Ten Year Anniversary of the Lillelid Murders

It's hard to believe that it's been almost ten years since the 1997 murders of the Lillelid family--the documentary, Six, that me and my fellow filmmakers produced in 2003 and 2004 tells the story of the murders and explores the background of the six teens who took the lives of an innocent family. Today, the one sole survivor, Peter Lillelid, only a toddler at the time of the tragedy, is living with his relatives in Sweden. WBIR, one of our local news stations here in Knoxville sent a reporter to Sweden to find out how Peter was doing. Here is some information and a few pictures on his life there. If you are in the Knoxville area, you can catch the complete report on Peter Lillelid's life in Sweden which will air on 10News at 6 and 11 on Tuesday, February 13. Hopefully, WBIR will put the footage of Peter online so I can link to it next week for those of you who would like to see more about this brave young boy who survived a mass shooting. It is amazing that the human spirit can endure, despite the cruelty of some of our fellow human beings.

Can you please correct your grammar for clarity here?

"Me produced it?"

I had forgotten the youngest child survived. I did not know he is confined to a wheel chair. He was 1 at the time, I believe. Hopefully, he does not remember the actual events.
I was living in Johnson City at the time. Like everyone else in the greater area, I was shocked and unable to make any sense of it.
I had seen "Six" on the cover page of your blog a while back, and looked through the info, then realizing what it was about.

Online grammar/spelling police == jerks to be ignored. It has been that way ever since I was using ArpaNet.

If you want perfection, don't read blogs. Immediate media aren't perfect and never will be.

Helen - what is the status of the killers? I assume they are in jail for life ( at least that is what I think I remember from the documentary on A&E). But, I hope there arent efforts being made by bleeding-heart defense attorneys or do-gooders to let these murdering criminals out of jail.

At this point, all of the killers have life sentences with the exception of one, Crystal Sturgill, who I believe was recently given a reduced sentence of 51 years.

I would have corrected your grammer too. I do it in English and Spanish - a leftover from my boarding school days.

When I was a Brittish schoolboy, wearing my uniform with short pants, Miss Pierce would correct it by swatting me on my knee-backs with a ruler.

If only we could return to the days of corporal punishment....

Have to disagree with your last sentence -- "...some of our fellow human beings."

Homo sapien maybe, human beings, no.

OMG, I misspelled "British". Another swat from Miss Pierce is coming my way.

"Grammer?" Another rule from Arpanet was that those who corrected grammar or spelling inevitably made a mistake themselves in short order. Still true.

I saw/heard no snippy attitude in the first comment about your grammar. Restating it as "me produced it" is a common tool used to see a mistake. Hearing a grammatical error like that is hard on the ears; please correct it to save other readers from slapping their hands over their ears. I would suggest "my fellow filmmakers and I." You seem to be making a point in not correcting it. Why? Why not just say, "Thank you," correct it, and move on?

I'm just guessing, but maybe because it's HER blog, and she doesn't have to do what the control freaks want. lol

1:40 PM, February 11, 2007
Blogger Unknown said...

Oh, I get it. You think Helen's point in not correcting herself is, "Me meant to do that."

2:50 PM, February 11, 2007
Blogger Helen said...

As is typical with many people who spend their days correcting others for their own good, you and whoever commented about the grammar are more concerned with superficial appearances than the real substance of what this post was about: an amazing 11 year old boy who survived a mass murder. But forget about him and his bravery etc. It is obviously more important for you and your fellow pedants to focus on the picky details than on the real issue at hand.

3:52 PM, February 11, 2007
Blogger Unknown said...

Noticing grammatical mistakes and thinking it would improve your message to correct it makes me a bad, bad person who doesn't care about this 11 year old boy?

5:35 PM, February 11, 2007
Blogger ronin1516 said... - it does. Looks like you aint focussing on the story of this brave little boy who was left disabled, but, are focussed on a piddly grammatical mistake.
Seems you and the rest of the Grammer Police are missing the point. This is a blog, not an essay written for an EWnglish Grammer Exam.

When I read the original "error" before I even read the lame comments, I thought, it's pretty cool just to go with the casual way that most of us would verbally express that thought, rather than editing towards standard. I like the folksy and personal way that Dr. Helen reminds us of her connection with this incident.

Then I read your lame-ass comments.

Did you imagine that a woman with her doctorate degree didn't know how to choose standard pronouns?
If you then realize that she probably does, did you imagine that you knew more than she what form her blog post should have taken?

Don't be nit-wit nit-pickers, folks.

It's just tedious of you to assume that you have important editing to contribute here.

Thanks Dr. Helen Smith for this article, Lillelid family are my "Brother" and WE wait for then in the resurrection day. Also don't pay attention if that people correct my spelling or "Ewinglish"because I'm not from this country or world, and for me that's not the important.

Anonymous 3:58 made a polite correction. I didn't see why Dr. Helen would accuse that person of being snippy...unless she really didn't see the error and was embarrassed about it. Helen is the one who turned it into a confrontation. But don't worry, I understand. There is no room for criticism of Helen on this blog because she doesn't handle it well.

I just can't help myself.

Blogger NDC said...

Why would you criticize the blog host or make a "polite correction" about grammar?

Politely disagree with a point or argument, sure, but points of grammar?

Doesn't that just seem petty?

Lately, I've notice that a lot of readers use the comments as a feature to attack blog writers personally, and I don't get it.

Read or don't read. Make points about substance or don't. But grammar corrections and insults: why bother?

9:59 PM, February 11, 2007

Interesting attack strategy, all you Correct-O-Bots.

I came here to read the latest about this poor boy and the tragic murders of his family, and I get this? Snotty grammar/spelling inquisitors whose obvious purpose is to disrupt the comments and harass the proprietor of this blog.

Is it because she's a psychologist that you're using passive-aggressive tactics, or is it because you lack the nerve to state your disagreements honestly?

Why not say, "You're a right-wing nut, and we hate you?"

Nooo. That would be too straightforward. You've adopted the death-by-a-thousand-cuts approach, making the comments as irritating as possible to drive traffic away.

Do you think it's not obvious what you're doing? I, for one, will continue to read Dr. Helen, despite the mosquito-infested comment swamps.

Theo boehm,

I think you hit the nail on the head; my guess is that if I had left-leaning views that followed the party line for women on the plantation at the Democratic party, most of the digs here would disappear like magic. Have you noticed that if you are left-leaning, you can get away with hatred, prejudice and malice, whereas if you are right-leaning, a simple grammar mistake becomes a symbol of what a horrible person one is? Another example of the Scarlet R.
