P.S. But don't fee like the 'Lone Ranger'....

....I see where the FCC is beginning to position itself to do the same as YOU do. Albeit on a much vaster scale.

"Young women are rarely given the opportunity to speak on their own behalf on issues that affect their lives and futures."

???? What a load of crap!! Doesn't fit any young (or older) women I know. My daughters, sisters, female friends, etc overwhelming speak whenever they wish, even if holding their tongue would have been wiser.

Do feminists who spout this baloney look at themselves in the mirror and not laugh or cry?

I can tell you the story of last week. I have a neighbor which is a large business. The business decided to hold an outdoor event which quickly got out of control. The business failed to get the necessary permits and permissions from the city and violated the city's building codes and noise restrictions.

During this event I went outside to get something from my car one of my neighbors approached me. She is a young lady in her 20s that is newly married. She was visibly upset about the event and asked me what I planned to do about it. I told her I had already contacted the building inspector and was about to call the police. She was happy to hear that. I asked her what actions she was going to take and she said, "None, I want you to take care of it. Making phone calls is not my thing."

So I have to agree somewhat with that statement that some young women would like to be perceived as sweet young ladies that don't cause trouble. My neighbor didn't see the insult in demanding that I, a single older woman, do something about the problem with the business. My neighbor wanted action but she wasn't going to compromise her reputation. I am sure she gleefully reported to her husband later that the problem was solved by telling me to do something about it.

Now, I did do something about the problem with fantastic success. The business recognized they were in the wrong and I am absolutely thrilled with the compromise solution that was the result. As far as I'm concerned Ms. Sweetness now owes me one, she's going to learn she just made a deal with the devil. ;)

Breaking news:

Women complain that men just don't listen.

Feministing, always on the cutting edge of social commentary.

Reminds me of a protest that was being highlighted on the national news with hundreds (thousands?) of protesters yelling "We are not being heard".

On the national news, on TV . . .

Yeah right, they're not being heard.

Tell that to my oldest daughter. By contrast, son #1 is the one who just sits there with a sour look on his face.

What's really happening is that young women aren't saying the things that radical feminists think they should be saying.

I must admit I do know a lot of women like the one Cham describes - who do not want to stand up for themselves, due to a self-image as a "nice girl" or a more insidious insecurity.

I have lost patience with women complaining they are not heard, they don't get paid enough, their boss was mean, etc...

My answer: learn to NEGOTIATE and learn to make a PERSUASIVE ARGUMENT.

As Marc Rudov and others point out, many women are never taught to negotiate or advocate but instead told to nag, bitch, cry or otherwise manipulate to get what they want. Men learn from an early age that much of life is zero-sum and that spoils go to those who (a) accept what is reasonably possible and (b) negotiate best.

Even when young women chose to say nothing at all, that does not mean that they are without opportunity. It simply means that they choose not to exercise that opportunity, and that is THEIR choice. They would be extremely angry if told they were compelled to speak out. They want it both ways.

Can't believe I didn't think of this earlier, this is part and parcel of the feminist conspiracy theory to see every fact as evidence of the patriarchy.

http://www.city-journal.org/2008/18_1_campus_rape.html

This article outlines how the exceedingly low numbers of rape/sexual assault complaints at American colleges are seen not as an encouraging sign of safety, but as evidence of a chilling environment where women are afraid to speak out about the pervasive rape culture.

It's bullshit. Frankly speaking, as the article shows college rape is extremely rare - and even many of the "confirmed" cases are of the "I got drunk and took my clothes off" variety which reasonable people would consider bad judgment, an unfortunate situation or a regrettable misadventure, but something other than a rape.

ps. My point was that the lack of "speech" from women on some issue that the Feministings want to clamor about is viewed by them as evidence of oppression.

Confirmation bias, I think it's called.

Unfortunately, the 2nd commenter at Amy's place said what I wanted to before I got to it - and very well!

This is a perfect example of why passive voice should be banned.

If women, young or otherwise, need to be given the opportunity in order to speak, then the whole notion of feminism is holed below the water line.
