If you examine the Constitution, roughly 70% of current FedGovCo spending is proscribed in that hallowed document. Income tax accounts for roughly 1/3 of the Federal budget. Were we simply to follow the recipe we were given, the IRS would be moot.
As far as John Galt, I have taken steps to minimize, insofar as possible without getting my photo taken in an orange jumpsuit, any contribution whatsoever to DC. They have bigger guns than us but we control the wallet...

I read Atlas for the first (and second) time last month and was absolutely shaken by it.

When I read Atlas Shrugged years ago, I was struck by Rand's imagined scenario in which it was unlawful to discriminate against anyone for any reason, including inability to do the required job.
I wondered how Rand could foresee how far down that road we would go regarding individuals.
The bailouts seem to be analogous, since they attempt to remove the market's discrimination among entities that have done the required job and those which have not.
I just finished reading Atlas Shrugged at Thanksgiving, as a result of the references to John Galt here and elsewhere that started popping up pre-election.
I'm surprised (and disappointed) that I had not read it much earlier in life.
Although there were some tedious stretches, overall I found the book a fascinating read and the more I read the more I found myself identifying with the characters (and cheering them on).
I've passed my copy to my daughter, now in her fifth year at college, hoping that she'll actually read it and ponder Rand's words. After hearing some of her newly-formed opinions that have resulted from the college experience I can only hope that she'll do so.
