Low-rise pants: What's the verdict?

Neo-Neocon is sick of low-rise pants. I feel the same. I have a great pair of jeans I bought recently but they are (unfortunately) low-rise which means I have to wear long shirts with them. Do men like this style? I don't hear many say they do--but maybe they're too busy looking to say much. Did you ever think that you would spend this much time looking at strange women's thongs or is this a good thing?

Gasp! Dr. Helen! I hope you aren't sporting a tramp stamp above them. The ass-antlers are the worst. If only women knew how many men are turned off when a girl suddenly arrives and proudly shows her new marks. "Yeah, that's really nice." What else can you say? "Ugh! You've just removed yourself from my dating-interest list? Permanently?” Ever find a man claiming to find a woman unattractive because she doesn't have a tattoo?

The sexiest of women are still conservatively dressed. Nice t-shirt/sweater, nice jeans/slacks, and running shoes/flats.

Has everyone forgotten the extreme sex-appeal of a sundress?

I've often looked at prostitutes plying their trade and thought, "Wow, I'll bet you could get far more business by dressing like someone normal."

Same as make-up. It seems the art of applying make-up and appearing that you aren't wearing any has been lost. Why should any man find attractiveness in a woman who is afraid of showing her real face?

Btw. Female humans are one of the few mammals that are able to hide their estrus, and thus, are able to attract males even when they are not in a fertile state. But much make-up is designed to mimic a high estrus state - ie. lipstick & rouge.

Don't even get me going on the semi-pedophilic tendency for having no pubic hair, removing a sign of sexual maturity about as important as developed breasts.

I don't need to date a tackle-box either. The tongue-piercing as well is intended for oral sex. How sexy... you're a blowjob queen, and not someone who is looking for a respectful relationship.

Foul-mouths ought to be reserved for men to use - but not in mixed company... except, there is nowhere that women aren't in our face anymore - not even the locker rooms if you are a sports reporter.

But, what do I know? Women so often tell us men what it is that we are supposed to find sexy, that I have just reverted back to "yes, dear." Odd, isn't it? Women are pretty sure they have men completely figured out, whereas men will readily admit they haven't got a clue about women. Except for me, of course. But I'm cocky and arrogant.

I think what people find sexy varies depending on the person. I wouldn't dare be so presumptuous that I would think that I knew what all men like just as it would be presumptuous to assume I knew what all women liked. I think it varies.

Yeah, the tattoo thing is interesting. People are either fascinated by them, or are repulsed by them. My point is, so many women assume that men like them - but I have seen too many times a group of men stumbling an uncomfortable compliment and then looking at eachother funny as she walks away. Most of the men who really do seem to like them, also have tattoos themselves.

I find some tattoos to be decent - male or female. I seen one Irish girl with a little four leaf clover that I kinda thought was ok. And I had a friend who had a small Maple Leaf with "Made in Canada" underneath.

I would possibly get a tattoo if I were in the military... or if I were in the Olympics, I would get a small little Olympic rings tattoo, maybe.

I would never get one just so that I could "have one."

I have read once that the "lowrise" comes from gang/prison culture in men. As in, having your pants hanging down below your underwear is a sign of submission... for, er, easy entry. But, I thought they always wore orange jump-suits in prison, so maybe that's wrong.

I have also sometimes suspected that many women are getting tattoos for the same reason that so many women advertise traits they find attractive when in personals/online dating. (Like, I have a good paying job, own my own home etc. etc. "I'm a good catch!" is not much different than a man advertising: I have smooth skin, shapely hips and b-cup breasts.) So, I have sometimes suspected that there is a segment of the female population - the ones that prefer thugs over "Nice Guys" - who get tattoos for similar reasons. They find them to attractive in the men they seek, so they think that men will also find them attractive on her, and truthfully, the thugs often do! Ask men who have tattoos how attracted so many women are to them. There are many "Nice Guys" who get tattoos because it helps them attract women.

As for the "slutty dress" thing, I think it is actually kinda rude - in perhaps the same way as if I took a hungry homeless person off the street, showed them my nice full fridge, and then told them they couldn't have any.

Prudery was not the only reason people used to dress more conservatively. It was as much a sign of respect to other people as for oneself. Boobs and thighs at work make me especially irritable. Especially since, if we are “equal” in the work place, it should be noted that a “suit” is meant as a sign of conformity for men, whereas women are dressing to flaunt individuality, and often sexual attractiveness. It’s work, not a night club!

Depends on the woman. Low rise jeans produce an excess of muffin tops. I just like them to fit well no matter what style.

I would be somewhat less likely to date a woman who wore low rise jeans. It signals to me a woman thinks she's hot and that means she thinks too much of herself.

But tramp stamps and the tongue things turns me off. I run from those type of women I think it just makes them look like sluts. But I do like small tatoo's on or near the shoulder blade or near the ankle and the key word is small. Not like some women I've seen that look like they have shirts on but when you get closer you see there really tatoo's going up and down there arms. Gross!

Helen,

As a man who is actively looking for a wife, I have to say what is sexy on one woman does not work on another. Her shape, height, and other factors contribute to what I find attractive (add in my mood, which lends to being familiar with a woman over a good period of time before I really can be certain about her, on several fronts).

However, like Rob, I think, simple, clean, and honest appearances will almost always win the day. Once married and sexually active, perhaps a little dress up (or down) for variety would be fine too. But in public, if I feel embarrassed for the woman, it then isn't sexy. Skirts a few inches (or less) below the y, tattoos, 'big' make-up, and yes low-rise pants being worn, and I feel a little bad for the girl or woman. It looks like she thinks she has to perform to be loved and the type of 'love' she will get that way, most likely, really isn't what I believe she is really seeking. I am not sure if she is confused or ignorant.

Now, before I understand what I was looking for, regarding good love, and thought easy sex was what that meant, then yes, that is exactly the kind of outfit I was looking for in a woman. Married women who dressed like that were seen as extremely easy and, from what I experienced, they were. Single women do dress a little more jazzy, but are a little more picky, again, from my experience. (I mean, unwed women are usually actively trying to get as many men to pay attention as they can, but are looking for a single guy out of the lot, but a married woman flashing and zinging is desperate or something... like a splashing fish to sharks or something.)

So, I guess, dress, in private, to create interest from your man. But in public, think about what you are saying and asking from men around you. Then, don't worry about it. I guess, anymore, regardless of most women's religion. It's all secular these days, maybe it always has been? Of course, I am hoping to find a good next door plane Jane woman, but that is me and now.

I don't like low-rise jeans. Somehow, it has to do with the overall geometry; I also don't like the bikinis that I've seen over the past two or three years where the bottoms don't come up very high at all. And I don't want to see a woman's panties unless she's removing her clothes preparatory to getting in bed with me.

I also have tatoos, two. One of my right shoulder arm, plate 10 from America A Prophecy by William Blake. It's the spirit of rebellion rising out of the flames of hell.

The other on my left pectoral. It's a soaring eagle clutching a rose.

My daughter did find some decent mid-risers at Old Navy. The local store has four styles (hold your nose): Diva, Sweetheart, Flirt, Goddess. It was Sweetheart that she ended up with.

oh god- I had a lot of respect for you.. until that statement. That just took all the attraction away I had for you.

Women are attracted to tatoos the same way they are attracted to anything that is effortless and has zero imagination. Anyone can with 50.00 and poor judgement can get a tatoo.

What takes effort is character, humor, wit, charm, ethics, and accountability. Men find all of these traits very attractive in women, but as in all other areas of life, women want an effortless, consequence free lifestyle, thus all the sour women with no corresponding intelligence to the world they live in we see today with the personality traits of cardboard living utterly empty, fruitless, soul dead lives.

And ladies, you can cut the crap with the fake front of how your lives are so 'fulfulling' and that you're just so 'happy.' That may work on other women, but we as men can spot that snowjob a mile away. And a tatoo only gives an early warning before you open your mouth.

I suppose tatoos are significant after all.. they symbolize an empty, meaningless life going nowhere because of bad genetics. It's like letting the world know up front, "Hey, I make a lot of bad choices."

My understanding is that it mimics the "I've been arrested and had my belt taken away so my pants are falling down" look. As being arrested is considered a positive or badge of honor in the hood, copying the look caught on.

Although I believe it's progressed well beyond that for boys (I hesitate to call someone walking around the streets with their pants around their knees and several pairs of shorts and/or underwear bagging everywhere a man), and they actually now NEED a belt to keep their pants secured at the thighs or just above the knees.

I interpret women's low rise pants like a lot of other things that women wear (including tattoos) , a broadcasted visual cue indicating that she is TRYING to look attractive, meaning sexually attractive. The effect falls flat when the woman's "socially pleasing body shape" isn't very socially pleasing.

There seem to be a lot of late-teen and early-20s women who try to look "attractive" at work. Unfortunately most of the time, (1) attractive attributes for their job have nothing to do with looking hot and (2) because of workplace demographics, most of the guys that they are "attracting" are too old to be of interest and/or married.

If by "low rise" you mean hip huggers, I am for it. If you mean pajamas, not so much for it.

It greatly depends on if you have the body to carry it. The muffin top is very unattractive (though I hear it was quite the fashion in 1540).

The auschwitz look is also not attractive. So there is a middle ground between extra pounds and emaciation where the low rise is good, then go for it. Otherwise, go for the pants with extra room.

Sgt Ted, here's a news flash for you: A woman with tatoos is an advertisement she is public property.

And let's put that in some terms you can understand: The reason men have never wanted a woman to be a skank and whore is the extremely 'prudish' idea (as you put it) of not wanting their child coming out of a birth canal that has been ram rodded by all the town cocks. Starting to get the picture, Mr. Oh-So-'Evolved?'

A woman can be a whore all she wants- that's her business. She just won't be part of my world. Any man who would date whores has very low self esteem and that's something you obviously need to work on.

Low rise jeans are hot, if you're built for them.

They are hot specifically because they allow you to see the inner sloping hipbones on a slender woman, and sometimes a little pube stubble which tells you this woman is hip enough to shave around her fun tunnel.

Low rise pants make a woman's figure look boxy. It's even worse when the low rise pants have a wide leg or flare at the hem. Unfortunately low rise and mid rise pants are the only types available. And we women spend most of our time yanking them up after sitting down since the waistband is loose and below our natural waist lines.

And it's really foul seeing a "plumber's crack" everytime someone in low rise pants bends over. Remember when people were mortified to expose themselves like that?

"Fun tunnel"? Seriously?

I think these jeans look good on very thin women. They don't look good on anybody else. I have seen people wearing them that REALLY should not have been (but Seattle is particularly bad for that sort of thing.)

I recall reading that Okinawan women wore tattoos to avoid "assimilation" by Japanese occupiers. It is amazingly easy to sort posts by the sex of the posters on this topic. The men all seem to think women adorn themselves to attract sexual attention. In my experience this is a pretty minor piece of the puzzle. Status among women plays at least a big a role.

The discussions they tend to inspire ('fun tunnel'?) are NOT so hot. Grotesque, actually. If I were a woman I'd avoid them, just to head off the possibility of such remarks.

Also annoyed by low-rise jeans. I'm thin and wear long shirts, but the mere act of sitting on a bar stool is akin to putting on a free peep show for everyone behind you. No thanks!

When I was in high school - '72-'76 - we called 'em hip-huggers. Of course, they had bell-bottom legs.

They were a kind of test for me. If a chick looked good in them, well, she passed the test. Then as now, I think they are a mistake for most women, though... unfortunately.

Add me to the list of guys that finds low rider jeans and tatoos ugly.

In a fit of "I'm eighteen; I'm independent" my oldest daughter got a tatoo on her neck. It's mostly hidden by her hair and done with light pastels so at first you don't notice it. Recently, however, she told me she wishes she hadn't done it. I naturally said "I told you so."

And for the record; I find Angelina Jolie very ugly and completely fail to understand how anyone can look at her face and think otherwise.

Charlize Theron on the other hand...

Small tattoos were attractive on women at one time, but now they are passé. Next, they will start carving themselves up like rodeo saddles and cowboy boots. A person who will make a long-term decision for such a frivolous fashion reason is not a good lifetime partner.

Whoa, Mark Hays...take it down a notch.
The discussion was on low rise jeans, a fashion trend that has been ressurected from the 1970's.

Fashion designers aren't that clever so they regularly re-introduce trends from the past thinking that it makes them look innovative. The fashion press goes along with it because it's all about coming up with new products....or old products for a younger generation to buy.

Trends typically last 3-4 years and low rise jeans are waning. Intelligent women wear what is flattering to their body shapes, not the latest trend. Women without a developed sense of style or taste tend to wear whatever trend hits the boutiques...whether it flatters them or not...ergo the muffintop.
This isn't rocket science.

Personally, I'm trying to bring back a fashion trend from the past, hats....the natural sunscreen!

For what it's worth, all you guys writing about tattoos being code that women are "public property" sound like you're well past the dating age. I used to get the same rants...from my dad...twenty years ago.

And my point was that trends aren't exact copies...just evocations of an earlier styles.

Everything today, especially fashion is taken to the extreme. But outrageous syles have lost their shock value.
Low cut jeans, sky high skirts, bare midriffs....yawn.

(1) I have two daughters, ages 7 and 9. It's been nearly impossible for me to find them modest pants. Even Lands' End jeans for girls are ridiculously low. I am so tired of seeing their little bottoms. They are just little girls.

(2) I was standing in a checkout with a teenaged girl in front of me who was wearing tight, low-cut jeans. Then the unthinkable happened -- she dropped something on the floor. (There was a line of embarrassed family men behind her). She tried to unobtrusively look behind her, grimaced, and grabbed her pants to hold them up as best she could and then sort of crouched down in an odd way to retrieve the item. It took a lot of effort. I just thought -- what a way to live.

I'm pretty sure that women cram themselves into low-rise jeans and desecrate (oops, sorry, I meant "Decorate") themselves with tattoos is not so much for the benefit of men, but for other women. Women are constantly judging each other and comparing themselves to each other. Even hair and make-up are not primarily for men, but to raise their estimation of themselves compared to other women (Most men wouldn't mind, or even notice, if women started wearing less make-up or higher-waisted jeans).

(BTW, tattoos mean "I don't think I'm good enough, unique enough, or special enough the way I already am, to the point where I need to make permanent changes to myself.")

Moderately low rise jeans are more comfortable to wear - IF they fit. I wear them with longer tops or a jacket to cover showing anything that's publicly inappropriate, though. I've been told I dress modestly, though.

And Hays - you are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but you don't have to be a jerk about it. I have a small religious tattoo that only my husband has ever seen - hidden from public view (it's on my back, so it's not like I was exposing anything inappropriate while getting it, either). I got it to remind myself of something I'd been though and survived - and now I'm considered a whore?

Thanks. Good to know. I'll be sure to tell my husband. I'm sure he'd like to know exactly how you know that.

Rise: the distance between the crotch and the waist of a pair of trousers.

The boys wearing jeans really low are wearing jeans with a normal rise - just super baggy and held up with a belt as a previous poster stated.

As far as the rise of my jeans - I wear what I want and what I think looks good on me and makes sense for the "occasion". I'm not about to take fashion advice from people that insist on wearing black socks with sandles and shorts (as quite a few older men do). Ick.

And for tattoos, don't care for them, however I don't assign the word "whore" to every girl who has one. Seriously, it is possible to be a little more discerning.

Great comments.... lots of opinions. Opinons are like armpits, everybody has a couple, and the both stink.

Here are mine:
-Tackle boxes are for holding your fishing gear, not your body hardware. The exception would be small diamond nose studs.

-Orange shag carpet and avacado colored refridgerators went out of style after only a few years; make sure your tats don't ever go out of style, or else locate them so it won't matter.

As a plus size woman, I must say that I hate, hate, hate low rise pants.

Putting the waistline across the broadest part of the hips is all fine and dandy if you're trying to make narrow hips look wider. For the rest of us... not so much. Yet all the plus size jeans are low-rise too, just like the jeans for supermodels. This goes beyond muffin top-- think Humpty Dumpty's pants, how they're wider at the waist than at the thighs? Pants like that are physically impossible to keep up. I get the highest waisted pants I can find and I'm still tugging them.

Also, when women wear low-rise pants with a shirt that has to be tucked in, like if they're at work, it covers all their best curves and makes them look like men. Personally I prefer women to look like women; your mileage may vary.

It greatly depends on if you have the body to carry it. The muffin top is very unattractive.

And that's the core of it right there. You get a muffin top with just so much as one extra pound... which is a damn shame, because we aren't talking about "fat" here, we are talking about the wonderful bit of soft curvy goodness all women should have -- made ugly. No stick chicks for me, thanks.

As for tattoos, they are like any other form of speech. Everyone has the right to "speak", and everybody else has the right to gather the "clues" contained therein. IMO tattoos in general have have been mainstream for too long to signify much about a particular person.

I love the "tackle box" reference. That one gets filed away.

I wonder how long it will take before unmodified bodies become rare enough to be fashionable. And what to call them? All-natural? All-stock? Factory original? 100% organic?

But fashions come, and fashions go. I wonder if there are any publicly traded tattoo-removal companies? :)

I was on the elevator with a group of students at the college campus where I work. An obese young woman wearing low rise jeans and a midriff baring spaghetti strap tank top got on. As you may imagine, this look was not attractive on her. Not just a muffin top but the whole damn bakery.

After she got off the elevator and the doors closed, I said out loud, "I admire her self esteem." And everyone laughed.

I'm voting with Sam.

Low-rise as a fashion choice? No! But for me it is a fit choice. Proportionally I'm tall but all my height is in my legs. I am very short waisted. This is good in the long run I suppose for my back but it makes shopping (and pregnancy) difficult. Low-rise pants don't show anything I shouldn't and I'm thankful for them. High-rise pants can belt at my bra-line.

Sexy is highly individual, for both men and women. It's true that there are general trends, some things _most_ men or _most_ women usually find attractive, but there aren't any universals, not even under the pressure of evolutionary biology.

I love the way women's bodies look, as a general thing. Tall, short, plump, skinny, I've met sexy women with just about every combination of body traits one could imagine. And yes, I like the way most women, including some who carry some extra weight, very appealing in low-rise pants.

Everybody has their little quirks about what is and isn't appealing, one of mine, for ex, is tight cut off short jeans, 'daisy dukes', and they look great (to me) on most women, at most ages.

Why? Who knows, maybe I imprinted on Daisy Duke back in the day. I don't have any idea, but I know what I like.

Likewise what turns off is individual, tattoos (if they aren't overdone) can be either appealing or neutral to me, a pierced tongue is repulsive (to me). Why? shrug I'm not super-crazy about _any_ sort of piercing, I definitely prefer non-pierced. But that's just me.

And of course any general tendency, even in an individual, will have its exceptions.

One of the easiest ways to get visitors to your web site is to spend money. Nothing is more effortless then paying for traffic. But if you can’t afford it or don’t want to pay, there’s an equally simple but free way to get traffic: ad swaps.
