"A city's environment can play a big role in how its citizens are able to cope with stress."
I was reading this MSN article about America's most stressful cities. It seems that Chicago is the #1 most stressful city in the US:
After reading about all of the problems in Chicago, I have a few questions. If Obama was such a successful community organizer, state senator and US senator, why is his city listed as "the most stressful in the US?" And if his "hope and change" mantra can't improve much in his hometown, is this a harbinger of things to come for the entire country if Obama gets elected? In other words, will the entire US become more like Chicago then before? Is this what we have to look forward to should Obama be elected?
The crisis on Wall Street has New Yorkers alarmed. But it's nothing compared to the levels of anxiety those living in the Windy City feel each day.
Chicago's rising unemployment rate, expensive gas, high population density and relatively poor air quality create a perfect storm of stress, according to measures we used to calculate the country's anxiety hot spots.....
But consumers aren't fretting about these pressures in a vacuum. A city's environment can play a big role in how its citizens are able to cope with stress.

"...if Obama gets elected [ ], will the entire US become more like Chicago...?"
Short answer: Yes.
Creating resentment and hostility may be a nation-wide endeavor, but Chicago is like a University “lab school” for this process. And Obama was a student teacher. And Ayers is a school administrator.
The hostility and stress are not secondary effects or unintended consequences of the policies or politics that are promoted by this system; they are the anticipated outcome of the University’s enterprise. The stress is intended to instill a desire for “Change,” or, at least, blunt any resistance to it. When I was a child, a trip to a White Sox game was a source of great anxiety, and not just because of poor play on the field; it was a “lock the doors” command from the front seat. I don’t know if this was necessary, I was only a kid, but I certainly hoped things would change. And the loathing I saw, or thought I saw, outside of the car window certainly reinforced that feeling. Will this change? I doubt it.
If anything, it will only spread and intensify. The groups who seek funding in the current bailout bill, such as La Raza and ACORN act as the cadre and field-grade command structure for the self-destructive, foot-soldier army that fights a low-intensity war of daily violence. With the threat of a fire storm unspoken, yet understood by all. And their numbers magically increase daily. The guerilla units feed on resentment and serve to create fear, and the absurd indoctrination system known as K-12 generates confusion in young minds; and the lofty dreamers of the University (nobility and general officers) believe that these tactics will lead to a new world and the end of history. Given the fact that the fourth estate has become a fifth column, I see no reason to believe that they will not accomplish the first half of their dream.
Oh boy is brad ever right on the money. I'm no conspiracy freak but if we think Obama just happened upon the place he holds without any major league training and support then we are tee total idiots of the first degree. We are in the middle of a major mess and the only hope is that the majority of the folks in this country are truly Bible clinging and gun toting whatever he called us. I am so afraid that somehow the crowd that backs this man will manage to disarm us totally. They are working very hard to do so and if they succeed there will be no stopping them.
I have friends that think Chicago is the best city in the world. But they are simple (rich, white) people. To them, who's playing Friday night at Schuba's is a much more pressing concern than how many people will be murdered that same weekend.
I'm so glad that I no longer live in Chicago and no longer own property there, and determined not to let one of the agents of change for the far worse get conrtrol of the whole country.
Some of the most virulently racist people I know are Chicagoans. Whatever they're doing, please don't make it the model for the country.
I read a (wapo?) article about blacks preparing for "what if Obama loses?" Of course they'll interpret that as racism, and not honest differences on the issues. I think there will be riots, like LA riots but national. I'm too young to remember much about the 60s riots, maybe it will be like that.
I take the very discussion as a veiled threat and I will not be cowed into voting for Obama out of the fear of race riots.
So let's see: environment is a contributing factor to stress.
I guess they really have started to give out doctorates in OBVIOUS.
Freakin' DUH.
I live in Chicago (Edgewater, north side, on the lake). Random points:
1. Nobody heard of Obama until he ran for US Senate. He was a state rep (state senate? Don't remember, sorry), but lots of people here don't know who their state rep is. His popularity has always seemed artificial and a bit creepy, like a fad that won't fade away.
2. Chicago is slowly and steadily gentrifying. Young, high-income, liberal (or lefty) couples that live in town and work in the suburbs. Somewhat detached from the realities of life. One hopes that they will stop seeing the city as their playground and start seeing it as their home. Not sure how that will turn out.
3. Hey, it's better than Detroit. Okay, that isn't saying much...
Wow, this is a phenomenal level of reasoning here--Obama was a mid-level politician in Chicago, and some analysis puts Chicago as the most stressful place in the USA, so Obama caused major stress for Chicago. By similar reasoning, McCain is from Arizona, Arizona has serious drought problems, so electing McCain will put the entire USA into a massive drought. Dr. Helen you never cease to amaze me with your intellect.
