Jerusalem Post: "For Americans who have chosen to live in Israel, the candidates' Israel positions are not matters of party loyalty or cheap rhetoric. They are matters of life and death. That may explain why, in spite of the onslaught of Editorials From Famous Jewish Obama Apologists, exit polls (themselves the subject of some controversy) showed that Americans in Israel (less than a quarter of whom were registered Republicans) voted for McCain over Obama by an overwhelming 76% to 24% margin."

To extrapolate from the relatively few American Jews in Israel to all American Jews is laughable. Obama will win the Jewish vote massively, and on the merits.

Reality focusses the mind or leaves standing only those who can focus on reality. Something Darwinian about that.

American Jews don't face a life and death test. They can be unserious.

That said, the small sample group of Jews I know in the midwest are all McCain supporters.

To echo fboness: An intimate relationship with reality does wonders for one's thought processes.

My East-Coast Jewish friends have been enjoying Barry-flavored Kool-aid for a while now, with no intention of quitting.

"merits" implies reasonable thought. Your attention is drawn to Evan Sayet deconstructing the lack thereof on the left, here.

Jewish friends in academia I know are out of touch with reality, and are Obama supporters. Non -academic Jews are generally pro-McCain.

1.
People of the Jewish faith constitute about 2 % of the population-- why should their interests weigh very heavily in a presidential campaign?
The answer is obvious-- "Jews" have made and make tremendous contributions to our society intellectually and have a large presence in the institutions that influence our society-- and thus they have an influence that is disproportionate to their numerical strength.

2. If Obama is more on the Palestiniam side of the conflcit , why is that an immediate and conclusive indication that he is unfit-- except to the vast majority of Jews?

BTW-- Mc cain is not a conservative and he isn't very impressive either-- if only Margaret Thatcher could run. She was a great leader, Reaganesque, but with more intellectual horsepower. What a babe !

3.
Its amazing that a man of mixed white/black heritage can be elected President in the US as of 2008. When he visited the hallowed groves of Ole Miss to debate McCain, he ventured where he could not have been admitted as a student just 45 years ago-- same in Texas, Georgia, Alabama-- etc-- indeed in 1949, Texas attempted to creat a parallel law school to avoid admitting a black to the greatest law school in the United States-- the University of Texas School of Law.Georgia basically bribed blacks to go elsewhere than Athens.Tuscaloosa wasn't an option, either.

What a great country we have.

Now , if only men could be given decent treatment ...

Because some of us non-Jewish people prefer civilization to barbarism; liberty to fascism.

Palin's inclusion killed tons of independents, quite a few of whom are part of the Jewish vote.

I'd disagree with these guys in the implication that it's the fact that these ex-pats are in Israel is the reason they're voting McCain. My guess is that Jews most likely to make Aliyah - move to Israel - are Orthodox, and Orthodox Jews are more politically conservative. If the non-Orthodox Jews in Israel were polled, I'd guess that they'd be a lot more similar to American Jews in general, even though they now live in Israel.

I think that Mere Rhetoric and Seraphic Secret have pretty good takes on Jewish voting tendencies.

Soccer Dad,

I would say you are correct, unfortunately, most American Jews don't give a rat's ass about Israel. I read in a recent poll that American Jews are mostly concerned with the economy and that only 3% were concerned about Israel.

Here's some commentary on the poll you mentioned.

Dr. Helen:

Concerning your 10:22 A.M. post, I'd say the same exists about Africa. Bush has done more for nations on that continent than any previous president. Who knew? The MSM never said anything I have found. Those with hyphenated ethnicity don't seem to care either. At least, not about anything that may have the slightest chance of making Bush look good, eh?

br549,

Absolutely. I've blogged about this, especially a recent report that Bob Geldof was praising Bush. There are countries in Africa where they name their children George Bush. But he's a racist. He's insensitive to the needs of black people.

It's truly perverse.

soccer dad/br549,

Perverse? I think it is called a "Narrow worldview". I tend to call it having your head up your ***.

Amazing, how those in the MSM are able to talk authoritatively on a subject they know nothing/little about. When did research become a 4 letter word? No wonder MSM is dying.

If you believe that Obama will sell out Israel should 1948 repeat itself, and I do, merely living in Israel is reason enough to vote for McCain.

Randian,

Living in Israel should be enough. But I suspect that American ex-pats living in Israel who are not Orthodox probably would have preferred Obama in proportions similar to American Jews.

I don't think that the polling was broken down enough to show this one way or another. It's just my suspicion.

But then Israelis voted Netanyahu out in 1999 and a year and a half later regretted that.
