Humilating Past Posts
I saw today that someone on Google had found an old post of mine from shortly after I first started blogging called "Slumming it." In this post, I bragged about wearing the tacky and embarrassing outfit you see to your left.
Okay, what was I thinking--I mean, take a look at this outfit--I am defending wearing that?
Here is what I said:
But in my regular life, you will probably not notice me for my fashion sense because I will be the one slouching in the corner with the too large purple sweat pants, ripped t-shirt and oversized down coat from the 1980's that belonged to my husband when he was in college.
I emphasized that I just try to blend in by wearing t-shirts and sweat pants and my favorite comment from this utterly absurd post is the following:
Um, that outfit is certainly not designed to help you 'blend in.'
Indeed it is not -- what was I thinking? I have tried in the past year to upgrade my wardrobe and quit slinking around like a homeless woman who should be standing in an unemployment line--or maybe with an outfit like the one pictured here, I am insulting the taste of the homeless and unemployed!

I was once at the grocery store, late at night, wearing sweat pants and my husband's green coat--way too big for me.
I kept getting the eerie feeling that someone was watching me. So, I turned around and someone was--store security. (Plain clothes, but very obvious.) I was looking for medicine (for what I don't recall) and I guess I didn't look like someone on the up and up.
I love this post, Helen and can only say, we're all trying to upgrade our looks. I have to wrestly my gray polarfleece pants from myself to keep from wearing them night and day.
But one wonderful thing, I've found, a cute pair of earrings, especially pearls, can really vamp me up, at least in my own mind.
BTW, I just posted a picture of Paul Wolfowitz from several months ago which you've probably seen, that's a scream....it should make you feel better.
It is insulting to call a homeless person a "homeless person"
They prefer to be referred to by the more dignified term "Outdoorsmen"
In keeping with the mood of promoting the qualities that the homel... errr "Outdoorsmen" can offer the rest of society, may I present the following short film:

Yay for personal growth!
If there's a blogger out there who deserves to wear Donna Karan rather than Salvation Army, it's definitely Dr. Helen.
Oh, and some nice Ferragamo pumps...
I prefer to be called a hobo. Although outdoorsperson would do fine.
BTW, even with my new found status of homeless person I would never ever ever wear pink sweat pants.
*sez she of the purple plaid flannel pants and ratty purple sweatshirt:
The only thing that matters - is it comfy?
Well, for me, - now - that's the primary concern anyway. There once was a time when I would not set foot outside the house without making sure I looked decent. That is, hair styled and make-up done, flattering clothes and shoes. But then, I was a trim size 4 and much younger.
Now, I don't care so much if I am not at my best. I don't have a best anymore ... that was left behind 20 or so pounds ago. I don't have to try to blend in or disappear - that just happens now. In a way, it's a relief from the near-constant attention I had when I was a "hot babe"
I confess, I am a snappy dresser.
I learned early that its important to fake people out with my appearance.
it shouldnt matter what you wear, it should be about the person inside.
so what if you wore that, as lissakay says was it comfortable, if it was then sod everyone else.
if i wanted to go out in a green evening dress with high heels, then its my choice, ok i am a man, but if it was comfortable for me, then whats the problem in wearing it.
only petty minded people would judge a person on their clothes.
casual clothes usually denotes relaxation, wearing a business suit at 8 am if your not leaving the house, is rather dumb, if you just quickly want to buy something at the local shop should you spend hours deciding on an outfit, so you will look "GOOD",
Dr. Helen,
This post made me laugh today. From your pictures here on your blog you look so sharp and classy that I just assumed you "always" are that chic.
However, there is nothing like some big, comfy clothes, isn't there?
Thanks for the laugh!
I just hope you understand:
sometimes the clothes do not make the man.
They charge extra for that worn stuff now.
I was in someplace last week looking for some new sweatpants and there was a rack of jeans so beat I wouldn't have donated them to the Salvation Army. They'd have gone straight out to the curb with the rest of the trash or been used as paint rags.
There's a heck of an arbitrage opportunity here. Buy new stuff cheap, toss it into a rock crusher, then sell the result for big cash.
Oh, I don't know. If you were down at the sea shore digging for oysters, you'd fit right in wearing that outfit, with some off white knee high rubber boots and a Tilley hat.
But Dr. Helen, there's a lot to be said for comfy, soft, raggedy clothes. That's why I change into sweats, an old t-shirt & sneakers the minute I get home from work -- ahhhh! the relaxation!
Just another reason to be a single guy who is not looking to get married or have live in. I can wear what I want and not give a damn.
I work mostly in sweats at home, but I make sure to dress up when I go out because I've found that people react to me based on how I'm dressed and groomed.
And, Evil, the security guy spotted your extra too large coat -- often the favored dress of shoplifters.
This strikes a note with me. I have noticed that as I get older, I'm now in my mid 50s, I dress worse and worse all the time.
Oh sure, I can dress up for a wedding or a funeral, but we have a casual dress code here at work and I push it to the limit. I pull things out of the closet without regard to whether they go with each other.
At least I'm clean.
Does anyone else here notice this going on with themselves as they age?
Well, if you're clean you're one up on me...
I pretty much dress like I did in high school, except at work in on special occasions. By the time I'm 80, I hope to be nude most of the time.
anonymous @ 10:47, are you a man or woman? I am a man and my work is really casual also and I just wear jeans and any random T-shirt. It's comfortable and I don't think it's really a bad fashion move. Jeans seem to go with lots of things.
