David Harsanyi: "Embrace the failure. It's patriotic."

I've frequently hoped that our leaders fail. Well, maybe not "fail" but at least are ineffective. Through most of my adult life I've been OK with the status-quo. There were lots of irritating things about how the government handled things but I was able to live with them and changing things could easily make things worse.

There have been two times in recient history where I wished for a competent, effective leader. The first time was after 9/11. There I got effective and incompetent, the worst possible combination IMO.

The other time is now. I'm not hoping for failure. I don't agree with the structure of the stimulus solution but I sure as hell hope it works.

Of course at last nights poker game I went "all in" with KJ offsuit so I'm obviously one to believe in a little luck (FWIW, they held up)

I neither agree with the structure or see how it will make one iota of difference. And I would not be happy if it "works" by taking more of my money and giving it to people who don't work either! And maybe that is the difference, people who hold that the structure of the so called stimulus and the budget put forth cannot work are more willing to want Obama to fail.

If I had cancer and my family had given me a faith healer who would do psychic surgery, I would want him to fail so I could get to a real doctor.

I should have said that I do not see how the legislation will do anything but hurt. It has obvioulsy already made a difference.

Ideologically sound, no doubt, but ideologues do not a healty nation make.

Ah, I see the disconnect. You don't get to choose "real doctor". You get the guy your family brought in. If his solution #1 doesn't work, he's going to try solution #2, etc... Continuously hoping he fails to help you seems... Counterproductive.

It is not that I HOPE he won't help me, I KNOW he won't help me and I worry that I might die waiting for an actual doctor.

I agree with you about idealogues. They do not change their mind even when the preponderance of evidence goes against them, they do not learn from history, and their beliefs are "error" proof.

I think we might disagree about which party is the more ideologically closed though! And, I am not an ideologue when I am right, then I am wise. 8)

Obama's "solutions" are NOTHING but that of leftwing ideologues throughout the last 150 years. All those ideas have died, oftimes killing millions of people along the way. Not saying that there will be any such mass deaths, but...

Why would anyone think they will work now? What evidence can they offer? Other than "Bush screwed it up." Which isn't an argument FOR these failed policies or evidence of their effectiveness.

Calling free market and freedom advocate "ideologues" is to slander great men and to deny America, which was founded on such ideas which do quite well when they are put into practice. Form Eisenhower to JFK to Reagan, the actual evidence supports their ideas of low taxation and more economic freedom bring economic growth.

There is no evidence that Obamas ideas, which are from the left, work much at all. There is plenty of evidence as to their abject failure in bringing about prosperity.

SO, whose being the "ideologue" and who is offering working solutions should be the question asked and answered.

I see what Obama and his cronies are trying to accomplish and I hope he fails. Although I'm agnostic, I practically pray he fails. The fate of the nation is far more important than him.

Besides, for the past 8 years, liberals assured us that dissent was the highest form of patriotism. I am nothing if not patriotic.

I don't know financial or economic theory any more than I know the best way to slice a silicon wafer using a laser gun, but I know people pretty well. And now that I am well into middle age, I feel qualified to bark away with my own biased and ill-informed notions as why we are all in the mess we are, and how I feel about the president's plan to rectify the situation:

Our mess has nothing to do with capitalism, socialism or communism. It is not left wing, nor right wing.

We are in the mess we are because a very, very small percentage of people very highly placed in gov't, the credit market and Wall Street were very, very GREEDY, SHORT-SIGHTED, SELF-CENTERED AND TREE-STUMP STUPID.

Pornographic exaltation of monetary wealth,
a lack of vision that makes Helen Keller look like the poster girl for Ray-Ban,
"me! me! me! me! me! me! me!" and
drooling down the front of one's shirt...these are the reasons the economy is in the toilet.

The president's proposed solution is much more of the same, just directed at a different crowd.

Call me a bigot if you like, you won't be the first and you'll be in good company, but I have yet to meet an MBA who didn't look at a 100 dollar bill like it was a Playboy centerfold, and they come in both the left and right varieties.

More of the same. Get used to it. The oldest problem in human society never changes, and you can depend on its consistency with the same confidence of the sun rising tomorrow. To paraphrase Peter O'Toole from My Favorite Year, "You can depend on human nature. It will always let you down."

The practical consequences of the President failing is that more Americans lose their jobs and more Americans die in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Root for that. Go ahead. Obama is praying that the GOP roots for that, loudly and publicly. Because then the American public's opinion of the GOP will go from "Incompetent" to "Incompetent and Vile". Then 2012 will be a landslide for him, and he could wind up with a senate where economic illiterates can't fillibuster his plans.

We do, however, from 2000-2008, have evidence about whet the Right's policies accomplish. That's why voters removed them from the Congress, the Senate, the White House, and the Governorships.
