Pajamas Media Returns
Pajamas Media gets its name back! I never cared much for the Open Source Media name and as for "Pajamas" not sounding "grown up enough"--I don't know--seems to me that when bloggers in their pajamas can get out information faster and outwit the so-called grown-up MSM, who is the real adult here?

For sure. Instead of interviewing dangerous people on assignment and having your hotel bombed, or getting kidnapped, it is really just as valuable and courageous to stay home and link to the blog of someone who lives there. Or to link to Michael Yon. That one guy pulls the weight of the entire paid press corps in South Asia. Daniel Pearl has nothing on him.

Believe it or not--there are some bloggers who have an ounce of bravery. There are many soldier bloggers talking about their experiences or bloggers who go to Iraq with video cameras and show what is going on--I met one recently. There are hurricane bloggers and all sorts of others who do live reporting. And not many journalists are risking their lives on a daily basis to do their work, much as they would like to have us believe they are.
Seriously, I agree that there are bloggers with an ounce of bravery. And it is just as good to link to them as to be one of them. After all, if you go out into the field and take real risks, you're not in your pajamas, are you? (That second part is less serious.)
I know that there a soldiers and weather forecasters who take mortal risks as part of their real jobs, and also have blogs on the side. I would be interested to know if there is any example of a blogger who was shot, bombed, or kidnapped specifically because of a blog assignment, not as part of some other job. Maybe "not that many" journalists have been in that situation, but a dozen or so are killed every year, and hundreds or thousands who accept risks directly for their "so-called grown-up" work.
And--believe it or not--there is "news" in places other than overseas.
An obvious example would be what happened during hurricane season. Some of the best--and ultimately more precise--information came via the blogging world, especially in the early days.
I come from a journalism background (daily--several editing positions), and some blog work reminds me very much of all the material we got from stringers, those unsung, under-, or non-paid sloggers who often turned over the stones that others missed or ignored.

This is true quite apart from Pajamas Media or independent bloggers or what-have-you.
Greg seems to have an axe to grind, so he's willfully missing the point by dismissing the exceptions to the rule for bloggers and promoting the xceptions to the rule for journalists (people in harms way in both cases).
Somehow, if you blog on the side, it's not as important as if you actively seek trouble while on a salary.
In any case, it's not about courage, it's about getting to the information and in many cases understanding the bias behind the reporting.
I understand that with a blog the writer will have some sort of personal bias, and I can typically adjust for that. But in AP releases the bias is denied, and there's no way to get a feel for the author or the virtually invisible editor.

Great point--the web is immediately self correcting and if you don't correct yourself-someone else will correct for you--as I have found on many occassions here. Information is so much faster and often less biased than what one finds on tv which is why I often trust some blogs more than the news etc. Not always, of course, but much of the time.
I love the idea of citizen jounalists--some people do not, of course. I was at a law seminar once where an influential speaker was touting the evils of the internet and blogs. His gripe? People might find like-minded others out there and get different ideas about life than what they were being fed in their own community. I nearly choked.
You're a brave soul to post about this. LOL I did it and apparently struck a nerve. And I'm a nobody!
I like the name Pajamas Media actually. Still, the whole thing leaves me cold. But that's just me :)
