The Barefoot Bandit

I was interviewed for the "Barefoot Bandit" show for the Biography Channel which comes on tonight at 10pm and 11:00pm Eastern time. You might remember that the Barefoot Bandit was the teen, Colton Harris-Moore, who stole airplanes, boats etc. and eluded the police for months. If you like such shows, check it out tonight (Thurs. July 7th) or Friday July 8th at 10 pm ET.

I saw it and it was fascinating. One thing I kept wondering was "why could't this kid learn to land a small plane without crashing?" It's not that hard, most people do it with less than 10 hours of flight time. Did he intentionally crash land? To survive so many crash landings on uneven terrain you'd need way more skill than that required to land conventionally.

Of course the real question is how does the Cessna Corvallis, outperform my B36TC Bonanza to such an amazing degree. The specs of each plane are almost identical, with only a few exceptions:

1) The Corvallis has 315 vs. 300 HP, but that should be more than offset by the Bonanza's retractable vs. fixed landing gear.

2) The Bonanza's Maximum Gross Weight is 200 pounds more than the Corvallis', but you hardly ever fly this type of plane at max gross anyway.

Other than that, on paper they are almost identical except the Corvallis seats 4 and the Bonanza seats 6, but that doesn't really matter because it all comes back to gross weight (3,600 vs. 3,800 pounds).

Nevertheless the Corvallis cruises 40 knots faster and has 50% more range. I’m experiencing cognitive dissonance.
