About Me

If you would like some more information about me--here are my answers to frequently asked questions:

What do you actually do?

I am a disenchanted psychologist who has spent much of my time listening to liberal blather and decided to write a blog about my views on a number of topics. My actual job consists of a private practice where I do forensic and mental evaluations for courts, attorneys and other agencies.

I thought you were a psychologist--I came to your blog to get free therapy. What gives?

I do not provide free therapy or therapy of any type on this blog. I am a blogger and am writing about topics that interest me. I provide commentary on popular culture and society. If you need therapy--seek a therapist. You would not expect a surgeon to provide free surgery via the web, would you?

I thought you would be a sweet psychologist who was out the save the world from the oppression of a capitalist society. Do you have no compassion for the poverty stricken, the disabled, victims etc.?

I am the epitome of capitalism--it is the only system that holds human nature accountable for its failings. I despise socialism and victimhood. From a young age, I believed that the rights of the individual and freedom were the most important principles a nation could stand for. Compassion is not telling people what to do and giving handouts--it is teaching people to stand up and care for themselves as best they can.

Why do you allow commenters to post anonymously on your blog? I find this annoying and cowardly.

My blog is set up as a forum for my views and anyone else who wants to comment on them. As long as the comments are fairly respectable, I feel that commenters should post anyway they wish. Some people do not want their identity known and I respect that. I just use the time that they wrote in to identify them.

Aren't you the Instawife? and if so, I am a feminist and really do not think a woman should be referred to in this way.

Yes, I am the Instawife. I do not care what my husband calls me--only that he calls me something. (It started as a way to protect my privacy, until we realized that I'm easy to find on Google anyway. Now it's just a nickname.) If you have a problem with the term Instawife--go start your own blog to discuss it with other busybodies such as yourself who have nothing better to do than to decide what is right for everyone.

Hi Dr. Helen:

LOVED your post! It isn't often that someone is so directly and unashamedly meritocratic. That post was right out of one of Heinlein's novels!

Unfortunately we are in a world spiraling into a strange melange of ethnocentrism and classism...kind of a Marcuse meets apartheid business. Your voice is a welcome change.

And the most important thing: it is YOUR blog. I don't understand folks who try to get bloggers to change. Isn't the point of blogging to express yourself freely?

Your anonymous pal,

"Eric Blair"

Give 'em hell Dr. Helen.

I just love your no nonsense perspective.

In spite of your best efforts to not provide therapy, your posts are in fact a form of subtle self-reliance therapy.

Anonymously yours,

I always though the "Instawife" nickname was both a hoot and cute.

It's clear your husband holds you in high esteem, along with your instadaughter.

Not that THAT's anybody's business, either.

Happy (Insta)Thanksgiving!

“I am a disenchanted psychologist. . .”
We have something in common – I’m disenchanted with psychologists. Heh.

“I do not provide free therapy or therapy of any type on this blog.”
Crap, I was so looking forward to months of public humiliation. (I want my two dollars back).

“. . . sweet psychologist. . .”
Pass.

“Why do you allow commenters to post anonymously on your blog? I find this annoying and cowardly.”
What’s this poster’s email – I want to contact them with a great offer.

“I am a feminist and really do not think a woman should be referred to in this way.”
Doc, good call with the instaclue for the busybody.

Doc, I have a friend who, in my unprofessional opinion, is mental. He asks a hundred inappropriate questions at a time, and I like to give him serial crap for it. Last night over beers, I described him as a huge squeaky toy. I hope you get as much fun out of your annoying friends.

Thanks for the blog – I enjoy your perspective - but, a little too much information there in the FAQs!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Just wondering: What do you think of Dr. Laura Schlesinger? I enjoy her show and usually give her a "you go girl" when she puts some irresponsible, blame-shifting caller in his or her place. I'm sure you wouldn't think that what she does is therapy, but is she serving a purpose? I think most of what she says is good old fashioned common sense but she has many detractors in the psych community. I don't write off her show as entertainment the way some do because many of the callers can be helped by what she is good at giving: a good kick in the butt.

From a young age, I believed that the rights of the individual and freedom were the most important principles a nation could stand for.

Same here.

Like Jeff, I'm disenchanted with psychologists (and other mental health "professionals"). In my case this began at a young age also as my father has a Phd in child psychology.

I like you blog because your insights and those of your commentors remind me that there is at least some solid foundation for many of my feelings, opinions, beliefs, etc.

Um, I don't know how to ask this so I will just come out and ask it: You aren't really going to eat some poor lil ol' lamb for thanksgiving..are you?

To chipper,

The answer is yes, I am going to eat a poor lil ol'lamb for thanksgiving-sorry to all the vegetarians out there. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and thanks for the delightful comments.

I always thought the instawife nickname was pretty cool. How does one arrive at it being demeaning?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Blogger Greg Kuperberg said...

One way to arrive at it is to fish through thousands of e-mail messages to find somebody who minds.

I'm a feminist too (they don't have to be female, you know), and I don't see any problem with the nickname "InstaWife".

Keep up the great work, Helen!!! And , hope the Pundit cooked you a great Thanksgiving meal.
Have a question though - I share the same perspective to life as you and Glen do, so, if I wanted to enter a PhD program in Clinical Psychology, what school would you recommend? I'd prefer a school that is ot dominated by the whiny, MacKinnon/Dworkin types, and is obsessed with trying to be as politically correct as they can get away with.
Thanks in advance.

BTW, evn though I am male, I did once sign up for a class with Catherine MacKinnon!!!! And I think I havent met a crazier, and more paranoid person ever. In the first class, she announced that she "felt unsafe and violated" by the presence of the couple of male students in the class!!!

You're the instawife?! Wow! Now all the pieces fit. Huh, never would have thought it if you hadn't just told me.

I thought Instawife meant you know what your husband wants before he asks for it and are always at his elbow with the item(s). Come at his beck and call and compliment everything he does, no matter how dumb it is.

Lamb for Thanksgiving? Good idea, we see enough turkeys on television.

As for being a psycologist, I always confused that with philosopher; a psychiatrist told me I wasn't far off, he was treating me for depression, which turned out I was alergic to caffeine. Instant cure.

Anyway, I'm happy you had a nice day.

The very same fredoneverything.net. Fred does not use many complicated word to get his point across but he gets it across. In another time this would be seen as "directness". Now its "meanness."

"Disenchanted..." Oh yes, I too was doing counseling in the heyday of new-age crap....I had to quit when the urge to take my clients by the shoulders, shake them, and scream "You did WHAT????"---I knew the forbidden references to "values" were breaking out of my pores, like hot flashes, and would soon actually be spoken if I did not stop. Even worse were my judgement-free collegues. I blissfully retired.

Well, not entire bliss...just returned from a visit with my pacifist vegan step daughter. So I especially enjoyed your insights!

The reader who wanted free therapy via a blog might want to try electro-convulsive home therapy via tying wires to his head and connecting them to his car battery. I'm told 10-12 such treatments can cause the mind to take hold of reality.

Murder via meditation? Yeah well, good luck with that.
