18 arrested at Notre Dame
Eighteen people were arrested at Notre Dame yesterday (via Newsalert):
Some news reports say that these groups were trespassing, but I wonder if we will see an uptick in arrests of those people who protest Obama's policies?
Eighteen people- including former Republican presidential candidate Alan Keyes- were arrested on Friday outside the school's front gates. About 40 people participated in the prayer and listened to Keyes- who led the group- speak before the smaller number walked onto campus. There, they were stopped by security officers.
Some news reports say that these groups were trespassing, but I wonder if we will see an uptick in arrests of those people who protest Obama's policies?

Alan Keyes gets bigtime respect from me, he always has. While I appreciate how we have very similar beliefs on the issues, I also repsect his considerable intellect and rhetorical skills. I bit the bullet and voted for Palin in 08, but a part of me wishes that I had written in Keyes.

Notre Dame's choosing to have a priest arrested for trespassing seems like a bad idea to me. Couldn't one of the priests who live and work at Notre Dame gone and tried to diffuse the situation?
Keyes is a blowhard using this issue to keep his name in the news - I feel like he has become the conservative version of Jessie Jackson.
As a Catholic I do really see this as in internal Catholic Church issue. It reads to me that people are being arrested at Notre Dame for protesting against the choice of Notre Dame to defy the Bishops.
It feels like an internal argument where one side is willing to use the power of the state to win. The good news is that historically even the power of the state hasn't been enough to compel the Catholic Church to change to fit the mores of the day.
They'll probably define protesting Obama as insanity and commit them for their own good.
Opposing abortion rights is the mentality (and agenda) of Hitler and the Taliban. These protesters' hatred of America and American values is sickening.
They have a right to protest and peaceful disobedience, but part of protest is paying the price. In this case, they trespassed onto private property.

What non Catholics may not realize is that these people are not protesting the president (though many people think he is the center of the world - not this time). Rather, they are protesting the decision of the university to award an honor to a politician who is directly in opposition to basic beliefs of the Church. They are protesting the university leadership, not the president.
I don't think that those who protest against abortion today suffer from 'hatred of America and American values' any more than abolitionists in the 1800s did. They have a postion on a widely debated basic moral/political issue of the day. It strikes me as VERY much in keeping with American values to respect those who disagree with you and treat them with courtesy. To compare them to Hitler and the Taliban and describe them as 'sickening' does nothing to advance reasonable discussion of the issue.
I've always liked Alan Keyes, even if he is a little bit of a sucker for attention. He needs it! And this recent stir-up just makes me like him that much more. In a world dying for lack of people willing to take on the anointed establishment regardless of consequences, Keyes and a small few others like him stand out. We need more leaders like that.
If Keyes is involved: getting arrested was his goal.
Libhom, I would appreciate it if you explained your post likening people who oppose murder to Hitler.

Hitler oppposed perfect Aryan women having abortions because it interfered with his plans to build a master race.
Kind of like Margaret Sanger's vision of abortion taking out the undesirable ethnic minorities. Here is the Guttmacher Institute's breakdown of abortion by race.

A black unborn baby is 3.8 times as likely to be aborted as a white baby is. Think Hitler would have complained about that?
And the Taliban will stone a woman for having the audacity to be raped. They will cut off the hand of a thief. And you are saying that the people who oppose the violent murder of the unborn are like the Taliban?

Remember, not only are men by far the majority of the targets of violence, men almost exclusively compose the group that interposes themselves first and most often between violence and the innocent, and suffer the consequences.
Virtually no one expects women to do anything about genuine violence from those with poor self-control. But virtually everyone does expect it of men.
I'm going to break it down for you in simple terms: you spend way too much time here trying to defend your poor behavior, and nowhere near enough on trying to cure the ignorance that causes it. Said ignorance being your lack of comprehension of the male experience of life as distinct from that of the female, which is blatant in its display and grotesque in its size.
The bottom line is, you lack comprehension of and empathy for men. If you choose to, you can change that. Try asking more sincere questions to help you understand the viewpoints of others, rather than insincere ones to score argumentative points for cheap personal thrills. Try accepting our points of view long enough to comprehend the reasoning behind them, rather than just until the first point where you disagree.

...they aren't arrest everyone who comes onto the school grounds without an official purpose.....

P.S. Keyes and the others arrested should sue the Notre Damn (misprint deliberate).....
