My Thoughts on Sarah Palin
I have a PJM column up on the nomination of Governor Sarah Palin: "Why Palin is a Fantastic Choice."

Totally excellent thoughts.
My only worry about Governor Palin had been what I would call a hysterical misreading of her views regarding the teaching of creationism in public schools, but Charles Johnson has put my fears to rest:
"Looks like Palin made an off-the-cuff statement during a debate on a hot topic, didn’t really expect the criticism she’d get, and then softened her position considerably in a follow-up interview. But to quote just the first part of her statements on creationism and ignore the second is misleading; because in the clarification she’s describing a position that doesn’t cause me (a staunch anti-creationist) any discomfort."
Sissy,
Yes, it seems that people are getting hysterical about everything Palin does at this point. Thanks for the clarification by Johnson.
She's a creationist. What variety, by the way? They argue amongst themselves about how long ago and whether It is still diddling. They have no more consensus than anyone else.
Given that -- and?
I had a Catholic teacher who had no intentions of teaching catechisms in the classroom.
People (especially when it comes to politics) tend to become laughably shallow in their perceptions of others' beliefs.
Not liking her for being a Creationist is equivalent to not like me for being an atheist. Stupid. Like or dislike her for her whole being
Well, I really didn't think there was anything John McCain could possibly do to earn my vote. I had decided to support Bob Barr.
But the selection of Sarah Palin as the nominee for Vice-President impressed me to no end. This is a woman, a real woman, of the kind that is in far too short supply these days.
She loves her husband, who is a fisherman and oil rigger and snow mobile racing champion (a manly man--and note he is not the least bit intimidated by his wife's success). She loves her children and would not consider aborting her fifth child, even though he has special needs that will require far more attention than the others, who incidentally all enthusiastically contribute to helping raise the child. This is a solid family grounded in traditional values and morals, evidenced by the oldest son who volunteered to serve in the military and is now in Iraq.
But more importantly I am thoroughly impressed with Mrs. Palin's accomplishments. She went from hockey mom to PTA to city council to mayor to governor, all solely on the strength of her integrity. She took on corrupt politicians in her own party, cut wasteful spending, returned money to the citizens she represents, killed the bridge-to-nowhere, and even sued the federal government over the endangered species act. She supports domestic energy production and is not only knowledgeable but experienced in passing legislation to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. And she knows how to use a gun.
I can't say enough about her. She is a no-nonsense woman who does not question her responsibilities and gets things done.
She reminds me of my mother, who raised four children then went to work as a secretary/apartment manager. She became a Realtor, then a broker, and worked her way up to vice-president then president, was elected president of the local board five years in a row, and made so much money she bought the company, which she promptly turned into one of the most successful independently-owned real estate corporations in South Texas. She's now one of the most respected businesswomen in the state.
I predict much the same will happen with Sarah Palin. She is an excellent role model for young women today, much better than the whiny, bitchy, misandristic, misogamistic and indeed misogynistic, spoiled narcissists that pass for females in polluted contemporary popular culture. I fully expect her to fundamentally transform the Republican party and clean up the culture of corruption in Washington. I also think she'll be elected the first female President of the United States, probably in 2012.
Hillary Clinton can't hold a candle to this woman.
Plus the attack dogs are out in droves, so you know they're scared.
My vote is secured.
My friend olig wrote: "Not liking her for being a Creationist is equivalent to not like me for being an atheist."
Agreed. It is to my shame that so many of my fellow Christians, who should know better, have not accepted that gem of wisdom. Thanks for reminding us brother.
Trey
I am not at all sure that the Governor secured my vote for McCain, but I know my wife and I were all enthusiastic listening to her acceptance speech that is posted over at Althouse.
She makes me feel proud and patriotic, that is a powerful fact. Reagen did too. My wife asked how many people would vote for her just because she is a woman. I do not know, but the Governor is sure going after the vote of every one of em. So I think that there is a group of people that she will appeal to emotionally just because she is a wonderful, patriotic speaker, she is working class, she has actually reformed things instead of merely talking about reform, she is the American dream, and she is a woman.
Wow.

Oligonicella,
No problem.
As a result of the Palin choice I contributed to the campaign - first time I've done that for any candidate, ever.
Could this be the Tipping Point?
Cut out the corruption - make government smaller - insist on "personal responsibility".
I love Sahah's comments leading with "I have ....., I have....., I have....., instead of the Obama standard line of "I will....."
It's about "doing the job"....not theorizing about "how" to do it.
My daughter had had a bad couple of days, she is drained and sad. I wanted to cheer her up so I showed her some of the Palin videos.
I asked her how she felt and she said "Empowered." She also felt proudly patriotic. My guess is that is political cocaine, giving people that feeling. Obama does that, just not for me.
I wonder how many people Palin will do that for?
Trey
I'd feel a whole lot better about Palin if she had more experience. But Obama has the same deficit and Palin apparently has accomplished more in her time as governor than Obama has in his time in the Senate.
Only time will tell how quick a study she is. She doesn't seem to know much about economics (McCain and Obama don't either), which I consider a serious deficiency in a national politician.
Why bobh? Seriously. Becoming proficient in economics requires devoted study. At least at the level your comment implies.
I'd rather have someone shrewd at dealing with people and accomplishing their goals. In that arena, she took office in Alaska, fought the established corruption and won -- already a demonstrated trait.
There are advisors for economics.
She strikes me as a quick study and a strong decision-maker.
Chosen just because she's a woman? I heard Kay Hutchison's name bandied about more than Sarah Palin's; if not for all the strengths that the governor brings to the ticket, why would McCain have gone for someone not known on the national stage? Gawainsghost nailed the real reasons, IMHO.
As for the lib's who warn that the evangelicals (of which I am one) will be running the country, I remember similar dire predictions during the Nixon v. JFK campaign: With Kennedy in the WH, the Pope would be dictating all of his decisions. That didn't happen, either.
Helen I agree wholeheartedly about Sarah Palin. Before her selection, I was not enthusiastic about voting for McCain at all. But after he made this brilliant selection, I am fired up.
The Democrats are very very afraid of Sarah. I have written about this in my blog:
http://provocateurjim.blogspot.com/
Gawainsghost: From your lips to God's ears! May it come to pass. Esp. the part about Sarah being elected President.
I can't add much about Sarah...it's all been said in the comments above. I think we're drawn to Sarah because of her depth of character and authenticity.
Dr. Helen, your essay is excellent! Thank you for providing a thoughtful and mind-provoking atmosphere for discussion.
In my view the creationist issue is a red-herring. Palin just needs to state that her bottom line is the God created human life and that she does not accept the naturalistic viewpoint that human life was the end point of a long-series of chance mutations. She does not need to take a position regarding how God created human life or how long it took.
The only people who would disagree with this position are atheist who comprise less than 10% of the population.
Her position that debate regarding creationism should be permitted in school, but not required as part of the curriculum hardly seems controversial.
I think that if the Democrats go after her on a religious issue they will loose far, far more than they will gain.
"... who comprise less than 10% of the population."
-------
You realize, don't you, that it's a well known fact that 84.5% of all statistics quoted on the Internet are just made up.
The more I learn about Sarah Palin, the more impressed I am.
Her first acts, upon being elected governor, were 1) fire the state chef, because she can make her children's meals on her own, thank you very much; 2) sell the state jet on EBay.
That's what I'm talking about.
Up to this point my vote for McCain was a vote against Obama. Now it's a vote for Palin. I feel certain that McCain's wife had some input on this. She is a such a smart woman.
"Hillary Clinton can't hold a candle to this woman."
Actually, Hillary could easily hold a candle to this woman, but Governor Palin is not easily inflamed.
I don't know what country you all live in but for my kids sake, I am terrified that a woman who was a part time mayor of a city of 7000 3 years ago would be the President of the United States of America. The President is too important and it involves too many skills than I think Gov. Palin possesses.
Alaska has 700000 people, the U.S has 350 million. Does she know how to deal with Asian, and or Hispanic Americans, this country is changing. What does she know about foreign policy when we are in 2 wars.
You may say what you want about Barack Obama, but he has proved to the people who voted for him, he has what it takes. 18 million people voted for Barack Obama, there are 700 thousand people in Alaska.
If Sarah Palin becomes Vice President, it will be a scary day.
Also, what kind of Judgement does John McCain have to have met Sarah Palin once before choosing her to be his Vice President. If that was not political calculation, I don't know what is.
Would you as parents pick a caregiver for you children in case you die that you only met once?
It seems that the good governor may have a, shall we say, veracity problem. She was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it, and as to her denial of pressuring Alaskan officials to fire her brother-in-law, her dissembling indeed seems to be Clintonian.

Not that the trooper didn't need to be fired; he appears to be the kind of bully who should not be permitted to carry a badge and gun. However, politicians never seem to learn that it is not the initial conduct; it is the lying to conceal or cover up the initial conduct. If Bill Clinton had come clean (no pun intended) at the outset and admitted dipping his pen in the intern inkwell, he would probably not have been impeached.
Obama reminds me of a Lincoln statement about fooling people.
The Clintons are out of the picture now, at least until 2012. And in four years, maybe for good. amy's statements concerning Palin did not stop the people of NY electing Hillary senator, who did nothing before becoming senator, and has done nothing since.
Everything is nailed down now. It's time to vote. And may the best win.
"You may say what you want about Barack Obama, but he has proved to the people who voted for him, he has what it takes. 18 million people voted for Barack Obama ..."
-----
Oh come on. If a plurality of people vote for McCain / Palin, then they will have proved themselves to them (by your "logic").
I think this "my team is going to win" stuff is silly anyway; you should at least make an effort to say something convincing.
About abortion, Peggy Noonan had something to say a week or so back that has stuck with me.
Anyone who has ever used (or purchased, not sure which she said) a condom, knows when life begins.
The place I am in on the subject eats at me. I feel like Pontious Pilate at times. I cannot be judge or jury on the subject. But I find it deeply sorrowful, and horrifying. One woman with many kids by many fathers is horrifying also.
Ahhh, it's Monday.
amy --
"... but he has proved to the people who voted for him, he has what it takes ..."
Words with no meaning.
john --
I'll presume that pdf to be true. Excellent. It was well written and to the point. The boss of all the civil servants of Alaska decided one of them was to go and requested it. Job well done.
So, you are for her decision to can him and claim she was for the bridge, then against it, but the only evidence you bring before us is in support of your support and none supporting your opposition, then you imply she lied about something.
Nice case. Dismissed.
I'm now going to tell the true story of how my mother came to buy the company, because I believe it is highly relevant to the discussion on the nomination of Sarah Palin and indicative of what kind of woman she is. That would be a woman of strength and integrity, like my mother. (I would also add because some of the posters on this blog don't know women like that and wouldn't recognize one if they saw her.)
It was in the early 80s, I was on vacation from college and had come back home to visit my parents. Friday afternoon, before I left to drive back to Austin, I took my mother to lunch. (She had by this time become the primary broker and worked her way up to president, and I thought it would be a nice gesture.) As we were getting into my car, I saw the owner/founder of the company--a multi-millionaire out of Minnesota, whose grandfather had raised race horses for Al Capone in South Texas (that's how they got their money)--and the secretary walking out of the office. Her hair was neatly done up in a bun.
After lunch, I dropped my mother off at the office, and walking down the sidewalk came the owner and the secretary. Her hair was now combed out, long and flowing down her back. I turned to my mother and asked her if she had noticed how the secretary had her hair fixed when we left.
"Yes, she had it up in a bun."
"And now?"
"She combed it out."
I looked her right in the eye and asked her point blank, "Combed it out or fucked it out?"
"You don't think . . . !"
"I don't know. But I do know this. There isn't a woman alive who would take the time to fix her hair in the morning to go to work, just so she could comb it out over lunch."
About a week later, I got a phone call from my mother. "You were right! He's having an affair, that son of a bitch!"
I asked her, "Well, what are you going to do?"
She said, "I'm going to do something."
Two weeks later, she called and told me that she had bought the company. This is what she decided to do. She walked into the owner's office and told him right to his face, "I run a real estate company, not a brothel. Either you sell me this company, or I quit."
He said, "All right, quit." So she did. She walked out, and every other Realtor in the company walked out with her. In other words, she called his bluff and forced his hand. Now he had an empty office building, hundreds of listings, and no one to answer the phones. He had to sell the company to her, because no one else would buy a real estate company without any Realtors, and no Realtors would work there unless she was running the company.
That is the truth. And it's the same with Sarah Palin. When she was appointed to the Alaskan Oil and Natural Commission, found corruption and graft there, she quit. Walked out, then took on the entire party establishment, and won. She did so because she has too much self-respect and integrity to tolerate or countenance corruption and graft. And her state is a hell of a lot better off since she became governor. Just as the company is a hell of a lot better off since my mother became the owner.
Once, back in the late 80s, my mother was offered $30,000 under the table to falsify a contract to make it look like the buyer was paying more for a property than he really was. She stood up and walked out, let the deal die. Her reputation is worth much more than $30,000. In fact, her reputation is invaluable and not for sale at any price.
That's Sarah Palin right there. She's not for sale. She will not take part in under-the-table or behind-closed-doors deals. She works for the people and places their interests first.
I know women like this because I was raised by one. And, I have to say, the media and the Democrats don't know what they're getting into by trying to mess with her. All this crap about her special needs baby and slander of her teenage daughter, that's only going to piss her off. And the last thing you want to do is piss off a woman like this one. Once she decides to do something about it, she will. The outcome won't be pretty for you, but it will be for her and for the people she represents.
I don't know what country you all live in but for my kids sake, I am terrified that a woman who was a part time mayor of a city of 7000 3 years ago would be the President of the United States of America. The President is too important and it involves too many skills than I think Gov. Palin possesses.
You claim that you're frightened about her lack of experience to be VP but you have no problem with Obama's lack of experience to be president. Wierd.
Here's a potentially very interesting research project for someone to do: go back and see what some of those who're claiming Palin is too inexperienced for the VP slot were saying about Geraldine Ferraro. When Ferraro was picked for the VP slot, all she had was 5 years in the House of Representatives.
Palin isn't a liberal feminist, so she must be destroyed. As "host with the most" wrote on Ann Alhouse's blog, "The Democrat Party - it's not too late to join in the hate!"
a woman who was a part time mayor of a city of 7000 3 years ago
That comment might make some sense if Sarah Palin hadn't just spent two years of the intervening years being Governor.
Would you as parents pick a caregiver for you children in case you die that you only met once?
Wow. I'm not up on my logical fallacies - which is this: appeal to emotion or appeal to fear? Or, does it just not make any sense at all?
Great column, Dr. Helen!
I have found my reaction to Sarah Palin to be incredibly mixed. As a 50 year old college educated woman - I am thrilled to see (and certainly believe) that women have much to offer in the highest offices of the land.
As a mom of two (college & post college) something just makes my insides turn about this whole situation. Any family can have things that do not go as planned and we certainly all do. NO judgment on that at all. However, so much seems to be going apparently wrong in that family that I just do not feel right about it all.
The oldest son is gone (out of state) for six months his senior year in order to get the best possible chance for college hockey recruiting - but never goes to college?? What happened??
Then second child is pregnant and according to the boys Mom they were planning to get married prior to the baby and this is just an "extra" blessing. I understand the half-full concept but this is not a "wonderful" thing..it is an ok thing - something that can be worked through and loved through but it is not an "extra" blessing to be a child having a child. So child number two is apparently not going to have a "tradition" college experience either. How emphasized is education in this family? The big deal is that they are getting married...ok..fine..I have no problem with that and as a conservative Christian I think that is great (as long as they are truly wanting to and have premarital counseling to make sure they understand the commitment)..The premarital sex is already out of the bag...lets not compound it with a divorce years from now...but where is the plans for the educational future of their daughter? and how about the future son in law??? He appears to be aimless as well.
Who is mentoring these children? Additionally it really bothers me that she has three kids still at home (at this point I am not counting Bristol) that need family to be first. How can Sarah do that now? The VP has to put "Country First". As a Mom, I feel sad that she is not willing to delay her "political" day in the sun until her children are older. And YES I would not be saying the same if she were a Man. I DO believe in women - so much that I believe they often make or break their families. Things seem to be breaking down in Sarah Palin's. Does this make her "bad" or to "blame" NO WAY. However, it does make her need to step up to the plate as a MOM and focus on the new "special" needs of an infant with issues and a pregnant teen daughter (in addition to her other two at home).
I have learned a lot about myself in the last couple of days and I thank Sarah Palin for that. I do believe women have a place in politics and I do believe a woman can be a Mom & work. I do think however that there is a constant need for balance...high-powered job - fewer kids maybe? High-powered job - delayed until kids are older maybe? Problems begin in the family - down scale job pressures immediately!! You only get one shot at being the best Mom you can be. No one that I know of has ever gone to their grave saying - my only regret is that I was not VP of America! However, many have regretted on missing out or misusing their time with/influence on their children.
Let's also not make our compassion (and we should have heaps of compassion and there but for the grace go I) for Bristol create an environment where we celebrate the unwed child mom pregnancy as a "feel good" thing with the cute girl and handsome guy and how great they are for not killing the child that they should have not created in the first place. This is a most unfortunate and undesirable circumstance. But one that no fingers should be pointed at and one that can with proper involved parental guidance become a positive defining moment in Bristol’s life.
Let's hope that Sarah Palin make the courageous choice to put aside personal professional gain in favor of putting "Family First".
Am I the only crazy woman who feels this way???
Mary Knapp:
I'd say ... get off the kids' back. It's not your nosy problem and kids sometimes need some time to find out what they want to do.
Besides, if women should be home watching the kids (you DO believe in women ...), then what the hell does she need a college education for?
Palin seems to be able to balance this with her husband, so that's pretty much all you need to know. Your insinuation that men are not able to help out with kids is one of the more sickening and sexist things I have read.
You're probably trying to self-justify being a sit-at-home - well you don't have to do it by projecting onto people who are apparently more competent in life than you.
Tether,
I obviously pushed some buttons on you and I am sorry for that.
However,
(1) It could only be considered nosy if I dug around to find the information instead of hearing it publicly along with the rest of the nation from their parents =)
(2) I agree 100% with your statement that that kids sometimes getting off course and need time but when you have two in a family in a short amount of time that appear to be off course of the path that THEIR family had set for them...it often in my experience means the family needs to regroup and should be allowed and encouraged to do so.
(3) Men are fabulous – I believe that I would not be out of line in stating that most people would believe that a woman would be better at handling a breast-feeding infant and a pregnant minor daughter then a man. Not that a man who needed to would not do an admirable job of it...but in this case…a Mom can. She is alive, well, and financially able to provide for the kids she has chosen to have without taking the higher-pressure VP job.
(4) She may be much more competent then me =) no doubt about that.
The question is...can I in good conscious vote to put her family in a position where if she does her job correctly - she can NOT put her family first...knowing what SHE has publicly disclosed about what is going on in her family.
For me...I cannot. However, I fully respect your ability to respond to the same data differently!
I think one of the best things is when people can share their opinions without being derogatory towards those that feel differently. I do not apologize for my position. I do not expect you to apologize for yours. You might consider how you might share it less confrontationally in the future however =)
mary knapp --
Oh yeah, you are out of line and for this reason, you purposefully stuck in breast-feeding infant in order to bias your statement against men when there's no reason to assume or demand it. I have had a pregnant minor daughter. Her mom ditched her, I didn't. Apparently your homily doesn't hold.
By the way, she is putting her family first. She's attempting to make the country they live in better.
Oligonicella -
I did not put the "breast feeding issue" on the table. Sarah Palin did by mentioning it multiple times to the media.
If your concern is that I am "dissing" full time Dad's or single parents then I assure you I am not. There are times that you do not have options and you make wonderful lives with the options you do have. Your daughter was obviously lucky to have you.
I have heard the putting family first by making the country they live in better argument and it does not work for me but I respect that it does for you.
It sounds suspeciously like the argument used for a Father who has many other options but chooses to get up before his kids do and return home after they are in bed...so that he can "get ahead" in his job. He is doing it "for" his family.
I am pretty sure if you asked the kids they would rather have Dad home more, a smaller house, and camp for vacation rather then ski.
I will however agree to disagree.
I find I am extremely (and perhaps even over the top) passionate about how important parenting is.
We don't all start on a level playing field. We have different need kids, different financial situations, two parent homes, single parent homes, grandparent raising kids again homes, etc. I am not suggesting a "perfect norm" but that where ever we are starting from that we put our kids needs as a high priority in our decision making.
For me - I could not leave a job that I already had...to run for VP knowing the pressure and national spotlight it would put on my pregnant teen daughter just to name one of the many "high maintenance" family issues going on in that family.
We all have them....it is how we handle them that sets us apart.
I hope your daughter has told you "thanks" recently =) If not I am sure she thinks it!
Mary Knapp:
I read passive-aggressive crap like what you are churning out and have a true burst of joy that I am not married to someone like you.
I've got a sneaking suspicion that you are not only a sit-at-home parasite, you are also the type who makes life unbearable for whatever sap is supporting you.
Mary Knapp sez:
"It sounds suspeciously like the argument used for a Father who has many other options but chooses to get up before his kids do and return home after they are in bed...so that he can "get ahead" in his job. He is doing it "for" his family."
----------
Maybe it's not that he doesn't want to see his kids (as you suggest), it's that he doesn't want to see the bitch. And we know who that is.
Between working too much and working too little (the latter also involving the risk of getting fired, meaning not working at all), men usually pick up on which will result in worse consequences. Especially if we're talking about the type of materialistic pig that he wants to avoid by working overtime - she will take the kids away from him if he doesn't produce, but she will simultaneously cut him down for working.
I'll tell you, Mary, you want to assume the worst possible motives in men, extend them to all men in the form of stereotypes, and then throw in some reasonable-sounding language as filler. Just go watch Oprah or something and leave the adults alone.
mary --
I am not suggesting a "perfect norm" but that where ever we are starting from that we put our kids needs as a high priority in our decision making.
Pretty damn presumptuous of you to presume she isn't doing exactly that. So, your choice to be a stay at home mom is the "correct" choice and hers to work to make the world a better place is not. Nice.
