Should teens who suffer school phobia be given thousands by taxpayers for expenses "related" to being homeschooled? Rachel Lucas doesn't seem convinced.

If the child went to public school, the district would have paid a similar amount (or maybe more, if state spending was included?). I don't see any difference from what goes on at public schools and what this mother spent the money on. In fact it sounds like the child received a more well rounded education for the same amount of money.

Phobias are easy to treat. $300 to $500 should take care of a simple phobia in treatment, if the parents are committed to the treatment.

This woman just ripped off her neighbors.

Matthew, did they have modeling classes at your high school? How about a kennel? Come on, this was a rip off Matthew.

You missed "She has also spent it on modeling classes for Rebecca, subscriptions to teen magazines, and travel to New York and Toronto with a summer camp"?

For modeling classes and travel trips, she would have to demonstrate an ability to work in crowds. Hmm. School -- crowds. Hmm. Sounds like her mother had her fake a 'symptom'.

But this child is NOT being homeschooled. If you read the complete article, her mother acknowledges that she is not homeschooling her, and that no "formal education" has taken place for more than a year.

This child's education is being neglected under the watchful eye of the Palmerton School District, with full financing and approval from the government of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Could this be yet another manifestation of the "crazy money" scheme to defraud SSI?

Oh for crying out loud, this is the kind of crap that gives homeschooling a bad name.

But her writing skills are weak and she can only do basic multiplication and division on downloaded worksheets. She estimates she spends three hours a day learning. Barbara Maykish has opted not to homeschool her, saying she worried that she would not be able to help Rebecca with her math and writing problems.

I live in PA, and I am required to prove to the school district's satisfaction that I am giving my children an "appropriate education" by submitting standardized test scores, a portfolio of work samples, a list of all materials used and educational activities undertaken, a log proving I spent 180 days or 900 hours on educational activities for each school year, and have my kids interviewed by a certified teacher.

I didn't know I could skip all that by having my kids cry when it was time to get on the school bus.

marbel - I too homeschool in Pennsylvania, and am horrified by this story.

There is no excuse for this mother's failure to educate her child.

The PA Dept. of Education oversees DOZENS of public cyber-schools and has for more than five years. Certainly, this young lady could have received a public school diploma from the comfort of her own home if she and her mother were inclined to do so.

School phobia must be the nice way of saying Acute Fear of Getting Ass Kicked With Impunity And Then Getting Suspended or Expelled Along With Your Attacker. *Writes up suggestion for the DSM*

She certainly should have educated her daughter. But modeling is a skill, and I learned a lot of things in summer camp that were more useful than what I learned in school. Beyond the basics, which schools barely teach anymore, you can substitute any number of activities/skills.

My main point, though, was that when you add up all the stupid crap like recycling, condoms on bananas, "cultural" performances, plus general misuse of public funds for teachers and staff, and what this woman did is really not much different from how the public schools spend money. If you told me her child's age and educational achievement, I would have assumed she went to public school.

I'd rather send a kid to public school with the hope that something useful might be learned as opposed to keeping a kid at home, having the gubmit hand over $45K to the parent, with the assurance that she will learn nothing.

Those public school students must be learning something. They all seem to have myspace or facebook pages where they write extensively about, well, whatever they wish.

I tried the 'school phobia' dodge. My mom bought it but not my dad. I am living proof that you can hate and fear school every single day - and still graduate.

Both mom and daughter ought to be beaten with a stick. This will take care of their malingering habits.

Unlike Bugs, I never actually tried claiming a phobia or other disorder, but I, too, am living proof that you can fear going to school every day (at least until I was a Senior, when I had an epiphany about how childish my tormentors were). I DID stay home a few times with stomach cramps, but usually I would suck it up and go in anyway, so as not to disappoint my parents.

That is the mature philosophy in a nutshell. Deal with the discomfort and do the right thing anyway.

Rachel, like you, is a hoot and a godsend. Common sense coupled with real live intelligence and a firm grasp on reality, has become so rare.

I love the helmet!

The story sounds like fraud, but some of the comments about "suck it up" don't reflect just how severe emotional disorders can become. There are cases where will-power and determination are not enough.
