Interesting thoughts, but there is another factor, which I think is a dominant one:
Anti-Israel opinion in American today is largely a product of the Left--and, in turn, Leftist ideas in our society are largely the product of academia. Hence, social groups which have strong ties to academia will tend to be more anti-Israel than those who do not.
This is also a primary factor in American Evangelical support for Israel.
It is odd that a Southern Baptists (once a Sunday school teacher) former Leftist President Carter is adored for supporting Ivory Tower academia's anti-semitism while a born-again 'Evangelical' President who supports Israel is demonized by Ivory Tower academia as a homophobic, sexist, racists, Islamophobic HaliburtonHilter.
When will people get the fact that Collectivism (totalitarian oppression controlled by Statist rule) exterminates anything that exists above their Statist rule?
There is a reason why the Left needs to control the our language and the meaning of words, religious faith and individual prosperity; this is how they conquer the unwashed masses.
I just wish our justice system and the lawyers who are supposed to represent the law would cease defending totalitarian ambitions and while we are at it, end Ivory Tower's absurd tenure policy keeping the Collectivists in control of the message of how individuals are required to think, say or feel.
The new definition of 'Anti-Semitism'is not those who hate Jews or Jewry but rather those whom the Jews hate. The word is bantered about helter-skelter without any meaning at all while also having every conceivable meaning . Israel has too much influence over this country today and that is not a matter of 'Leftest' opinion. As far as Iran is concerned, they are a sovereign nation-state---who the hell are we to tell them what to do and more importantly who is the UN to tell them what to do? And you thought I was the Leftist? Morever, I generally despise Carter but I believe that he is one liberal that has actually expressed an inconvenient truth. It seems that all too often in this country that not one citizen knows their history or the origin of Zionism. I could elaborate but I know only too well that with the comments that have already been posted--the people here are not interested in fully opening their eyes. One last thing, the situation in Palestine is not just a matter of Jews or Muslims but also a matter of Maronite Catholics who actually have a greater right to sit at any table of discussion then the present occupants. For my part, because of the indescriminate killing and destruction of Maronites and Maronite Churches and institutions, I have turned my face against the state of Israel for it is quite apparent that their attitude fits the theme of Animal Farm. "All animals are equal but some are more equal than others." Can you tell which animal is the Jew?
Unfortunately some staunch defenders of the policies of the state of Israel have been, for a long time now, resorting to the tactic of crying "antisemitism" whenever those policies are critisiced. This is a very unfortunate idea because antisemitism is not being a critic of Israel or its policies. Antisemitism is hatred directed against the Jewish people just for being Jewish. Antisemitism is always morally wrong. Criticism of the actions of the state of Israel is just that political criticism and political criticism can be morally right. By confounding both in a single entity these defenders of Israel may be helping to create a dangerous logic. If critisicing the policies of the state of Israel is "antisemitism" and the policies of the state of Israel are found at any time to be morally wrong then "antisemitism" suddendly becomes morally justifiable.
This is actually giving arguments and helping antisemites to further their agenda of hatred.
I disagree; much of what is called "criticism of Israel" is just a new type of anti-semitism--Israel is singled out and thought by a majority of European countries to be "the greatest danger to world peace" and Israel is thought to have no right to exist. Few who insist on the liquidation of Israel share the conviction that all nation states should be done away with--just Israel, so it is not implausible that anti-semitism is at the root of the constant criticism of Israel.

Not a good idea.
