Read the article. Mary Winkler is one sick puppy. How much do you want to bet the kids would develop a sleep disorder if they have to go back to her?

Not only is Mary one sick puppy but some of the people defending her have the morality of an alley cat. Hallerin Hill, our local talk show was just on and a male caller jcame on to defend her. I really wonder what in the world people are thinking. I do think it is some type of turn-the-other cheek thinking that is resulting in murderers getting off for unbelievable crimes. Now, even Phil Spector who shot a woman three years ago is in court with discussion of dropping his charge to manslaughter. What is wrong with our society that people who kill others are given this type of kid glove treatment?
The Phil Spector case has gone into the ridiculous too. Where do they find these jurors?
The other aspect of the Winkler abuse claims is that shooting someone in the back while they sleep is the ultimate abuse. Winkler sounds like a woman without a conscious.
As for Winkler, this is symptomatic of our legal system treating female perpetrators of violent crime as if they are afflicted with some mental infirmity that reduces their culpability. The implicit thinking is that their evil acts are not prompted by rational thought, as is a male's; rather, their vile acts are prompted by some irrational emotion, and that emotion (whether fear, love, hate) is viewed to be completely understandable under the circumstances -- given the woman's more "fragile" state. This accounts for the difference in charges and, especially, sentences between male and female sex offenders. (From a legal perspective, of course, the differential treament is generally wrong because intent to commit the act, not the motive, should be the overriding consideration.) Why did Mrs. Bobbitt not serve a single night in jail? The act of mutilating her husband was deemed to be an emotional resonse to her husband's supposed prolonged abuse.
In any event, this thinking is, of course, a vestige of an era when women were not deemed capable of owning property or cutting business deals -- because they supposedly could not make rational decisions. This sort of thinking is as insulting and patronizing to women now as it was then, and NOW ought to be leading the charge to change the way we view female violent crime.
I believe you'll find that female perpetrators of fraud are treated similar to male perpetrators -- because fraud clearly is not driven by emotion, but rather by cold, calculated greed.
