today from Amazon--been meaning to order it for a while but finally got around to it. This device not only measures blood pressure but detects irregular heartbeats which can be a sign of atrial fibrillation which can lead to an increased risk of stroke. I have atrial fib (as well as other heart rhythm problems) and the device certainly picked up my irregular heart beat. It seems like a good gadget for those who need to closely monitor their blood pressure or heart rate.

The conventional wisdom about automated cuffs among anesthesiologists (at least the ones I trained with in Seattle and Boston from circa 1997 to 2001) was that they are quite accurate for the MAP (mean arterial pressure, which is a kind of average* of the two blood pressure numbers) but not so accurate for the actual systolic and diastolic numbers (those are the 1st and 2nd numbers that get reported as 120/80 or whatever). This skepticism was voiced towards the hospital-grade automatic cuffs used in every operating room throughout almost every case. I presume if those expensive ones attracted such skepticism, the ones you can buy at Amazon have similar (or worse) limitations.
All of that said, however, they are consistent over time, so if you are using one to monitor your blood pressure, who cares if the numbers are a bit inaccurate, since you can still track trends just fine. Just make sure you check your pressure with your arm in the same position every time and after having recovered from any activity each time.
* MAP is 2/3 systolic (the bigger number) + 1/3 diastolic (the smaller number), FWIW.

I find that the reading is slightly higher on me than at my cardiac rehab class with the home device but like Mr. Krupp pointed out above, if it is consistent over time--it gives some good information.
Unless one has neuropathy or other limitations in their ability to palpate a radial (wrist) or carotid (neck) pulse, then I do not see a need for a device to detect irregular heart beats. By palpating your own pulse you can determine if it is irregularly irregular or regularly irregular. Atrial fibrillation is the former, but someone with consistent premature atrial beats or premature ventricular beats or some type of A-V block could have the latter.
