Axe Chops off Toddler's Leg--Mother was just a Bystander
A 21 year old mother in Australia chopped her toddler son's leg off with an axe--her "punishment?" Looks like a stay in a church run psychiatric group home. Luckily, the police were compassionate to this young mother--after all, why console the kid who just had to have his leg reattached when his mother had to suffer through this horrible ordeal? Apparently, the mother is only being held until March of next year. So in Australia, this is what constitutes justice if you are female--wonder what would happen to a man who chops off a toddler's leg if the Aussies are already up in arms if a man sits next to an unaccompanied minor on a plane? Thanks to reader,Trevor, for pointing out the article.
Update: Well, here is the answer to my question about justice in Australia for men--here is a man who had the audacity to drag around a tree branch--he got four months in jail--thanks to commenter Dave for pointing out this absurd tidbit.

Punishment does seem to have bias. When I was younger my mother, who is a lawyer, told me one of the major qualms she had against the death penalty was that it was biased against men and violated equal protection under the law. She then told me of stories of horrible crimes committed by women around her rural, Upper Midwestern town. The female criminals would only get a slap on the wrist. The more I read and age, the more I see my mother's point.
The article says, "She did not apply for bail and magistrate John Hardy remanded her in custody until March next year." The context suggests that "remand in custody" refers to jail confinement in lieu of bail, and not a criminal prison sentence. After all, the woman has been charged with attempted murder and there hasn't yet been a trial.
This is also what "remand" means according to this British trial law guide.
So is the world nuts or what? Gene pool thinning out? Always been like this but we never noticed? What?
While I think that the penalty for the Mom cutting off a toddler's leg with an axe is pretty outrageous, my comment regards the guy 'with the tree branch.'
It doesn't actually say so in the article, so I might be out on a limb here (pun intended) but wasn't that where all the riots were going on in Australia last Sunday? You can't tell one way or the other from the article, but if that's where stuff was going down, a man carrying around a tree branch suddenly does take on a more sinister quality.
I mean, we all had a good laugh about the French not knowing how to handle civil unrest in the past weeks, do we now condemn the Australians for not putting up with rioter's nonsense?
Just another way to look at it is all.

Ummm, that article points out that the event was in relation to the ethnic violence in Sydney, so, just maybe, there was more to it than anti-male bias.
As a male Australian who only left Australia 4 years ago after some 46 years in Australia, the anti-male bias is not that blatent. Yet.

Ummm, no.
The article says:
The court was told the mother would be taken to the Thomas Embling secure hospital rather than be kept in prison while on remand.
She did not apply for bail and magistrate John Hardy remanded her in custody until March next year.
You should be more careful in interpreting another country's legal terms.
Being held in remand means being placed in custody until your trial completes. Didn't the word custody suggest anything to you?
In this case, probably because of her psychological condition, she is being held in a secure hospital until her trial. Perhaps they are concerned that she will commit suicide.
She has been charged with attempted murder, after all.
So, while I find your blog interesting, please take care not to go overboard.

Indeed. Penrith and Cronulla are suburbs in Sydney. I am not sure of their relative locations, but the article makes it clear that the 'perp' had been to Cronulla.
Still a stretch, I agree. I would like to see more info before I conclude that he had been actively involved in the violence, but there is a definite possibility.
You made a mistake, the mother is in custody awating trial, and at present is in psychiatric care. BECAUSE SHE IS OUT OF HER GOURD.
