What I Learned in Men's Health

Warning--do not read this post should you be one of those types who suffers from Internet Induced Hypochondria.

I often read Men's Health magazine, it's not the best read in the world but one can generally get some no-nonsense information on diet, exercise and health. There was a very good article in the September 2007 issue on a heart condition that often afflicts fit men. There is probably a lot of recycling of these stories in various magazines, but I found this one informative.

The article, entitled, "The Fit Man's Heart Threat" takes a look at a condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. The author of the article is distraught that his friend, 43-year-old Bill died suddenly while running a marathon. He finds out his friend had cardiomyopathy and talks to the president of a foundation for this disease:

"Anything more than 1.5 centimeters is definitive," says Salberg. She explains that HCM is characterized by the thickening of heart muscle. As the muscle wall separating the right and left ventricles bulges, it obstructs the flow of oxygenated blood leaving the heart through the aorta, making it more difficult for the heart to function, particularly during exercise. It's caused by a genetic flaw that can be passed down from either parent. So far, researchers have pinpointed 14 genes associated with the condition. Those who carry any one of these genes generally develop HCM during adolescence or early adulthood.

Then she drops a whopper: One in 500 people has HCM. It's more prevalent in the United States than is HIV and Parkinson's.

And then another whopper: You know you have HCM if you die unexpectedly. That's often the first symptom. About 15 people in this country drop dead from the condition each day. It's the most common heart-related killer of men younger than 30.

One of the scary things about this disease is that exercise can bring it on:

.... In April, the American Heart Association released a scientific statement noting that although regular physical exercise is now widely advocated by the medical community, studies show it can increase your risk of early death. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that joggers in Rhode Island were 7.6 times more likely to die early than people who didn't run. In another study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers reported that the incidence of cardiac arrest during exercise was 25 times higher than during light activity or while resting. The AHA statement concluded that exercise "acutely" increases the risk of sudden death in "susceptible persons." For these people, "the health risks of vigorous physical activity almost certainly exceed the benefits."

Are you a susceptible person? I was, although my heart condition was a bit different. The only way to find out if you are at risk is to ask your doctor if you need tests such as an ECG or EKG and if abnormalities are found, to follow up with an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) or whatever tests the doc recommends.

If you have gotten this far in the post, don't get paranoid but do take care of your heart health; it's important.

Died from what?

Given the way people drive up here they are probably as likely to have become a hood ornament as have heart trouble...

I keep telling her that exercise is bad for your health, but she won't listen to me.

Now I have proof!

As much as I'd like to believe Lazarus Long (Moderation is for monks) I'm afraid I have to agree with Mr. Surber.

Excesses in anything are typically bad, whether it's exercise, food, leisure, or faith.

i knew a lad, he was a few years older than me, he was fit, but he died suddenly, epileptic seizure and he was gone.

my philosophy is, when its your time its your time, i would rather make the most of the time i have, than worry and do all these daft fad diets, to just live an extra 5 years in misery.

it can happen to anyone , at any time, any prediction when a person dies, its rubbish.

100% of all people who drank water died.. 100% of all people who exercise die, 100%.. might as well make your life into something fun, or remembered. thats the only immortality

if this is such a large killer, why hasnt anyone spoken about it (i assume most of the sufferers are males), just like prostate cancers kill about the same amount as breast cancers.

I wonder if this is what affected Puerta, the 22-year old Spanish soccer star we played for Sevilla and his country. He collapsed during a game just three weeks ago, collapsed again in the hospital, and passed on in the hospital. It appears he had a heart issue, and it almost has to be HCM. Many soccer clubs across Europe are testing their players after his death, and I hope this is not just a passing fad.

Mike,

The article I linked mentioned a number of athletes who died of HCM including football player Thomas Herion, basketball players Hank Gathers, Daniel Rumph and Reggie Lewis and Hockey player Jiri Fischer who collapsed during a game but lived and hasn't played since. Italy screens athletes who want to play in competitive sports but British and American cardiologists say that there are so many athletes that it would be hard to screen. In addition, the ECG often turns up a problem when there isn't one. And athletes themselves may not want to be screened for fear they will have to stop playing.

Your answer-- it affects males primarily-- hence women have NO interest in it. Since we live in a gynocentric society-- devoted to the needs and interests of females- there is no9 interst in funding research into men's health needs-- unless they can be combined with serving women's health needs.

Anecdotes-- the researcher who said he would love to research why boys committ ( not appropriate) completer is preferred-- suicide at 6 times the rate of girls--- no funding, no interst-- because all the money went to studying girls.... Heart Disease suddenly becomes a burning issue when it is revealed that -- OH GOD !-- it is the number 1 killer of women ! Oh No ! ( illusory-- women live so long the heart gives out-- it is not like men who die in the prime of life).... I treasure the news story that headlined "Good News"-- why-- women did not suffer from an illness more than men-- men in fact were more alfflicted !!! GOOD NEWS ! Incredible---

Gynocentrism--- and women do not care about men's health issues, like they do not care about any bias or discrimination against men. Women, typically, are totally self-centered on what affects women and girls-- they are incapable of genuine empathy for men--- for boys before puberty only, becasue they identify with the mother. Indeed , women have no empathy for men on any topic-- unless it has a very direct impact on-- the only relvant value for women-- again, it it impacts a woman
Thus if a man is so overburdened by illegitmate child- support demands, that it affects his marriage and the all important female, females feel sorry for him, because they have empathy for the wife. If it just damages a man-- they don't care, rationalizing it in a million ways or actually uttering "cry me a river" etc.
No-- women have empathy only for other women-- its easy to test, easy to list a million examples... ever met a woman who gave a cent for prostate cancer ? You never will... any interest in why men live 5 years less? Why-- who cares, it doesn't affect the relevant people, females... upset about unjust laws discriminating against men-- Why-- only women count !
Thus equality and fairness and justice etc-- to women they mean-- "Whatever is in female self-interest" and such terms are to be ignored if they fail the MacKinnon test " Is it good for women"

Nope-- not much research into men. Such a bizarre society we live in. So different than my Mother's era (born 1931) or my Grandmother's era ( born 1907)... or maybe its like John Gordon said in 1982-- women now have the right to speak out and make fools of themselves-- Congratulations, Ladies. But itsxz much worse now than in 1982, when Gordon said that feminism had been , for the last 25 years ( in 1982!), the single greatest source of fashinably malignant drivel "-- now most women act to , or allow, deliberate harm to be visited on men and boys. Incredible.

So no research on men. Women don't care-- just ask them-- but more importantly watch what they do-- as they buy a sttanp earmarked for Breast Cancer research , while 40,000 more case of prostate cancer occur a year...

Next time-- the female fundamental causal attribtion error, and why womken never commit crimes intentionally and if the seem to, they just need counselling. An answer to the bizarre female dismissal of all crimes by women against men, codified in the great quote from a woman " That he is a bad man ixz proved by the fact that she killed him, " and other gems of irrationality and immorality so easily mined from the female mind. Just ask them. Just read it... see.. report-- "Woman pours boiling water on sleeping man "-- yields these 4 female response-1) she should have left instead of "poaching him "-- the female view that whatever women do is justified without any factual basis whatwver...2) she has mental illness, or "ssnapped 3) she was sleep-walking ( true! ) 4 ) she was really pissed !... A!ctual responses from 4 females

I w I wish the delete button worked-- I really am not illiterate... Caveat-- not ALL women-- just 80-90 %,,, its not stereotyping when its accurateu

Soory-- had to hijack this -- The husnbZAnd muderer Winkler is going on Oprah !!!
I predicted this long ago. It is a female rite ! The women will ask to dip their garments in the bloody shotgun, as they enjoy the ritual of killing sleeping men,
Can our society be more misandric ? A murderer-- oops-- women cannot murder men-- going on the ultimate gynocentric show-- OPRAH-- !!
Cannot wait to hear the female response-- "You are such AZ victim" "We love you, Mary " " Your life must have been hell " " What a trauma your husnbanmd caused you by allowing himself to be killed by you " " I hope you get your kids and build a new life with the benefit of ... counselling"
Doubters of the virtual universal female irrationality and immorality-- tune in ! You will not believe what women are like-- they will openly express such contempt for the life of a man/men.. they will embrace her like Mary
Record this... Doubters and unbelievers... The soulfest, the women's sacrament-- killing sleeping men !! "You are so brave"...
The Oprah suck up-- that lady worships the vagina.
Its hard to believe this sociopath-- and she is-- is welcomed on the #1 women's show to tell us of her suffering and how she wants to get her kids back ( using the media to corrupt the judical process) ! Only a "woman's show would offer a forum for such a sociopathic killer. But to women-- she 's a victim, a hero, empowering women, an example of how evil men are .

Yes-- now the tour to worshipping women across the nation. Our hero. Shooting your sleeping husband in the back with a shotgun-- claiming abuse-- with no evidence whatever and contradicted by yout own daughter-- and styill , 9 of the 10 women on the jury wanted to let her go free, as the male foreman opinied-- It was n't a fair trial. Of course not-- the female jurors did not need to hear any evidxenc. they had already decided to let her off on political grounds .

Still think that most women are not irrational, immoral and misandric. Tune in-- just watch what women say and do.
Sorta like a man who has sex with a 13 year old-- goes to prison... a woman who does... appears all dooleed up for an hour on the Today Shoew ! She's such a victim !
God-- how did all this happen ? Women got control. The old patrirchs were right about women. The older you get you understand the 1800s and before-- it was all for a very, very good reasom. Women, left uncontrolled, wil advocate-- and -- commit unbelievable wrongs. Just watch them.

So much for the rant.. i
Too delicious-- Mary Winkler on Oprah-- the tearfest will begin as women prove why for time immemorial they were seen as inferior-- watych them prove it in front of your very eyes. Sexism ? Only when its not defensible. Stereotyoes "all"-- watch them.
Lastly the dry cleaners where mary worked ( !!!!!-- have you ever heard of a man prosecuted for murderi8ng his wife working at McDonalds instead of sitting in jail-- the women would scream)d-- the owner said she "received overwhelming support"-- flowers, gifts, money-- for A WOMAN WHO SHOT HER SLEEPING HUSBAND IN THE BACK WITH az SHOTGUM !
Any body who does not think there is a serious problem with the vast majority of women-- irrational, immoral, misandric and narcissstic/entitled--- tune into OPRAh as the LOVEFEST begins-- Killing MEN-- Its such fun ! How will you recover from the trauma he caused you !i

WHy do men tolerate their const6ant degradation, debasement and dehumanization by women ? Bobbitt was a moral holocaust-- as we watched women behave like animals.. why did we not act. 20 yewars in prison and the jokes and female enjoyment of mutiliating our genitals ( just aske a woman-- they enjoy it, just ask ) would have stopped... yet acqittal was necesary in such a political trial...
and Mary Winkler-- the most obvious sociopathic murderer-- will go on , clutching a cross, tearfully, dabbing at her eyes, head downcast-- and all the women will sigh-- and FORGET THAT A MAN WAS KILLED-- BECASUE WOMEN DO NOT VALUE MEN'S LIVES-- JUST ASKE THEM

Now-- where is my Haldol and Lithium. The doc told me to down a few tabs when i get this way

And "delete" is out and I look illiterate

I had something rather on topic to post but read etahasgard1986's Remembrance of Things Past on the way down and now I feel so oppressed I'll be dammed if I'll post on a woman's blog. The gyno-tyranny ends here!
Wait, I remember what it was. When I was in basic training an 18 year kid fell in front of my flight we all had to jump over him. By the time we got around the ½ mile track again, they had him to the side and were defibrillating him. By the time we got around the third time, they were carting him off while some paramedic straddled the gurney performing CPR. He died on the way to Wilford Hall Medical Center, supposedly of a congenital heart problem, whether or not it was this specific malady I’ll never know, but it sure was shocking seeing such a young kid die just like that.

i would say some women, like dr helen, and a few others do see the problems of men as being of equal weight.

but pretty much what etahas says is right. funding for breast cancer is i beleive 10 times that for male cancers

(and did people know men can get breast cancer too, its rarer but its possible).

my fiancee, is also one of these women, so there are women who do care. i have to stress that.

As you point out, there are more than a few women who care about men for their own sake and not just for how they relate to women. You just have to keep yourself open to finding them.

I have a little story for you that might make you think. Have I already told this one on this site? If not, I apologize for repetition.

I have an exboyfriend (from years ago) who used to enjoy recreational drugs. I told him that they were harmful. His response to me was much like yours, "I could get hit by a bus tomorrow, I might as well enjoy life and when it is my time it is my time."

In July this man took a bunch of pain killers and then decided to go for a swim. Apparently it is very tough to swim in the harbor when you can't feel anything. Drowned at age 42. Maybe it was "his time", but more than likely his death was caused by a bad lifestyle choice.

Helen- going back to the subject at hand - I do my working out and squash and racquetball playing at the Recreation Center on campus. Also used to work there as an undergrad. So, since about 1993, I have been in that building at least 4 or 5 times per week. I have seen or heard of at least 10 men, who have died while working out.
Most recent one was in the 2nd week of january. 4th yr Dental student( a former Army Ranger), just collapsed on a treadmill, two places down from the one I was on,and passed away. There were 2 physicians there who gave him assistance and did CPR and used the defibrillator, but, the young man had passed away. he was just 27.
It can happen, and us guys need to get checked out.

Mercurior,

I can answer part of your question.

Journalists, even journalists who cover medical and science, are typically scientifically illiterate. They make Talking Barbie look like Einstein. Trust me here. So the information is filtered through experts, agendas & politics & the signal is blunted by a wall of noise.

The number of athletes who are dying young these days is appalling. Mostly men, but there are a some women (mostly elite gymnasts & long-distance runners) who develop the same kind of blind drive as men do, the same disregard for personal well-being.

It'd be quite a thing, don't you think, if folks could cross the gender barrier on this one & make it clear that just because you're an athlete, that doesn't mean you're a piece of property, a modern gladiator. We're a sports-crazy nation. But we never stop and consider exactly what it's costing the objects of our obsession, what they pay out for our pleasure, our willingness to sacrifice them, with their complicity at times, with a thumbs up or thumbs down, like Caesar.

-Graham

(For Pamela Sue Edwards: 3/31/81 to 09/08/05. Died age 24. National class high school distance runner. Someone I loved very much who can never be replaced. Her senior HS yearbook quote read: "To give any less then your best is to sacrifice the gift.")

It isn't costing them shit.

This kind of cowardly thinking is the reason women are able to shoot men in the back and get away with it. They did it, they wanted to do it and most of them enjoy it.

People control their own goddamn lives.

Actually I came to say that men's health is terrible. My friend gets it for the work out stuff, so every now and then I look through it. Goddamn shameful! All those articles about how great women are, how to serve women, how to do as women say, what women like, what to do for women in other countries, yeah why isn't it called slaves health?

The thing I saw that had me throw the mag away in disgust was "6 arguements you are allowed to win" yes out of all the possible things a couple could fight about a man gets six wins. Well they aren't really wins if you fight over the remote control (or some equally inane nonsense) and she gets to keep it while you feel good about yourself.

Coward's Health. Weakling's Health. Craven Whore's Health. It would hardly be honest to relate it to men in any way. Shit I'm bitter.

They do it for money and/or personal fame. The equation to a gladiator is dishonest. Gladiators had no choice whatsoever as to entering the arena.

but cham, it was his choice to take drugs, to go for a swim.

should we lock up people who have a possible bad lifestyle choice, and who decides what is bad.

travelling the world where you can catch diseases, and bring them back. everything and i mean everything has an effect, detrimental or not, but it depends where we put the line.

there is a personal choice about how we live our lives, but when someone says this is banned because its not good for you. (unless it affects other people directly). if it only affects you, and you are an adult.

but back on topic, too much of anything is bad for you, the fact that there is no information out there about this subject, that people are ignorant of the possible dangers. (doesnt mean they shouldnt do it, knowledge of it will cuase you to make the right decision for you).

the people who die due to this condition, probably dont know that it does exist. thats the main problem, the lack of knowledge.

Yeszombieeyes,

I more or less agree with you on Men's Health. I did quit reading it for awhile for the very reason you described. If you read between the lines of the magazine, it is also a Democratic cheering committee, discussing men's health as it relates to social issues for liberalism. For example, in one article I was reading about low testosterone in men, the author states that there is little research on the problem due to government spending all the money on "bioterrorism" and war with the subtle message that most men will die from low testosterone. Men are using themselves as "guinea pigs" with doctors who don't know enough about how to treat low testosterone. Anyway, what I thought was funny was that even if there was money, I doubt if the government would spend it on anything much for men's health, it would probably go for women's breast research--regardless of whether or not this was the most salient medical problem or not.
