I think you should interview this guy: http://www.corpse.org/ Andrea Codrescu, based on an comment he made one time on NPR. He grew up under communism and he pointed out, in my mind, the fundamental flaw in the system. He said that he and his "intellectual friends" knew that whatever job they took, they would be paid the same, so they took the most menial, least demanding jobs they could find, street sweepers or whatever, and lived their real lives in cafes and saved their energy for their art. This is the true face of "John Galt", not some guy making a political statement, but people making rational decisions based on the economic reality of their circumstances.

Getting ready to till the garden, thinking about sinking a well, perhaps a few hens ... and sticking with my 12 year old car. After loosing pretty much all of my life savings over the last year, working this hard just is a loose-loose prop.

I forget who said it, but I remember one person (who once lived under Communism) that described the system as this:

They pretended to care, and we pretended to work.

Also, an interesting article I plucked out of the comments from the link to Michelle Malkin's article:

Bingo! Call it Communism.

Keep in mind, people, “Communism” is NOT about militarism and whatnot… that is just a FORM of Communism. Fabianist Gradualism, for example, attempts to achieve without violence, the same end goal as the Soviet Communists did… (Some attempt to speed up the social engineering of the dialectic with the use of violence. Eg. Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao...)

Communism is about the mind.

It uses the Hegelian Dialectic to create "The Truth is Relative" (as opposed to the Biblical, "Truth is Absolute.")

Once it manipulates away the Absolute Truth and replaces it with the Relative Truth... it mind screws people into the direction the Grand Pubas at the top wishes. (Btw, the Grand Pubas still believe in Absolute Truth - they must, in order to be able to manipulate Relative Truth).

This is why after the "collapse" of Communism in the USSR, so many people screeched to bring it back... they had been so mind-screwed for so many decades that they couldn't even contemplate how to function without it.

"The Personal is the Political."

There was a reason that Communists created phrases like that.

Anyone serious about being political about this, would do well to study Hegel and the Dialectic, because the problem we are facing is enabled by a march of Right-Left-Right-Left. (In Soviet Russia, the "Right" were periods of Perestroika & Glasnost).

The "reaction" created, is often PART of the dialectic.

The only way to stop the Dialectic is to step out of it. Stop arguing about the niggly details, about the "but what ifs." Start saying THIS is right, and THAT is wrong... PERIOD! End of discussion. That is how stop the march of Socialism/Communism in your brain. Take a stand, start declaring that some things are Black and White, Right and Wrong, and END the discussion.

Believe in the Absolute Truth. I'm not saying you have to find God - that is your own decision. But, the reason the Lefties despise Christianity so much is because the BIBLE (not the Church) is an Absolute. It is the philosophical opposite of Marxism. It is impossible for the two to exist in the same philosophical space.

Seek Absolutes, and Marxism will be destroyed.

Perhaps on reflection ... you should not be asking for volunteers, but for suggestions. The characters you are asking to volunteer wouldn't normally have that within their character. Having said that I don't know anybody ... leaving my comment a little weak. But the fundamental principle may be that no person volunteers.

For some reason YouTube players are sized too wide for Blogger blogs now, and intrude into the sidebar. I fix this by changing the width in the player code to 400 pixels wide, which will fit fine.

Planting a vegetable garden... I've been thinking about doing this, but I have very little arable land. I live in St Louis, and I'm sure that there will be folks that need the fresh produce more than I will, so I've thought about creating a "gleaning garden". If nothing else it has the marketing advantage of alliteration. Charity is how we help the poor; welfare is what politicians do to them to buy their votes.

Bob,next to the embed code on You Tube is a little blue thingy (I'm sure it has a geek name) that drops down settings and you can adjust the size that embeds in a blog. I had the same problem until I accidentally clicked on it and saw I could choose the size, whether it ran with other videos, etc. Hope this helps.

I believe the pertinent quotation about communism was,"They pretended to pay us and we pretended to work." It's a minor point. Anyway, my boyfriend was dumped by a major bank right before it went to hell in a handcart. Cashed the payout checks, transferred the IRA, etc. We also cashed out the Merrill accounts about four years ago and held onto nothing but cash and income producing real assets. He has literally gone John Galt. He's enjoying NCIS marathons, and his former employer has gone belly up(still partly at our expense) for exactly the reasons he warned them about for ten years. I'd like to add a completely gratuitous I Told You So here. Rand really was right, except we're doing it in the middle of LA.

I do not wonder at the John Galt's as much as the financial advisors who are still giving advice as if it is still 2005.

We've thought about it, but we can't figure out how to do it, sans living in a van, down by a river.

I envy (in a good way) anyone who can do it, and encourage them to do so.
