This week, we're continuing our series of presidential candidate interviews, by having a conversation with Congressman Duncan Hunter who is running as a social conservative in the 2008 election. We caught up with him in D.C. where he is preparing to go to Iraq tomorrow morning and he graciously agreed to talk with us about his campaign's "Core Principles" as well as his views on other issues. We talk about gun control, cloning, his opposition to "hate crime" laws and the war on terror among other things.

You need to interview Rep. Ron Paul.
ReplyDeleteSound was pretty decent in spite of what sounded like a cellphone connection. And of course your voice always sounds great Dr Helen.
ReplyDeleteGreat as always. And I am probably not alone in saying that you are way to good looking to be married to your husband (then again, so is my wife).

Your wife is also married to Glenn Reynolds?
insert Mitt Romney joke here
ReplyDeleteHmmm.
ReplyDeleteActually the one single most interesting question (I think) that I've got is one that I've been asking for the past 8 years without any answer:
1. Is the government assembling statistics on the number of illegal aliens in this country and the financial, social and legal impact?
2. Why are these statistics, if existing, not available anywhere?
...
Principally I find it disturbing that Americans are being asked to decide a number of issues amidst a dearth of accessible information. We don't know how many illegal aliens there are here. Approximate population breakdown by state. Cost of supporting illegals with federal and/or state social programs. Cost to educate the children of illegal aliens.
We also don't have any worthwhile statistics on what crimes are committed by illegals and their breakdown by statute and date/time period.
If Mr. Hunter could accomplish anything this would be the single most important thing regardless whether or not he succeeds as a Presidential candidate and will ultimately redound to his benefit and reputation.
Thanks.
I haven't listened to the podcast yet (I'm at work), but I did read the Core Principals page.
ReplyDeleteA lot of it I agree with, some I don't, and some I see as unrealistic. I'm honestly surprised by his opposition to gambling, but I suppose that helps define the difference between "conservative" and "libertarian". His criteria for judicial appointees, that they "believe in God", is most disturbing, though not terribly surprising.
On the whole, assuming he's a 2nd Amendment supporter (a point not addressed in the position statement) I'd vote for him, with reservations. He's certainly more tolerable than any of the other candidates being offered.
