  1. My Hat's off to anyone who homeschools.

I first considered it when I dreamed of taking our two toddlers and wife on a small sailboat ... for about 5-10 years of cruising.

On a more realistic level ...

... we actually did it for 3 children for years, when we were economically and career Marooned in Central Valley, Stockton California, #1 Murder Capital of the U.S., a place where in the 1980's Edison Highschool was patrolled during school hours by cops with Guns and Dogs.

Who ... if there was an alternative to that kind of public education ... would willingly send there child into it.

BTW -- One graduated prestigious private Eastern University, and is working in a top securities firm, One is transferring to John Hopkins School of Nursing next year, 2 still in the University of California system.

  2. Dr. Helen,

I wanted to send you to a post from a blogger who sometimes hosts the Homeschool Carnival. The part I thought would particularly interest you is where the researchers found that boys' test scores dropped substantially more than girls' scores, bringing their scores even.

  6. Kathy --

Both very interesting studies. Another was not so surprising from the author of
    "Death By Suburbs" http://www.deathbysuburb.net

He qutoed a study during his Q & A of college age kids who could deal well with "Creative Problem Solving under stress" with three groups of kids, rural, inner city Urban, and Suburban, with no surprises , suburban kids fairing the poorest, reason was quite simple.

"country kids" had to go outdoors a good deal with their work play chores environment, while the inner city kids had to creatively learn to deal with "predators" at an early age. The Suburban kids were "Protected from both". Securtiy Moms strike again ?
