain had the balls to do what Obama didn't; pick a woman. Had Obama picked Hillary, this would be a non-issue. Instead he picked a boring, white, corrupt, lifelong politician. Democrats don't like Biden, that's why he got destroyed in the primaries.

Plus, Palin really does make Obama look like the empty suit that he is. He's a black John Edwards with even less substance and most Democrats know it.

Another observation: I've noticed that the criticisms of Palin vis-a-vis her children are really wacky, especially if you are married and have, or had, teenagers of your own (not just babies; teenagers.) I suspect that an awful lot of critics are childless by choice and know very few people who have kids (or, more rarely, are workaholics who never see their kids and so are clueless about raising them.)

The best illustration of this is the weird point that Bristol will "need her mother." That's a total crock repeated by people who've never had kids or have ever been around anyone who has for any period of time (or who bought into all the fear mongering crap peddled by Parenting magazine and others.) Pregnant women are not delicate creatures (they may be deranged at times, but they aren't delicate.) In fact, the last thing Bristol needs is for her mother to be hanging around. Good God, what a nightmare.

Maybe the really scary thing is the she appeals VERY much to the male vote. She's sexy, brassy, and smart. I watched her speech to the RNC, and let me tell you this... If I was an American, she'd have my vote based on that speech alone.

Way more human than anyone else on the "campaign trail", openly admits to being imperfect, not afraid to poke a stick back in their eyes (with considerably more humour - and SARCASM no less, only a small step below satire...betraying at least marginal respect for the average voter's intelligence.

I would fucking KILL for a politician like this in Canada....

Hey, check it out...a die-hard "woman-hating" MRA would vote a woman in to the Presidency (if only)!

Gots to be freaking the feminists out.

Trey --

You reminded me of one of my favorite tactics when contracting. I worked for Katherine - a statuesque black lady with great humor, we hung out a lot. In meetings with vendors (usually east coast types) I would stay mostly quiet and speak with a southern Mo drawl in short sentences. During this, I would watch Katherine start trying to control her giggling.

It was set-up, of course. They were trying to snow and after their spouting, I would drop my accent and launch into whatever technical truth was needed for the situation, usually as they sat with their mouths open and she laughed aloud.

Do not discount intelligence when listening to a southern or western drawl. We know damned well when someone is doing that. Um, so does George.

I heard on the news yesterday the DNC has dispatched 30 lawyers (30!)to Alaska in an attempt to find something....anything, on Palin.

That's a hell of a carbon footprint, eh? I wonder if they flew commercially, or chartered a jet just for the task.

Desperate efforts from desperate people.

very interesting essay Helen!!! You hit this real well. I was amused by comments about Palin going to "the wrong college" because I live about an hour from University of Idaho (her alma mater) and five minutes from North Idaho College (where she attended one year and where my husband and i and just about everyone else I know has taken a class or two). Because of the local angle, I have been following Palin closely.
Love your blog.

I'm surprised the lib femis haven't threatened to "Bork" her. Or maybe because that was too long ago?

Double standards here. Last week, I wrote elsewhere that she's a step backwards for women because she's not a liberal woman. (So, naturally, I agree with many other posters here.) Does this mean she's not a "real" woman? Clarence Thomas wasn't "black" enough, nor was Colin Powell. Other blacks have had that charge because they weren't from da street...yet, Barack Hussein Obama is not black enough, by their standards, because of his background and status, and by not being all black because of his parentage. But that's OK, he's all black because...why, gang? He's a liberal, so that covers a multitude of sins. If Sarah Palin was a liberal, being a redneck would be OK.

I find it too disgusting to grade, so it may be that Bork, Thomas, et al. may have suffered worse injuries, but certainly Palin has suffered more, more widespread, and more continuous viciousness with no pretext of applicability.
