Although women make up 58% of the child abusers (this includes all forms of abuse such as neglect), people do not want to think of women as harmful. I believe it is psychological in that, it is a scary thought to think that the one person--your mother--who is supposed to protect you and love you is actually cruel. Of course, it is a horrible myth but one that our society cannot get around, hence the lighter sentences for women who are violent and sympathy rather than outrage at the Andrea Yates of the world.
Andrea Yates was a seriously mentally ill woman, on medication, who never should have been left alone with children. She did not molest them, she killed them because of her illness. To compare her to a person who willfully sexually abuses a child and then kills them so they can't tell about it is extreme.
I am surprise that a psychologist such as yourself would make such a comparison.
Maybe you need some therapy.

Oh, I see--she only killed them-God forbid, she should have abused them. She tracked down the oldest of her children and dragged him into a bath tub to drown him while he begged for mercy. Change the scene here to Andrew Yates and you can bet there would be no women's groups crying out in defense of a man's mental illness. The feminists would have said he knew exactly what he was doing. Her gender gave her the benefit of the doubt.
Because women in general and mothers in particular are Good and In the Right, while men are not and are generally the wrongdoers.
Can't challenge that mythology, boy. People are VERY reluctant to let go of the idea that, generically and generally speaking, 1) all women are victims but also 2) all superior, especially when it comes to men. Remember the phrase that went something like, "The greatest man would only be an average women." A corollary must surely be, "The worst a woman can do or be can never be as bad as what a man can do or be."
Weird.
This is not particularly a men vs women thing, but the fact is that it is useless to be "outraged" at people like Andrea Yates, or to pick a rough male equivalent, David McGowan in California. As the McGowan example shows, these cases are often murder-suicides. If the perpetrator kills himself or herself too, what are you supposed to say after that?
The real lesson of the Andrea Yates case is that home schooling carries its own dangers. Many public schools aren't very good at all, but when was the last time that a teacher murdered a student, much less five students, in a public school? You also have to wonder, if Yates was unstable enough to kill her entire flock, whether she was ever any good at home schooling. I would imagine that home-schooling parents who are terrible at it would probably skip district testing too.
I don't watch Oprah, or consider her an expert on anything, so it really doesn't matter what she say.
But I do belive there is a differnce between someone who is certifiably mentally ill, was being treated for severe mental illness under a doctors care, and your run-of-the-mill child molestor.
And to compare the two is masking this issue. I'm sure if Andrea Yates could have done things differently she would have. Most violent sexual predators would not.

Oh really? I was just reading in People magazine today (I was bored at work) about the Ex-husband of Eric Menendez's now wife. He was molesting their child, became upset and killed himself. I am sure that he would have done things differently if he could redo the abuse--obviously, he felt so bad, he killed himself.
You're the psychologist, is being psychotic different than being a child molestor? Did Andrea Yates kill her kids because of an urge, or because of a combination of mental illness, drugs and an uncaring husband, or is she just evil?
I would think that someone trained such as yourself would be able to make the distinction.
I'm not defending what Yates did, but I don't believe she got of 'lightly' (she will be in prison for life, and they wanted to execute her).

For god sake, she had a ten year old child (leaving aside for a momement the fact it was her son) at her absolute mercy begging desperately for his life. Andrea Yates closed her mind and heart to these pitiful shreeks for mercy and drownd the boy. He died struggling for life under her hands.
How can you even ask if she was evil? What question can their be in your mind?
Now add the fact that boy was her own son and he died knowing his mother had betrayed him.
This the most horid preversion of the natural order of things that is posible.
Was she ill? I would think she must have been. I mean I can hardly consive how a person who was well could be that evil. But that doesn't mean she wasn't evil. Lots of people who are evil become mentaly ill.
In any event the fact of her illness or wellness hardly matters. If she were to become well at some point in the future sucide would be the only course open to her.
If she were truely mentaly and moraly well, the memory of her children dieing sceaming for mercy under her hands would not be one she could live with.
